Authors Note
Hello everyone! It’s been a while. Too long in fact. I would like to start off by saying thank you to everyone who has read my guide. It means alot to hear people have learnt things from this guide. Currently in the process of updating this guide to reflect changes. if you wish to help with that, please don’t be scared to shoot me a message. Thank you all and enjoy the updated Genji Guide.
All information in this guide is from playing Genji in game, Awesomenauts, the Awesomenauts wiki (http://awesomenauts.gamepedia.com/Awesomenauts_Wiki) and Steam Store pages.
If anybody has any information about any specifics about stat and stat increases not mentioned in this guide or is but is represented by a percent not a number, please let me know so I can update.
REMEMBER: This guide will not guarrentee a win with Genji, however it aims to increase your knowledge on Genji’s abilities and skills, provide useful tips and tricks to help your Genji gameplay and also some tutorials on various different ways to play Genji. Everything in here is not only subject to change but also how I use Genji and how I see him being played. Everything here is a suggestion (except stats), you can use and drop whatever you need.
Background
Genji is one of the last of his species: an Entin. The Entin are rapidly reproducing caterpillars with a high libido and no sense of limitation. Any planet the Entin visit, they leave ravaged in their wake. They have been labeled a pest in need of extermination for eating entire continents worth of crops and terrorizing the local populace with late night techno raves. As a result, their kind has been bugsprayed to the brink of extinction.
Trying to better their ways, the remaining Entin have created the Order of Popae Monks on the fungi moon Pulvan. Fasting heavily they devote everything to their beloved deity: The Grand Space Butterfly!
Genji sinned with snacks and dirty literature however, and after repeated solitary cocoonfinements failed to make him better his ways, he was sent out on an emergency soul-cleansing pilgrimage through the galaxy.
Joining the Awesomenauts to cut back on the traveling costs of his journey, Genji has been the scourge of many a ship’s pantry and is rumored to be the main reason some of the smaller more edible-looking ‘naut recruits have gone missing.
Genji is an Intermediate Support character voiced by Jesse Cox of the Youtube channel of the same name http://(https://www.youtube.com/user/OMFGcata) back in late Febuary of 2013.
Skins and References
Genji himself is a reference to Jesse Cox himself. On his YouTube channel he created a deity called the Space Butterfly which Genji worships. Jesse has also been called the Prophet of this made-up religion and as we know in-game, Genji is known as the Pollen Prophet. Genji currently has three skins other than his normal skin to choose from.
From the land of wind, fire, water, lightning and earth comes Kage Genji. Defending the village of the Hidden Cocoon from all forces that would oppose it, Kage Genji holds the highest religious rank an Entin disciple can attain. Are you a weary traveler looking for spiritual guidance? Then turn your clouded gaze to Kage Genji!
Kage Genji is a reference to The Five Great Shinobi of the Naruto series. Kage in Japanese is Shadow.
Genji the Grey wizard is not some conjurer of cheap tricks. He’s a trusty companion for any questing party in need of his wisdom or his crafty smoke rings!
Are you in need of some some fireballs, wisdom and balrog smiting? Look no further than Genji the Grey!
Genji the Grey is an obvious reference to Gandalf the Grey of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Franchise.
From the darkest reaches of space, the Void Moth comes to spreads its wings over all of creation. To aid him in his eternal struggle against the Space Butterfly, the Void Moth has sent out it’s most powerful prophet, Grim Genji, to go forth and gather more souls for his master.
Grim Genji is a reference to the Grim Reaper, the figure who appears to people who are about to die. The Void Moth is another deity of Jesse Cox’s creation, a force the opposes the Great Space Butterfly.

Alot of the voicelines for Genji are representative of both a prophet and their power (e.g. seeing the future) and the crazy words of a mad man. Abilities
Genji is a Intermediate Level Tacical Support character. His Attack Range is Medium. He has a base speed of 8.02 and base health of 1250 which reaches 2200 at max Team Level. Genji is a unique character in the way that you can play him many different ways. He can be the support your team needs, push the lanes and even stand his own against other awesomenauts. It all depends on how you use him.
