Steering Hinges Walker
Create the base for your walker.
The steering hinge in front is used to steer your walker left and right. It works well with small walkers but the bigger it is, the more unreliable it gets.
Add wood blocks to the sides of the farthest wood block and of the hinge.
Turn your camera under the base and add double steering hinges on all 4 positions
Note that you can add additional blocks in between the hinges, as long as you don’t overdo it, it should still work.
Add pistons under all 4 hinge legs
Now, the rotations of the hinges. It is actually very simple
Change the front leg first. The upper hinge needs to go clockwise and the lower one counter clockwise. The other front leg needs to be opposite.
Turn towards the other 2 legs. These legs need to be opposite to the front legs. Easiest way to explain is that all of the legs need to be identical in a zig zag pattern.
If you have a walker with 9 legs like this, then you can notice that the legs are diagonally identical.
Make sure to change the keys however you see fit but also make sure the pistons match those keys, also in a zig zag pattern.
Steering Blocks Walker
Same base as before
This time instead of adding wood blocks to the sides, add steering blocks
Add pistons under them
The rotations of the steering blocks also need to be the same in a zig zag pattern, basically, they need to be the same on the same side if you have just 4 legs
Change the steering block keys to up and down if you want to and do the same to the pistons
Additional steering methods
In case you wish to build a big walker, then the steering hinge in front will be difficult to implement properly.
Therefore I have 2 simple ways of making it work!
Focus the middle of your walker, add a steering block and as many pistons and blocks as you need so when you activate the pistons, they raise your machine off the ground.
Once it is raised, you can use left and right (or whichever keys you set) to turn the walker around.
Add flying blocks to the sides of your walker like this
Make sure the keys are the same in a zig zag pattern so when you move the flying blocks, it turns you properly
That would be all! I believe you now know how to build and steer a walker! If not, let me know why and I’ll try to assist you.
