How to get good at Colonies Online!

Overview

This guide will introduce you to the basics of the game and help you get off of the tutorial planet (Planet 1), as soon as possible! It will also describe the basics of the game such as currencies, items, weapons, exploration, and planet difficulty!

Spawning Into The World – The Beginning!

Before we begin! This game is in alpha stage and a very early access! With that being said, this game has a very unique game concept! Massive potential!

[Spawning into the World – The Beginning]

-The main town is called “Outpost Delta”. You will come back here to sell your junk from monsters, buy new equipment, and travel to distant planets!

-Make sure to check the terminal called “Item Pick Point”. Depending on where you got the game, you might have items to help start your journey!

-The “Outpost Commander” sells a “Beacon”. Right click this item to instantly travel back to Outpost Delta or your ILU (For future planets)! Beacons stack, so when you get money, have a few on hand so you aren’t stuck running back to base!

-Your first goal should be to get off of planet 1 as soon as possible. The monsters here don’t drop anything that sells well, so it is inefficien to farm Planet 1. To get off of planet 1, you will need a few things which require you to farm monsters on Planet 1 for a brief time.

-Travel outside of base to find “Lairs”. Lairs spawn enemies! The lower the health of the lair, the more monsters come out. When the lair dies, a guardian spawns, which drops loot that sells for more money! Lairs on planets 2 and above work differently then the tutorial Planet 1!!!

[Items Required to leave Planet 1]

1.) ILU Module Shield – 1 Unit and 10 Sn (Equip by pressing L)

2.) LU Module Core – 1 Unit and 64 Sn (Equip by pressing L)

3.) A weapon that does at least 20 DPS, the higher the better. (I also prefer weapons with fast reload times between 1s-1.5s)

4.) 1.5 Units for travel off planet 1 and 1.5 Units to travel back to planet 1. (3 Units total)

-If you received a weapon through the Item Pick Point, you will need approximately 6 units to get off the planet.

-If you didn’t receive a weapon through the Item Pick Point, you will need 6 units plus whatever it costs for a better weapon. Prices vary! Check the VTI Supply Officer!

Once you have the items and currency needed to depart, you are done with the tutorial Planet 1!!! Rejoice because starting on Planet 2, things start to ramp up!

Planet 2 and Beyond! A Colonist Odyssey!

Once you are ready to travel off Planet 1, the only thing you will use planet 1 for (In the current state of the game), is to sell items, repair, travel, and buy various items for building. Possibly meeting up with friends as well!

[ILU Unit]

-When you arrive on another planet, you will have an ILU unit placed for you. This is where you will go to return to Planet 1 to buy/sell items.

-Right click the ILU and click the planet you wish to travel and click “Call”. This will start a 1 minute and 30 second countdown for your shuttle to arrive!

-When the countdown reaches zero, you can then depart. Click the depart button after selecting your planet. (If you want to buy/sell, select Planet 1 and choose Outpost Delta which will show an icon on the map)

-Other players can destroy your ILU (Which is why you need a ILU Shield Module). If destroyed, you will be stranded on the planet. (To return to planet 1 if stranded, you must commit suicide)

-When playing in a squad, ILU system is buggy. Only one person will spawn an ILU when you travel as a team. Make sure all players leave BEFORE the ILU owner or else the ILU will disappear and your friends will be stranded.

[Lairs – Planets 2 and Beyond!]

-Lairs on planets 2 and beyond have three phases based on how much health they have left!

Phase 1 (75% Health) – Guardians spawn and must be killed before the lair can take damage again!

Phase 2 (50% Health) – Avengers spawn and must be killed before the lair can take damage!

Phase 3 (~1% Health) – The Queen spawns and when killed, the lair is destroyed!

Guardians and Avengers drop multiple items but the QUEEN, drops the most valuable items which will net you the most money! Items such as “Chitin” sell to the vendor for a lot! Queens also drop loot tokens called “Xenodin”.

-Each planet has two kinds of lairs. Large and Small! You can tell which is which by there health. Large lairs drop the higher loot tokens for the current planet and small lairs drop the lower of the two loot tokens.