Genji has 4 abilities that he uses in battle (all stats are based on non-upgraded abilities):
Flutter Jump:
Genji, as the chosen avatar to represent the Space-Butterfly in battle, is granted spectral wings to extend his jump for those crucial seconds that could mean the difference between life or a one-way ticket to the allmighty Bugzapper in the sky.
This is Genji’s Jump. It allows his to jump 2 times with the last jump being a maximium 1 second hover by holding or tapping the button. The height of the primary jump is 7.2 with each addition jump being 4.
Butterfly Shot:
Carrying the staff of the Popae office, Genji can shoot ethereal butterflies from its tip, sending them out in a flurry and making them return to cause another hit on their way back!
The Butterfly Shot does 65 damage on contact with an enemy and will return to Genji upon reaching it’s max range. In total, the damage is 130 damage per click. At max Team Level it does 102.05 per hit meaning it does 204.1 damage per click. It has a range of 7.4 and an attack speed of 75. Turrets are unaffected by the “Boomerang” effect of the shot, so turrets only take 65 per hit. Projectile will always return to Genji in a sraight line.
Monarch Blessing:
Offering a prayer to the great and allmighty Space-Butterfly, Genji receives such a powerful blessing that it spills from his body to every nearby ally, wrapping them in a glowing blanket of protective goodness!
Monarch Blessing grants Genji and any nearby friendly Awesomenauts within a range of 8 a sheild that reduces damage taken by 20%. It lasts 3 seconds and has a cooldown of 14 seconds.
Cocoon:
Entin silk is not only very fashionble in some parts of the galaxy, but it’s also one of the most sturdy materials around! Gurgling and spitting out a ball of the webbed silk, Genji can envelop his enemies in a cocoon, making them unable to attack or be attack for a short period of time.
Genji fires a silk ball which can bounce of walls, the ceiling and edges of platforms to trap an enemy in a cocoon for 2 seconds. If the projectil.e doesn’t hit an enemy before touching the ground, it disappears. While encased in a cocoon, enemies cannot attack, move or use abilities however they cannot be damaged. It has a range of 6 and a cooldown of 9 seconds.
Upgrades
Genji’s 4 abilities can be improved with these upgrades. These upgrades can change the tide of battle or change the play style of Genji all together depending on which ones you choose. The following sections will detail each of the upgrades and how they enhance Genji.
REMEMBER: As Genji’s Team Level increases, most if not all of his damage and health related abilities and upgrades are increased in power a bit.
Cocoon Upgrades
To unlock the Cocoon Ability, you will need to purchase it for 135 Solar.
Butterfly Nebula Dust:
The sacred glowing dust is only available to monks who have completed the trial of the deep sleep.
This upgrade causes the enemy captured in the cocoon to recieve a slow effect upon exiting the cocoon. This can be bought at 165 Solar and upgraded once. At Lv1 the enemy recieves a 20% slow debuff for 2 seconds upon exiting the cocoon. Upgrading to Lv2 increases the speed debuff to 40%.
The Last Pieridae Transformae:
This rare butterfly has been hunted to almost extinction for its transforming capabilities.
When capturing an enemy Sawblade or Humming Droids in the cocoon, it transforms them into friendly Humming Droids upon exiting the cocoon. When exiting the cocoon, it will spawn a gold Solar coin. The droid will always have 600 health, 7.2 movement speed and always deal 70 damage per shot and only 40 to turrets. All other traits allign with standard Humming Droid stats. The Humming Droid is unaffected by all other cocoon upgrades except for Jagra Eggs. Jagra Eggs however will not damage the Droid but will still provide you with the Lifesteal effects. This ability can be bought for 185 Solar and cannot be upgraded.

MIsfortune Cookie:
This batch of flawed fortune cookies contains offensive and vulgar language.
This upgrade reduces the health of a captured enemy. It can be bought for 215 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, the captured target loses 10% of their health at time of capture. This is increased to 20% at Lv2.
