Dying Light Guide

Hardcore mode for Dying Light

Hardcore mode

Overview

One thing I noticed about this game was, when you reached higher levels or unlocked certain abilities, most of the fear left and was replaced by… fun. Even laughter at some points. If you want this as a horror game, that shouldn’t happen. So I’ve decided to create a new gamemode I’ve called Hardcore (so original).

So you’re interested? Great!

If you do decide to play like this, it’s strictly an honor-based system. There’s nothing preventing you from breaking the rules. This mode is simply there to add more immersion and turn you into something other than a parkour and zombie-slaying god.
After playing the game like this, I can honestly say it’s much, much more immersive and challenging.

Banned Skills

Several skills make this game very easy. So to balance the game, many of them are banned.

  • Nimble Hands (makes looting much too fast.)
  • Camoflauge Attack (really overpowered.)
  • Instant Escape (Overpowered)
  • Windmill (overpowered, not realistic.)
  • Ultimate Combatant (No combat stamina? No way.)
  • Dropkick (Overpowered and too much fun, sorry.)
  • Vault (Makes it much too easy to avoid crowds)
  • Tackle (With it, you don’t even have to avoid zombies.)
  • Slam (Very unrealistc)

Special Skills

Some skills deserve to be left in, but have special rules.

  • Grappling Hook
This one is hard to moderate. It’s extremely unrealistic and makes escaping a breeze. The rules for the grappling hook are easy to remember:
    -Don’t use it during combat/chases
-Only use it when it’s realistic (no grappling DOWN to something to avoid damage)

  • Melee Throw
This move is EXTREMELY overpowered, especcially right when you can unlock it.
    The rules are:
-You can only throw light, bladed weapons. This means knives, hatchets, cleavers, etc. NO heavy or two-handed weapons.

  • Ground pound
This is horrifically unrealistic. You aren’t allowed to use it, but you can unlock it to aquire Drop Attack.

Banned Items

Some weapons or items are simply overpowered and silly.

  • EXPcalibur (Overpowered as hell.)
  • Korek Machete (Also Overpowered as hell.)
  • Pyza Suit (Hovering is not possible.)
  • Air Strike (I don’t think the government will give you a personal air to land combat vehicle.)

Inventory Rules

Here’s where the game really gets difficult.

You can only carry four weapons at a time.
It’s not realistic in the slightest to have a guy free running for hours while carrying 30 pounds of weapons. your backpack is not that big.
*If you carry a shield, that counts as two weapons.

Two handed weapons count as two weapons
You can carry two small weapons and one large one, or two large ones and nothing else

You can only carry one gun at a time
The same rules apply here as well. Pistols count as one weapon, while shotguns and rifles count as two.

You can only carry up to 20 of any item
These include firecrackers, flares, lockpicks, grenades, throwing knives, medkits, and other usables.

None of this:

Final Rules

You can only repair weapons while in a safe zone.
If all of your super awesome weapons break, you’ll have to leg it to the nearest safe zone.
Why? Because there’s no way a man with metal parts can fix a broken crowbar in 2 seconds. That just doesn’t make sense.

Finally, no using medkits while in the middle of combat.
You can retreat to a rooftop to heal yourself or simply run away. This makes nights especcially dangerous, because you won’t be able to heal yourself while being actively chased.

In general, try to act realistically
Decapitating a zombie with a single swing from a flaming electric fisherman’s knife doesn’t really make sense. Remember: Axes, Hammers, and Machetes are the REAL zombie killers.

That’s it!
If you’ve tried this and found it fun, tell me! If you’ve tried it and hate it, tell me how it can be improved. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I hope you have fun with this game, no matter what you decide to do.
