How to ABH (Accelerated Back Hop)

Overview

In this guide I will be showing you how to ABH (Accelerated Back Hop). In this guide, there will be binds, tips, and tricks to get you started and on your feet.

The binds

Now, the binds are very important as they will be able to let you ABH. There is only 2 binds, but they’ll make a huge difference when you start.
The binds goes as follows:
bind mwheeldown +jump
bind mwheelup +jump
If you can’t get the dev console up, you go to your main menu, and go Options > Advanced > Enable developer console. After that, look at your controls to find which key that it’s binded to.

How to initiate

Now, ABHing doesn’t require too much to initiate, and I picked it up relatively quickly. All you need to do, is sprint foward, crouch jump, look backwards, and keep holding crouch while spamming your mouse wheel up and down to jump really fast.
I need to mention that you NEVER hold W or S while back hopping. This will ruin your momentum. You can however, hold A and D after you’ve gotten a bit of speed. It will not kill your momentum.

What surface you need to properly go flying

A ramp surface, in half life is quite dear to the element of ABHing. It basically lets you go flying in the air if you hit it correctly and that the surface is the right type. In episode two, you can use this to grenade boost back hop (which i’ll talk about later) and air strafe into the entrance skipping all of the walking you have do to with the Vortigaunt and completely skipping chapter 2. You can do this by grabbing a barrel, and putting it where you want. After that, angle the pallet next to the cart of Hopper mines, and then put the pallet at the proper angle, GBBH (Grenade boost back hop) hit the pallet, jump off it and air strafe into the entrance. There are some rocks in HL2/HL2E2 that have a proper surface that you can Back hop from. Not all work, but you might as well try.

How to grenade boost backhop

Grenade boosted back-hopping is very complicated. The SMG grenade back hop is easier in my opinion as the regular grenade back hop you need to time properly. This is a boosted back hop that can send you at even more speeds and also make you go flying. Usually higher than normal. If you ask me, I can humbly say that you can hold the grenade, initiate a back hop, face downwards and it’ll make you go flying as well. But with more of a boost upwards. Grenade boost back hopping is the hardest hop (of course) because it requires you to know Backwards back hopping. I’ll talk about that in the next chapter.

How to backwards back hop

Backwards back hopping usually is slower, but is required in order to do grenade boosted backhops. All you have to do is keep facing backwards, and sprint crouch jump backwards, and start spamming the mouse wheel. This is extremely easy as I learnt it in about 3 – 4 minutes.

Conclusion

In conclusion, ABHing isn’t usually used much, but is very helpful. It is easier to learn than Bhopping and after you master the ways of the ABH, you can get real far! Lots of speedruns usually use this as it is one of the easiest ways of getting around fast. If you’ve ever seen the Dwahmov Condensed speedrun, you know.