Prefab Cocoons:
Easy to use folding cocoon for canopy camping.
This ability adds an explosive effect to the Cocoon. It can be bought for 180 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, all enemies near the cocoon will get dealt 160 points of damage. This is increase to 320 at Lv2. At max Team Level, the explosion does 251.2 damage at Lv1 and 502.4 damage at Lv2.
Moon Nectar:
Highly addictive substance also known as “nectar of the gods”. Prohibited in many starsystems.
This upgrade makes the cocoon into a fountain of health for all friendly Awesomenauts. It can be bought at Lv1 and cannot be upgraded. The cocoon will produce 2 healthpacks that heal for 47 health each every 0.5 seconds until the cocoon is destroyed. At max Team Level each healthpack heals 73.79 health. These healthpacks act just like normal healthpacks, meaning they completely negate Damage Over Time effects. Only Genji and friendly Awesomenauts can collect these health packs.
Monarch Blessing Upgrades
To unlock the Monarch Blessing Ability, you will need to purchase it for 135 Solar.
Hidden Leaves:
“Popae 1:23 Staring into the vastness of space the great papillon realized that it was not him looking at the universe, it was the universe looking at him.”
This upgrade increases the damage absorption rate of Monarch Blessing. It can be purchased for 175 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, the damage absorbtion goes from the standard 20% to 27.5%. At Lv2, the damage absorbtion goes up to 35%.

Kremzon Calendar:
This ancient cyclus calendar has an end date of March 2013.
This upgrade reduces the cooldown time for Monarch Blessing. It costs 120 Solar to purchase and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, the cooldown for the ability is reduced from 14 seconds to 12.5 seconds. At Lv2, the cooldown is reduced to 11 seconds.
Spiritual Cooking:
Nutricious almost vegan recipes for very hungry caterpillars.
This upgrade increases the maximum health of all who are affected by the ability. It costs 195 Solar to purchase and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, it increases all allies affected by the ability health by 90. At Lv2, it is increased by 180. The increase in health doesn’t add health to the bar but rather gives you empty slots instead. The increase in maximum health doesn’t leave after Monarch Blessing is finished. In other words, this is a permanent increase in max health. Casting Monarch Blessing again will not add to your max health if already recieved the increase before and haven’t died since then. When an Awesomenaut with the max health increase dies, they convert back to their normal max health.
Butterfly Shot Upgrades
This is unlocked as soon as the game starts so you do not have to purchase it. All upgrades in this area affect Genji’s damage output, damage type(s) and attack stats.
Storm Drum:
Beat that drum like it owes you money!
This adds a storm cloud effect to Genji’s primary attack. Every 4.8 seconds Genji’s staff will glow red (if not already red) meaning that the next shot he takes will produce a size 7.2 cloud near the end of the attack range which lasts 2 seconds that damages enemies within it at an attack speed of 200. The staff will stop glowing while this upgrade is on cooldown. This upgrade cost 165 Solar and can be upgraded twice. At Lv1, the cloud deals 50 damage per hit. At Lv2, it deals 100 per hit instead. At max Team Level, a Lv1 cloud deals 78.5 damage per hit while a Lv2 cloud will deal 157 damage per hit. Turrets are unaffected by the cloud’s damage.
Plastic Praying Beads:
Universal multi-religion praying beads.
This upgrade increases Genji’s base damage. It costs 120 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, his base damage goes from 65 per hit to 71 per hit (a total of 142 due to the attack’s “Boomerang” mechanic.). At Lv2, it is increased to 77 per hit (a total of 154 due to the attack’s “Boomerang” mechanic.). This means that at max Team Level, Genji will be doing 111.47 damage per hit or 222.94 per attack at Lv1 and dealing 120.89 damage per hit or 241.78 per attack at Lv2.
Glow Bracelets:
Rave all night long!