[Loot Tokens – Xenodin]

-Queens have a chance to drop Xenodin! These are used as a loot currency at the “X-Dep Supply Officer”

-Xenodin currently have 6 tiers!

Planet 2 – Xenodin Influence Level 1 + 2

Planet 3 – Xenodin Influence Level 3 + 4

Planet 4 – Xenodin Influence Level 4 + 5

And so on… Like stated above, large lairs drop the higher xenodin of the planet and the small lairs drop the lower. Check the X-Dep Supply Officer to see what type of Xenodin you should be farming for. I have seen weapons that use Level 3 tokens that are better than Level 4 tokens!

[Weapon and Armor / Vendors]

-The weapons and armor in the store randomize every so often. The best weapon could be 600 DPS one day and the next it could be 700+. The times of vendor randomization is unknown.

-Armor mitigates damage.

-Defense mitigates damage and critical hits.

-Resistances on armor work, BUT it is up to you to figure out what type of attack a certain monster does. For example, a red ranged attack is most likely fire. So an armor with burn resistance will negate damage of that type.

[Planet Difficulty]

-Planets 2, 3, and 4 can be soloed once you obtain a better shield, armor, and weapon. Planet 4 can be tricky though! All I have to say is FAST LARVA! A lot easier in a group!

-Planet 5 is best done in a group. The monsters have more health and do a lot more damage. It feels like the monster density is very high as well so its a lot easier to get swarmed!

-Planet 6 is currently the hardest planet. Very beefy monsters but also the most rewarding. You will obtain the most money and the best Xenodin from this planet!

With all that being said, this is a skill based game! Every planet is technically soloable if you are a good player! Learn to dodge attacks and be mindful of your surroundings! You do NOT want to be surrounded and swarmed!

Building and Various Tips!

[Building a Colony]

-You can create an outpost anywhere you want which can even have its own mining facility to harvest crafting material when crafting is implemented!

-My information on building a base is very limited. What I do know is that your base needs walls with shield, turrets, and lots of power. If your base runs out of power, your turrets stop working and your shield walls can be easily killed by players!

-Building a base has several perks!

[Building Perks]

1.) Storage of items… This is the only way to have a bank so far! Other players can loot your bank! So make sure to have a properly installed base with lots of power and turrets/walls with shield!!!

2.) Surgical Facilities! Your character can be wounded. If you are wounded, your health bar will have a red portion. If you get too wounded, when you die, instead of going intoa coma, you will immediately die and lost 10% money and 10% durability.

3.) The ability to be self sustainable in the wilderness without having to go back to Planet 1 to sell! You can essentially store all your items to sell later.

[Various Tips]

1.) When your character portrait has a red highlight, it means you are in combat. You can’t use a beacon when you are in combat. Make sure no enemies are near you! If you are seriously stuck in combat for a long period of time, logging out fixes it but you shouldn’t have to do that.

2.) Item quality determines the sell value of an item. It is one thousandth of the quality. For example, 2000 quality will sell for 2 Un (Units) and 2100 quality will sell for 2 Un 10 Sn,

3.) The death penalty is 10% loss of all money on your character and 10% durability! If you are rich, there is a way to store your money in a safe way! The commander in Delta Outpost sells “Ingots”… You can’t lose items so if you are rich and don’t want to risk losing a lot of money, buy ingots for money storage!

4.) Saving up for the best personal shield helps a lot! Once you can farm planet 2 and above, its easy to get money! Just takes some effort! The best personal shield grants 48 shield and 0.85 regeneration! Will make your character a lot stronger!

5.) Resource diggers are personal mining units where you can discover areas in the world that have certain kinds of materials. There are 3 types: Mineral, crystal, and polymer!

6.) Crafting is not implemented yet but is said to be coming soon. Possibly early 2015? Who knows! If you build a base, you can get acquinted with harvesting by building a mining facility! It will give you the knowledge needed for when it is implemented as well as crafting material you can save up in the meantime.
