Game crashes after launch (Engine will not run) – SOLVED! [EN & PT-BR]

I decided to create this guide because it took me A LOT of time and effort to find out why this was happening to me, and I couldn’t find the answer for the problem on these forums. So I believe this could be useful for other people having the same issue.

The game crashes right after you try to run it. You see a black screen, then crashes to the desktop, sometimes with no error message at all, sometimes with the message:

Error. Failed to load ‘shadersFixedFunctionShaders.ShaderLib’.
Engine will not run.

Well, if you are trying to run the game from an external drive, that’s probably the issue. I’m not sure why, but Orcs Must Die! – and a couple of other games, like Skyrim – can only be run from your internal drive. So you can:

• move the game files to your internal drive, by copy-pasting the game folders, using the Steam local files backup function or uninstalling it from the external drive and re-installing it on the internal drive*;
  or
• use apps like Steam Mover[www.traynier.com], that not only moves the files but also creates a junction point so the game can still be run from you external drive (details on the download page)*.

*In case you don’t know exactly how to do those things, please seek further information before you do that.

*Things that I tried before doing that and that did not work:

• uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling on an external drive;
• checking local files’ integrity (they were all ok);
• disabling Steam Overlay
• updating the game with the latest patch (there was none)
• updating graphics card drivers;
• updating DirectX.

Decidi Criar este guia porque gastei MUITO tempo e trabalho para descobrir porque isso estava acontecendo comigo e não consegui achar uma resposta para o problema nesse fórum. Então acredito que isto poderia ser útil para outras pessoas que estão tendo o mesmo problema.

O jogo fecha sozinho (crash) logo depois de você tentar iniciá-lo. Você vê uma tela preta e em seguida o jogo fecha e você vai para o desktop, algumas vezes sem mostrar nenhuma mensagem de erro, algumas vezes com a seguinte mensagem de erro:

Error. Failed to load ‘shadersFixedFunctionShaders.ShaderLib’.
Engine will not run.

Se você estiver tentando rodar o jogo de um HD externo, esse provavelmente é o problema. Não sei exatamente porue, mas o Orcs Must Die! – e alguns outros jogos, como Skyrim – só podem ser rodados a partir de um HD interno. Então você pode:

• mover os arquivos do jogo para seu HD interno, copiando e colando as pastas do jogo, usando a ferramenta de backup de arquivos locais do Steam ou desinstalando-o do HD externo e reinstalando-o no HD interno*;
  ou
• usar um programa como o Steam Mover[www.baixaki.com.br], que não apenas move os arquivos mas também cria um ponto de junção para que o jogo possa continuar a ser rodado a partir do seu HD externo (detalhes na página de download)*.

*Caso você não saiba exatamente como fazer esses processos, por favor procure mais informações antes de fazer isso.

*Coisas que tentei fazer antes disso e que não funcionaram:

• desinstalar o jogo, reiniciar e reinstalá-lo no HD externo;
• verificar a integridade dos arquivos (estavam todos ok);
• desativar o Painel Steam dentro do jogo
• atualiar o jogo para o último patch (não havia nenhum);
• atualizar os drivers da placa de vídeo;
• atualizar o DirecX.