This item increases Genji’s primary attack speed, travel speed and reduced the cooldown on the Storm Drum upgrade (if purchased). It costs 120 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, it increases Genji’s Attack Speed from 75 to 81, increases it’s Projectile Travel Speed by 10% and reduces the cooldown of Storm Drum from 4.8 seconds to ?.? seconds. At Lv2, Genji’s Attack Speed is now 87, Projectile Travel Speed is now increased by 20% and Storm Drum’s cooldown is ?.?.
Caterpillar King Statue:
Small statue of Julnas the hungry.
This upgrade gives the Butterfly Shot healing properties for allies. This upgrade doesn’t remove Genji’s damage output with his Butterfly Shot. It costs 135 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, when an ally Awesomenaut makes contact with the Butterfly Shot’s projectile will be healed for 20 health per hit (a total of 40 due to the attack’s “Boomerang” mechanic.). At Lv2, it is increased to 40 (a total of 80 due to the attack’s “Boomerang” mechanic.). At max Team Level, teammates will recieve 31.4 health per hit or 62.8 per shot at Lv1 and 62.8 health per hit or 125.6 per shot.
Space-Hippo Manure Incense:
Burns slowly not advisable to species with nostrils.
This upgrade gives Butterfly Shot a Damage Over Time effect. It costs 165 Solar and cannot be upgraded. An enemy hit will recieve 85 points of damage over 4 seconds. At max Team Level, the damage is 133.45 over 4 seconds. When attacking a turret, the damage over time is converted to raw damage meaning you deal an additional 85 damage to turrets. At max Team Level you will deal 133.45 damage in addition to your normal damage when attacking turrets.
Wool Shawl:
Keeps your throat and silk glands nice and warm.
This upgrade increases the range on Genji’s Butterfly Shot. It costs 165 Solar and cannot be upgraded. With this upgrade your Butterfly Shot’s Projectile will travel 9.8 as compared to 7.4. It should be noted that the delay between each shot is reduced to compansate for the increase in distance so you should still be as affective as you were before, just at a longer range.
Genji Utility (Flutter Jump) Upgrades
This is unlocked as soon as the game starts so you do not have to purchase it. All upgrades in this area affect Genji’s stats other than attack and other passive buffs.
Power Pills Turbo:
Insert pill into rear end of digestive tract.
This upgrade increase Genji’s total health. It costs 130 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, Genji’s max Health increases from 1250 to 1350. At Lv2, it is increased to 1450. At max Team Level Genji has a Health total of 2200, at Lv1 it is 2376 and at Lv2 it is 2552.
Med-i’-can:
Hello… anyone there? Please get me out of here!!!
This upgrade increases the rate at which Genji regenerates Health. It costs 90 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, it is increased by 90%. At Lv2, it is increased by 180%. It is worth noting that since health regeneration is always active, this upgrade decreases all damage done by certain damage over time effects.
Space Air Max:
Fashionable and Fast.
This upgrade increases Genji’s movement speed. It costs 135 Solar and cannot be upgraded. Genji’s speed is increased from 8.02 to 9.12.
Barrier Magazine:
Free personal shield with this month’s edition of The Barrier! Read all about Zork’s imperium.
This gives Genji a damage absorbing shield. It costs 90 Solar and can be upgraded once. At Lv1, it reduces all incoming damage by 5%. At Lv2, all damage is reduced by 10%.
Piggy Bank:
This product was brought to you by Zork industries, exploiting Zurians since 2780.
This is a free upgrade available to all Awesomenauts. Upon purchase you recieve 100 Solar. Can only be purchased once.
Baby Kuri Mammoth:
“LOOK!!! A FLYING ELEPHANT!”
This upgrade helps reduce the effects of certain debuffs on Genji. It costs 110 Solar and cannot be upgraded. All Crowd Control effects (except Tether and Displacement) and Amplify Damage are decreased by 30%. What they are and how are they affected by Baby Kuri Mammoth are listed below:
- Amplify Damage (reduces the damage increase debuff)
- Blind (reduces time blinded)
- Ensnare (reduces time spent immobile)
- Gravity (reduces pull rate)
- Knockback (reduces knockback distance)
- Slow (reduces time spent slowed and the effects on Speed and Jump Height)
- Slowdown (reduces the rate of which things are slowed)
- Silence (reduces time spent without being able to use abilities)
- Stasis (reduces time spent immobile and unable to attack)
- Stun (reduces time immobile and unable to attack)
Certain Abilites have some aspects that are listed above not reduced. Skølldir’s Mighty Throw will not get it’s stun duration reduced but will still have the knockback reduced. Stuns applied during a pull/displacement (e.g. Leon’s Tongue Snatch and Admiral Swiggins’ Anchor Hook) are not reduced.
