This guide demonstrates the difference between the HD Pack models and the normal models for Half-Life 1. Click the guide to read more!
What is the HD Pack?
The Half-Life High Definiton Pack (or HD Pack) is a content pack that contains higher definition models and textures for the enemies, allies, and everything in between of Half-Life 1, HL: Opposing Force, HL: Blue Shift, and (somewhat) Team Fortress Classic.
This guide will demonstrate the model differences between the old half life models and the ones included in the HD Pack. I will add a description of the changes from the old models to the HD ones.
NOTE: If there is a missing character or weapon that is not present in this guide, that means there is no HD counterpart to it (examples of this are the Female Assasin and Gonarch). This applies to the entire guide.

Humans
- The design for the guards hasn’t changed much with the HD pack. They still have their iconic ballistic vest and bulletproof helmet. The face of the guard has been edited to look more human, and the collar of his shirt has been raised. Their nametag is now readable. The guards also come with a different animation set in the HD pack, demonstrated by the idle position in the above picture.

“Einstien” Scientist
- Same design, different style. The shirt/tie textures have been redone in higher quality and the shirt collar has been raised. The face is also in higher quality.
“Luther” Scientist
- Similar to the Einstien Scientist, most of the changes have been done to the body. The face of the scientist has been made more square and higher quality.
“Slick” Scientist
- As the other 2 scientists display, the body has been altered the most, and this scientist is no exception. The entire model has been remade in higher quality.
“Walter” Scientist
- Same applies to this scientist. Model has been remade in higher quality. Collar has been raised and nametag is “readable”.

Regular Grunt
- The regular grunt has undergone some very noticable changes. The shape of his head has been made to look more human, and his military vest has been re-modeled, along with his arms and legs. All of the grunts have a different idle pose in the HD pack, which removes their hunch and makes them stand up straight like the hardened military units they are.
- Something I’ve noticed while studying the models is that the helmet for the Regular Grunt is actually bulletproof, similar to the helmet that the security guards wear. No other HECU unit has this trait. This bulletproof functionality is retained in the HD version of the Normal Grunt.
Shotgun Grunt
- The shotgun grunt shares a body model with the regular grunt, but has a different head model. It shares the head design, being a balaclava with the eyes covered by glasses, with the normal model, but is remodeled to accommodate for the HD pack.
Demolitions Grunt
- This grunt model also shares a body with the normal grunt, but with darker skin. the Demo Grunt also has a different head model. The head has been remodeled, giving the Demo Grunt a black beret and removes the cigar. The texture for the new head also comes with a thin moustache.
Commander Grunt
- Like the other grunts, this grunt shares a body model, aswell as a head. The head model for the Commander Grunt, is a reskinned version of the Demolitions Grunt, with lighter skin and a clean face. Like the Demo Grunt, the Commander Grunt also wears a black beret, contrasting the red beret worn by the normal model.
The G-Man
- While the design of the G-Man remains the same, the HD version of the model differs slightly. The suit is a deeper shade of blue and is more round. The head is more round and detailed, and his briefcase is slightly smaller and thinner.
Not Listed: Female Assassin/BlackOps Female (no HD model available)
Aliens
Headcrab Zombie
- Not much has changed with the Zombie, the model has been made more 3D and the faint skull on the headcrab has been removed. Small green lumps have been added to the left arm.
Alien Slave/Vortiguant
- The Vortiguant has been remodeled to be more detailed and higher-poly, much like everything else in the HD pack. The green ring on his neck has been made less noticeable and the green cuffs have been made smaller.
Bullsquid
- More details have been added, such as modeled eyes and more advanced mouth tentacles, with newly-added teeth aswell. The textures seem to be smeared.
Alien Grunt
- The grunt has been made more detailed, with a re-modeled chest and a better quality hivehand. The metal armour has been made more reflective, and the colours have been made more vibrant.
Houndeye
- Small changes here. The back ribs have been made more aligned and raised, along with a more detailed and HQ texture.
