How to add new character templates and mod sprites!

Overview

A guide for modding character sprites and adding template characters made by other players to your game.

Finding game data

Everything BB saves is within its own folder. By default, it’s C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonB astard Bonds. You can also find a useful readme there and a changelog for whenever the game is updated!

Adding character templates

Character templates are used by BB as preset characters in character creation (Load Outfit), and show up in-game as recruitable companions. You can find them in the Roster folder. Character templates are saved purely in this folder in a neat PNG format.

Here’s an example that I made! He’s a Lawful Blast+Ward character. If you add the PNG above to the Roster folder, he’ll show up in Load Outfit and randomly shows up in-game.

Keep in mind! Alignment, allegation, personality, and skill point distribution all matter in character creation, and are saved in the PNG. This is what determines what the character is when you recruit them in-game. The character’s name is what you name the PNG, though.

Adding custom sprites

This game also includes sprite modding support! Any character in the game with a name can be modded. Tips on creating custom sprites are provided with the readme, but I’ll provide an explanation too.

I recommend using [link] to edit sprites. Sprites must be placed in the PCCustom folder. Each one has to be a PNG in 80×64 format with a transparent background. The sprite should be as centered as possible on the bottom; Baako.png is an example. Name the PNG what you want to replace. Any character can be replaced, not just template ones, so for example if you want to change Greave’s sprite, just name it Greave.png.

Here’s an example I made! You can probably tell what he looks like. If you put this PNG in the PCCustom folder, a character with a name matching the filename will use this sprite instead.

Also: there are a few scenes in the game where the player character, uh…loses their clothes. These don’t happen often, so it’s not necessarily something to worry about, but if you wish to replace the nude sprite for the intended character as well, put another custom sprite PNG in the Nude folder with the character’s name. The game won’t break if nothing is there, it just uses the default sprite instead.