Assessment of Abilities and Upgrades
Genji’s kit is ideal for a support character. His cocoon is able to temporarily take an enemy out of the fight or prevent an enemy from escaping a brawl and Monarch Blessing is perfect for giving your team the edge in battles.
Upgrade wise, Genji has alot of option. You can turn Genji’s cocoon into lane pusher by turning enemy droids into humming droids, increase the staying power of your team with the Moon Necter and yourself with the Lifesteal, use it to pick off enemies with the slowdown, exposion and damage effects. Genji’s Monarch Blessing allow to either heal, increase defences or speed up the team to do all sorts of things. Even his Butterfly Shot can be used to heal allies or deal alot of damage.
To me, your Cocoon Ability is the most important ability. Making effective use of your Cocoon can change the tide of a battle and even the game. The Solar Tree being replaced by a damage absorbing sheild is not ideal but it helps by keeping you out on the feild longer
A neat interactions to point out is the Storm Drum with the Cocoon Ability. If timed well you can trap enemies in the cocoon and force them to escape only by walking through a cloud of damage. This can be even more effective by giving your Cocoon the slowdown upgrade so they spend more time in the cloud, give Monarch Blessing the speed upgrade to catch up to your prey and increasing either the damage or the range of your Butterfly Shot to finish the enemy off.
Other neat little ideas like combining lifesteal with the transform capabilities of the Cocoon. You still gain life from the trapped droid however it will transform into a friendly droid at full health, giving essentially a free heal.
Genji Styles
Authors Note: Awesomenauts have changed drastically since this guide originally came out. I am playing the game more in the hopes to grasps all it’s new characters, maps and mechanics. Will update as I learn more. All help is appreciated.
Genji is in a weird spot currently in the game. Due to the vast amount of characters added since his introduction, It appears that our poor Pollen Prophet friend is been used less. However, he has been considered A tier and above to many people proving that he can be good in the right hands. But never fear fellow butterfly, for I am here to hopefully bring our little buddy out of his cocoon and into use.
From testing, Genji’s playstyle has shifted abit due to the loss of the Solar Tree and all the new characters. Currently, I see 3 ways of play our caterpillar friend:
- POLLEN PROPHET POWER: A more offensive based style used to both take enemy Awesomenauts out of a fight but also to make sure Genji and friendly Awesomenauts have the edge in combat.
- CULT OF THE SPACE BUTTERFLY: An area control based playstyle that improves the sustainability of Genji, his fellow Awesomenauts and even friendly Droids.
- THE HYBRID: This playstyle is a more balanced mix of Power and Control.
Pollen Prophet Power Playstyle
“Power! Unlimited Power!” This set will help you overwelm your opponent with pure pollen power.
Ability Priorities:
You want to grab the cocoon plus 1 of it’s upgrades as soon as possible. If you begin to struggle, pick up Monarch Blessing.
Upgrade Priorities:
Genji is you name and damage is your game. To increase the maximum damage possible, you will need your abilities to follow suit in achieving the Great Butterfly’s wishes.
For the Cocoon, you would want the Prefab Cocoon, followed closely by Butterfly Nebula Dust and Misfortune Cookies.
Monarch Blessing would ask for Gettin’ Out of Da Hood for chasing your enemies, followed by Spiritual Cooking and Kremzon Calender to help you stay in the fight.
