Overview
In this guide I’ll teach you how to create/install a custom/downloaded flag. I’ll also recommend program(s) that can aid you.
Where?
- If you bought the game on Steam, right click on KSP that’s in your Library. A list of options will roll out. Click on properties (it’s at the bottom of that list). A new window will open up.
- Click on the local files tab, and from there click on the ‘Browse Local Files’ option.
Before I go ahead with the next part, if you got the game from the KSP Website or Pirate-Bay (Bloody Pirate D: ) do this next part without the first part to do with Steam.
- In the KSP directory (that you found using the first part or where you put it after purchasing it off the KSP Website), open the Gamedata folder.
- From there, go to the Squad folder. At the top of the Squad directory, there should be a Flags folder. Open that, and all the flags should be there. Thats one of the hard parts done.
Programs?
I’ll start by saying yes. You can make flags for KSP no problem in MS Paint. But for transparancy and more precise tools I’d recommend PaintDotNet or Gimp. These won’t hit your pockets like bricks, don’t worry. They’re completely free. These programs can support transparancy as well as do a lot more than MS Paint. If you have more programs that are not listed here but you think should, then don’t hesitate to tell me where to find them.
Other Programs
Here are some useful programs that have been used by people who’ve seen this guide:
- PhotoFilTRE,
- Pixlr,
- Mediabang Paint Pro,
This list will grow as more image-editing programs are suggested.
Warning! Do not post links! Post names. I’ll investigate them myself and Steam won’t think you’re spam!
How?
For this, I’ll be using PaintDotNet, my personal favourite image editor. I’m not sure about Gimp, but it should be roughly the same process as PaintDotNet.
- You start by creating a new image (PaintDotNet users can do this by pressing Ctrl+N ). A prompt will come up asking what size image/canvas you’d like. For KSP flags, it will be (in pixels, not inches, etc): Width: 256 Height: 160.
- Now do what you like in that space. Draw a really beautiful bird or a crappy rubber duck. I don’t care. Go mad!!
In-game stuff
Now you have a flag. Now what? Since the 0.23.5 patch, you can have your flag on the side of your ship. And while on EVA with a Kerbal, you’ll notice a flag on their back-pack. Explore the KSC and you’ll see multiple flagpoles with your flag hoisted up high, flapping in the Kerbal winds.
