Overview

This guide will teach you how to survive the world of Outlast and what not to do.

What is an Outlast?

Outlast is a survival horror game made by Red Barrels in which you can not fight and your only options are “run”, “hide”, or “die.”

How do I Outlast?

You are equiped with a camcorder from late 2005 and has a night vision function that helps quite a bit when you can’t see in the dark. The night vision mode takes up a lot of battery life and this will bring back flashbacks from players of Alan Wake, as you will spend a good amount of time looking for batteries with 3% charge left.

Considering you have no way of attacking or defending yourself from enemies with table legs, your best bet is to run and hide.

You have 3 places you can hide.

  • You can hide in a locker
  • You can hide under a bed
  • You can hide under a desk
  • Or you can hide in a dark corner, provided there is a table or object you can get behind.

You can also abuse the AI to your fullest potential as every enemy I’ve encountered has the exact same AI. I will cover how to abuse the AI in another section of this guide.

Why do I not Outlast?

So you keep dying? Well a great way to not die is to
abuse the AI to the best of your abilities.
Which is what this section will cover.
The AI has 3 main behaviors.

  • Passive (Also known as hippie mode.)
  • Suspicious (Also known as slightly angry hippie mode.)
  • Aggressive (Also known as “I just railed a line of coke LET’S GO BOY” mode.)

Passive means they’re unaware of your presence.
Suspicious means they know you exist and are searching for you.
Aggressive means they ran out of cocaine and are getting ready to throw a table at you.

A great way to abuse the AI is to throw them for a loop which is very easy.
Most of the time they will have very strict patrol patterns which you can then easily learn and avoid the areas.

But sometimes you are forced to come into contact with the enemies and must run in order to actually get to where you need to. The very first enemy encounter actually has this happen but it’s easy to avoid, as you run faster than the Variants and, as a human, you are much smarter.

A great way to abuse AI is to trap them temporarily.
This is an example of the AI being trapped in a bathroom stall.
Depending on the enemy type, they will either bash the door open in 3-5 hits, or they will calmly open the door and keep chasing you.

What are the enemies in Outlast?

The main enemies you’ll encounter are the following:

  • Variants (often refered to as Florida People)
  • Chris Walker (often refered to as Christian Weston Chandler)

  • Richard Trager (often refered to as Elderly Florida Man)

  • The Twins (Often refered to as Machete Wielding Nudists)

  • Walrider (Often refered to as Danny Phantom)

Now that you know the main enemies, here’s some information about them.

The information about the enemies is from Nightmare Mode.
Variants:

  • Can kill in two hits on the Nightmare mode.
  • First enemy you encounter.
  • Can break through a door in 5 hits.
  • Dogsh*t AI.

Chris Walker:

  • Kills in one hit on Hard – Nightmare
  • Breaks through doors in 3 hits.
  • You can hear him by the sound of the chains around his ankles and forearms.
  • Is the size of a small family Sedan.

Richard Trager:

  • Literally just a copy and paste of the Variants AI.
  • Does the same damage as Variants.
  • Breaks through doors at the speed of a Variant.
  • Has a large pair of scissors and likes to castrate people.

The Twins:

  • The two of them walk around naked with machetes.
  • Will one-shot you no matter what, regardless of difficulty.
  • Are very easy to avoid because they will only walk towards you instead of run.
  • They break down doors in 5 hits

Walrider:

  • Is a black ghost thing that doesn’t care about the laws of physics.
  • Kills in one hit on Hard – Nightmare.
  • Can be seen with Night Vision and, when not using Night Vision, he’ll blur your screen and then become visible within 3 meters.
  • Does not give two sh*ts about doors. He won’t break them down, he’ll just simply slide under it like a sheet of paper.

Congrats, you can read.
Good luck
Pro-tip: Don’t die.