Your Butterfly shot is simple. You would want Storm Drum first in order to deal damage in an area, especially a cocoon located area. followed by both Plastic Praying Beads and Glow Braclets. However if you feel you are doing enough damage per shot and don’t need Glow Braclets or fell your DPS is fine without Plastic Praying Beads, then swap either for Space-Hippo Manure Incense to almost guarentee a kill off a fleeing enemy.
For your base upgrades, you will want Space Air Max, Baby Kuri Mammoth and Med-i’-can. However if you are using the Piggy Bank, you can drop the Med-i’-can.
Your Goal:
Push lanes and pick off enemy Awesomenauts that have low health or are by themselves. If you want to make an impact right from the get go, by the Cocoon, followed by Piggy Bank and then Prefab Cocoon. To pick-off enemies, the simpliest way is by first Cocooning your target, causing the explosion to either deal damage to bots or hopefully repel other enemies. If possible, try and get the rest of your team to distract them while you pick off your target. If you need to though, while the other team are close together, be careful but execute this plan. Just as they are about to leave the Cocoon, fire your Butterfly Shot at the Cocoon causing the damage cloud to appear. It is now that you want to get in front of your foe if possible to prevent their escape while dealing damage. When you need to, pop your Monarch Blessing to chase down your prey. Use any route nessessary to prevent them from reaching their base if possible.
Tips:
You want to be out on the field dealing damage as much as possible but don’t overextend and don’t fight 2 or more Awesomenauts on your own. You are still very fragile, be patent. Stick with a teammate if possible, your current form isn’t designed for soloing lanes and more than one Awesomenaut at a time. Scaring enemies off with the Stormcloud and the Cocoon are always good option. You want to gain health from it’s natural resources in the Jungle or floating around to stay in battle longer. Be unpredictable when jumping, you have more mobility then other Awesomenauts in the air. Return to base after recieving 200 Solar if possible, however if the opportunity presents itself, stay out there to earn more money then if things start to die or things die down, teleport back to base. You don’t have a set purchase order or are restricted to the details given above. Follow them as best you can but they are called priorities for a reason. If you need to adjust your stratergy or need a different item to keep up, do that and adjust accordingly.

COMING SOON!
Cult of the Space Butterfly Playstyle
“You shall not pass!” This set will help you and your teammates follow the will of the Great Butterfly herself. This set aims to keep you and your fellow followers alive.
Ability Priorities:
You want to grab the cocoon plus 1 of it’s upgrades as soon as possible. If you begin to struggle, pick up Monarch Blessing.
Upgrade Priorities:
The Space Butterfly calls to you and tells you to improve the lives of your fellow Awesomenauts. To increase the maximum sustainability of your team, you will need your abilities to follow suit in achieving the Great Butterfly’s wishes.
For the Cocoon, you would want the Pieridae Transformae, followed closely by Moon Nectar then Jagra Eggs. This keep your team on the lane for longer.
Monarch Blessing would ask you to protect your allys. So use Kremzon Calender, Bronco Yeast and Hidden Leaves as and when needed.
Your Butterfly Shot will require some tuning based on the situation. Usually the best way to go it Caterpillar King Statue followed by Glow Bracelets then either Wool Shawl or Storm Drum.
For your base upgrades, you will want Med-i’-can and Barrier Magazine pretty much definately. The final upgrade is up to the situation and what you feel is need but most of the time it will be Piggy Bank
Your Goal:
Keep you and/or your team in the lanes as long as possible. If you want to make an impact straight from the get go, buy the Cocoon, followed by Piggy Bank then Pieridae Transformae. Help the push my transforming enemy drones into ally ones, keep your teammates alive with the new healing capabilities of your Butterfly Shot and protect yourself and others when ever you can with Monarch Blessing. You will be able to take punishment from 2 enemy Awesomenauts but I don’t recommend staying long. In a 1v1 scenario, cocoon the enemy, take some health if needed then get out of dodge.
Tips:
Sticking with at least 1 teammate is highly recommended so that you get the most out of this loadout however solo pushing a lane is also an option if it comes to it. Scaring enemies off with the Stormcloud and the Cocoon are always good option. You want to stay healthy as much as you can. All cocoon upgrades will help with that.

