Fix for "search again" not working for BioShock 2

Fix for “search again” not working

Overview

This guide shows how to fix the game if you use the scrounger tonic but are unable to “search again” because you don’t use the default keybinds. The game does not allow you to rebind the “search again” key so it must be done manually in the config file.

The problem

This guide is for when you’re using the scrounger tonic but pressing R or whatever the game suggests you to press doesn’t work.

Solution (short: for people comfortable with editing stuff)

Step 1: You can find the keybindings file at C:UsersUSENAMEAppDataRoamingBioshock2Steam the file is User.ini. Make a backup if you want.

Step 2: Find [ContainerUIActive]

Step 3: Add ReRollContainer to the key of your liking. Example: T=ReRollContainer

Step 4: Save and test in-game.

Solution (Long)

Step 1. Go to this location:

C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingBioshock2Steam

Issues:

  • If you don’t know how to open explorer, press “windows key + E”
  • Username is whatever your username is.
  • I only have windows 7 64bit so I don’t know if the location is the same on other operating systems.
  • If you went to C:UsersUSERNAME and you don’t see an appdata folder then windows is probably in dummy mode and is hiding it from you. Simply click the URL bar and type in the address manually. The URL bar is the white bar on top of that has all the folders.

Step 2. Open the file named “User.ini”

I suggest making a backup of this file.

Issues:

  • If your computer doesn’t know how to open the file, open it in notepad.

This file has all the keybindings in the game. It is divided up into categories. Each category represents a different UI. For example, the User Interface of the hacking screen. We want to have the User Interface of the container. Every corpse, chest, safe, etc., in the game is a container.

Step 3. Look for [ContainerUIActive] and “ReRollContainer”

ReRollContainer is the binding that allows you to search a container again. You’ll see that there already is a key for ReRollContainer but it seems to be an alias, probably for a game controller.

Choose any key below [CotainerUIActive] and add ReRollContainer. Pressing this key in-game will allow you to search again.

For example: I put “search again” on T.

T=ReRollContainer

Step 4. Save the file and try it in-game.

Congratulations, you fixed the problem.
