Overview
This is a guide to enable the online updater in the Steam Version of Retroarch, and allows you to play a variety of systems which aren’t available as cores on the main version of Retroarch, including:- Playstation 2 (PCSX2)- PSP (PPSSPP)- Gamecube/Wii (Dolphin)- DS (Desmume)- 3DS (Citra)
Enabling the Updater
Keep in mind this may mess with your configuration files a little bit, so its recommended you do this on a clean install, although it did work when I tested it with my configured install
1.
Download a copy of Retroarch off the official website (link —> [link]) and install it in a convenient location. It defaults to the root of the C: drive (the top layer where Program Files and Users is located).
3.
Load up the standalone version of Retroarch and close it to generate additional folders/configuration files.
4.
Select all files in the directory in the standalone version of Retroarch and copy them over to the main directory of the Steam version of Retroarch.
5.
Overwrite any files that are flagged as duplicates.
6. (optional but recommended)
Uninstall the standalone copy by using the uninstaller present in the directory (which is called uninstall.exe) or by just deleting the whole folder.
Warning!!!
I have no idea how this will conflict with files if Retroarch ever gets updated on Steam, but its quite easy to reinstall the files, and there are methods of backing up the Retroarch configuration, and core/game specific configurations.
Final Words + Links
Make sure to rate this guide and give it a favourite if it helped you, I think its really promising that Retroarch even managed to get released on Steam with the functionality it has, and it would be good if it was common knowledge that its very easy to re-enable all of the cool additional features that it has, so please do share this guide 🙂
