How to make a basic ship in Space Engineers for Space Engineers

How to make a basic ship in Space Engineers

Overview

So, you’ve found out how to use the welder, grinder, drill and rifle. But now you are thinking:”Hey… uh, flying in jetpack is nice but I would like to make a miner and a constructor!”Well, do not fear, as I am here!

The basic parts

So, you’re gonna need some blocks to help you make your ship:

  • Gyroscopes
  • Thrusters
  • Cockpit / remote control
  • Antenna
  • Small – Large Cargo Container
  • Landing Gear
  • Connector
  • Light Armor Block

So, now you have hunted them down in your inventory, I am going to tell you what each DOES!

Gyroscopes; These allow you to roll, pitch and yaw.

Thrusters; Well, it’s in the name, BUT we do need to go through some things:
Ions, work in space and on the Moon, and require platinium, a space / Moon only ore!
Atmos, work on Mars, Titan, Earth, Europa, and Alien, but are not effective AT ALL in space and on the Moon.
Hydros, work in all environments, have a low power cost, but… they require hydrogen, which is obtained by using a H2/O2 generator to split the Oxygen molecules from the Hydrogen molecules, and also require to be conveyored to the H2/O2 Gen. You see those ice lakes or that snow in the mountains? Get digging if you want a hydro ship.

Thrusters also have 2 variants, small and large. Small use less power, and for hydrogen less fuel, but provide less lift. The large ones provide more lift, for more power and fuel usage.

Cockpit / RC; To control your ship, you either need a cockpit or a RC paired with an antenna (and if you are going the drone route, you’ll need a camera too!).

Antennas; Put a mark on your HUD, visible from a set distance. It is helpful to find lost ships, required to communicate to and fly drones.

Cargo Containers (S-L); It’s in the name. All you need to remember is to conveyor it to the cockpit/connector and you are good to go.

Landing Gears; Allow you to land and stop your ship from drifting away! Can also be used to pull other ships (maybe crashed ones?)

Connectors; These save a lot of time! they can be used to connect to another grid (that has a connector) and transfer cargo between them! (useful for mining/construction ships).

Light Armor Blocks; The frame for any ship will be light armor (maybe heavy, but if you are making your first ship don’t worry about that!).

Construction

So, you know what the parts do and have them ready, good.
Grab some steel and interior plates!

  • Place a landing gear and a basic steel line going along the landing gear.
  • Upon this you want to put a cockpit or a remote control (with an optional O2/H2 Gen).
  • Place a cargo container on the conveyor connection of this cockpit and put a few more going along with the line.
  • Place a connector at the end, so you can unload your ship!
  • Place a reasonable amount of atmospheric or ion thrusters on the ship. Assuming you are on Earth (which I reccomend to start on) put 6-8 small atmospheric thrusters up, 2-4 for left and right and 6 for forwards and back.
  • Add some gyroscopes to the ship somewhere – around 1-2.
  • Something I forgot to mention are batteries! Add 2-4 on your ship for power! Gotta feed those atmos to fly! (WARNING: Remember to connect to your basic station and recharge them!!!)
  • Add an antenna on there, and off you go.
  • Wait a moment, you’ve probably not welded it! Queue up some components, do a bit of digging and weld it up!

Are you done yet? Good. Hop in the cockpit or connect to the ship terminal if it is a drone (make sure your suit antenna is on if so by pressing O, and the ships!), make sure the batteries are on discharge or auto by using K and searching for them.

The moment of TRUTH! Press P! Has this guide been a waste of your time? Use W A S D Space and C. Does it fly? Tell me in the comments!
