Overview
The counterattacks can be tricky to get into, but are very effective once you’ve mastered them. As a beginner you often get this upon trying to counter: Geralt does the counter-animation and hits his foe, yet recieves full damage from the enemy’s blow. The following will show you how to perform counterattacks properly and how you can easily learn the technique.
Performing a counterattack
- unlock the ability to counter via the swordsmanship-tree
- have at least one full Vigor, otherwise you can’t counter
- lock onto your opponent (you’ll see a small symbol on him)
- hold the block-button (E) and wait for him to attack
- when your foe takes his swing, you’ll notice how the small symbol on him briefly changes to a sword
- as soon as this happens press the fast swing button (left mouse) while you keep holding E to block (don’t forget this or you’ll get hit)
- Geralt will now perform the counterattack without recieving damage
How to train counterattacks fast and easy
- go into a town and search for a single guard
- quicksave! you can load the save if you die or have the feel, you mastered the technique
- draw you silver sword (2) – silver is less effective against humans, so you can hit him more often
- attack him once
- wait for him to fight back and try to counter as discribed in the part above
- don’t fight back actively, only try to perform counterattacks
- if your Vigor is empty just evade him until it refills
- if you die, reload and repeat the process
- if you have the feeling, you know how to counter, reload and continue playing normal
- don’t save or countinue playing after you’ve killed some guards or you will have to pay a fine for your crimes