The Hybrid Playstyle
“From the cocoon, I awaken!” This set is a mixture of the two other sets mentioned before. A balance of both power and control. This set is usually gone into if one of the above sets isn’t working out during a game but can also be your primary plan of attack.
Ability Priorities:
You want to grab the cocoon plus 1 of it’s upgrades as soon as possible. If you begin to struggle, pick up Monarch Blessing.
Upgrade Priorities:
Making an impact is what matters here. To increase the maximum overall coverage you can get, you will need your abilities to follow suit in achieving the Great Butterfly’s wishes.
For the Cocoon, you would want the Pieridae Transformae, followed closely by Moon Nectar and Misfortune Cookies/Butterfly Nebula Dust.
Monarch Blessing is very flexable in this set. Any combination can be used. My recommended set though is Kremzon Calender, Gettin’ Out of Da Hood and Hidden Leaves/Bronco Yeast.
Your Butterfly shot is also flexible. I recommend getting Storm Drum, Glow Bracelets and Caterpillar King Statue/Space-Hippo Manure Incense.
For your base upgrades, you will want Med-i’-can and Barrier Magazine. Most likely the third will be the Piggy Bank but if it isn’t, pick Space Air Max.
Your Goal:
Stay active in the fight. To make an impact right from the get go, purchase Cocoon followed by Piggy Bank then Pieridae Transformae. Transforming enemy bots is great for reducing the amount of pushing you opponent can do, since you will have 3 bots to their 1. Monarch Blessing will help you get out of dodge when needed but also help you in your fight with the enemy. With the flexability of your kit, you can be pretty much anyway but always remember to cater your playstyle and positioning to your kit and do not over extend.
Tips:
You want to be out on the field dealing damage as much as possible but don’t overextend and don’t fight 2 or more Awesomenauts on your own. You are fragile, be patent. Stick with a teammate if possible, teamwork makes the dream work. Scaring enemies off with the Stormcloud and the Cocoon are always good option. You want to gain health from it’s natural resources in the Jungle or floating around to stay in battle longer or via your abilities for a quick dose.

Hints,Tips and Tricks
These Hints, Tips and Tricks are for how to play Genji on top of the Loadout explanations above.
Here are some Hints, Tips and Tricks to use while playing as Genji:
- Use the hints on “playing against genji” below to learn what to avoid.
- Your butterfly shot can pierce enemies and allies (hit multiple at once) so if you have the Caterpillar King Statue on you can heal and deal damage at the same time if aimed correctly.
- Bouncing Dynamite from Sherriff Lonestar can bounce as high as you can fly so watch out.
- Be careful when fighting on the ground because if Butterfly shot hits floor it will instantly return to your wand or fly backwardswasting your attack so try keep your cursor off the ground.
- Use your unique jumping to your advantage.
- Your Flutter Jump can keep you in the air long enough to use the central jump pad (on Sorona) to go one way then fly over to the other jump pad and get flung another way. (A few other characters can do this, but it’s easiest with Genji).
- If you have Prefab Cocoon Equipped you can use the destructive ability to take down turrets by capturing droids or Awesomenauts that just exit via the turret in question.
- If you have Prefab Cocoon Equipped you can use it to capture a Leon clone and to explode the invisible Leon. This works with Sherrif Lonestar’s Bull as well.
- Also note that both Leon’s clone and Lonestar’s Bull can be cocooned and heal you while having Moon Nectar applies if you are low. Just remember to get out of the way of the bull.
- Using your Cocoon on a Clunk that is about to explode will stop him from exploding. This also can work on any other charged attack like Ralynn’s Snipe.
- Monarch Blessing can be used as a great escape mechanism for you and your whole team. Using the “Gettin Out of Da Hood” (25% movement buff) and “The Cat Pillar” (heal for 125 min) or “Spiritual Cooking” (90 extra health min.) you can run faster than the other team and gain some health so you don’t die as soon as it is activated.
- A good teammate to have with Genji is Froggy G. Standing on top of the cocoon and then using his spin attack just before the Cocoon gets destroyed you can deal a good chunk of damage to the cocooned victim. Releasing a storm cloud can do the same as well.
- Derpl Zork apprieciates Genji’s help as well. If you have the Caterpillar King Statue active, you can stand behind a Turret Mode Derpl to heal him and deal damage to enemies in front.
- Genji with maxed out attack speed, damage and storm drum can kill almost any character in seconds (Contribution by 14.99 Sauxez)
- Cocoon with Jagra Eggs is a great escape mechanism. Not only does it stop the enemy chasing you but also heals you as well. (Contribution by 14.99 Sauxez)
- Tapping jump will keep you in the air longer then holding jump.
- Genji stops moving when he activates Monarchs Blessing and Cocoon. This could pose issue in certain situations.
- Casting Monarch Blessing in the air is safer than casting on ground.
- Cocoon projectile will bounce of walls until it hits a player, the ground or disapears.
- Cocoons can be reflected
- Voltars drones activated as soon as he is cocooned, so be careful
- Space-Hippo Manure Incense applies straight damage to turrets and the Solar Drill instead of damage over time.
- Even though Genji is slow, his movement is one of his greatest assets, avoid being trapped and/or ganged up on.
- Try and avoid characters with stun, snare and silence abilities. Survivability is Genji’s greatest asset.
- Use the Score screen to your advantage, see if any players have bought upgrades that can harm you or seriously damage your game plan and respond accordingly.
- Monarch blessing (depending on the upgrades) can save teammates from an almost certain death.
- Do not spam Monarch Blessing, as you will never know when you really need it.
- Cocooning a flying enemy such as Lonestar’s Bull, Yuri or a Humming Droid will plummet them to the ground.
- Cocooning an enemy in movement (like off an ability or jump pad, Cocoon will follow same movement pattern. However Moon Nectar health packs, spawned Humming Drone and Prefab Cocoon explosion all occur at the point of the target being cocooned.
Here are some Hints, Tips and Tricks to use while playing against Genji:
- Use the tips given in this tutorial for playing Genji to your advantage
- The cocoon spit can be dodged. Make sure to either get under a platform to stop it from capturing you or learn to anticipate when they will you it. (e.g. when they are trying to escape from you or when you are very close to him)
- Characters like Raelynn and Coco are good at combating Genji. Coco’s Blaze attack and Raelynn’s Time Rift with slowing and damage can capture Genji. Melee characters are also good against Genji
- Genji and explosions don’t mix so you can use Clunks Self-destruct, Lonestar’s TNT (bouncing is good against Genji) and Derpl’s nuke to get the better of him.
- Since Genji’s Butterfly shot has piercing try to avoid all teammates walking in a straight line
- Genji is a slow character, use that to your advantage
- Try waiting until Genji’s Monarch Blessing shield wears off before using an ability since its reduces a percentage of damage and not a set number of damage
- Use the score screen to your advantage. It tells you what upgrades Genji has bought.
- Cocoon can be reflected
- Silencing, stunning and snaring Genji is a great help in taking him down
- Try ganging up on Genji when he is by himself
- Even though Genji is slow, his movement in the air is one of his greatest assets, keeping him in one place or preventing him from running away would help alot.
- Admiral Swiggins and Scoop of Justice are great Genji counters due to their ability to keep Genji from escaping.
Conclusion and Summary
Genji is a very versitile support and has lots of potential. His kit is very flexable and can be used many ways. From dealing with enemy Awesomenauts individually to keeping his whole team in the lane, Genji has alot of unique talents to work with.
The most important things to take away from this guide are these things:
- Your movements and actions should always reflect your kit.
- Don’t be afraid to stray from or experiement with a set kit.
- Sticking with an ally is always good but Genji can carry his own. Just not against the whole team.
- Your Cocoon is your best ability and is a game changer when used well.
- Use your versitility to your advantage.
So thank you everyone for sticking with me through this whole guide and thanks for all the love and support. So best of luck to all of you and make the Great Space Butterfly proud.
