Overview
Before start I need to mention that im sorry for my english (is not my natal language) but I have to post this guide in eng and well… I hope you find this useful !
Intro
ยก Welcome to this New Guide !
Before start you need to know that all this about pixel art needs a lot of practice, patience and time to make your style more visually good.
To start you will need any edition program of your preference. In my case I will use Gimp 2.6 to edit with more zoom and more tools and Microsoft Paint to make some presentations and save my progress.
Steps
After know all that, if you want to make a new gun, you will need think about the ideal gun for the game and it’s model. Because we already have a real variety of guns in game that the players doesn’t use and will not be interesting have a similar reply of other existent gun.
so. if you have decided about the gun that you will make, let’s start with those steps:
- 1) Search a image of your gun in google (In my case I will use Galil ACE as reference)
- 2) Copy and Paste it in your preference program.
- 3) Resize it to the size of any similar gun in game.
Example:
Galil is 136×36 pixels of big so we will need to resize our reference to 138×36 (is not exactly but is just a example).
- 4) Paint the resized galil of black.
- 5) Fix borders and make it look proportional to the real gun.
- 6)Choose a palette of color for start to fill it.
- 7)Make base lines and basic details
- 8)Start to add some lights and new surfaces
- 9)Add more details and start to focus in make them with more perfection looking at the original reference (galil from google)
- 10) Keep fixing it until you think it’s done
- 11) Start to make the upgrades (Like the magazine, Sight, Frontal Grip, Etc.)
- 12) Having all almost finished, the next step is ask in the community (of SpriteBot or the official BRAIN/OUT server) if your gun is okay and wait for some tips.
- 13) If your gun was accepted by the community, the next step is post it #Submissions or ”Main Album” of VK BRAIN/OUT’s page
- 14) To post your gun you need:
-A image with good resolution of the gun with gradients
-Post the small version with all of the pieces in
And here are other tips to avoid a storm of negative feedback:
-Don’t use parts from other guns
-Don’t post a recolor
-Dont use more than enough palettes
-Don’t post the small version of the gun in your post with gradients in
-Don’t post any random themed skin/gun without a logic idea
-Don’t post no needed guns
-Don’t draw in resized guns (always work in 1:1 pixels)
-Don’t stole parts of other artists
Colors / Palettes
Here are some compilated colors from some weapons and works around the game
(The palettes with 3 colors are mixable with the most darkest color of other palettes)
If I forgot any color here’s the Splash with all guns in game [Update 1.8.2]
(Also, if the image seems blurry, open it in your browser with right click and download it)
Shadows / Draw Styles
Here are one tips to avoid some errors when you make some shadows or angles:
(There are more angles and stuff in the splash if you want to check other lights)
About the draw styles… there’s a lot of styles to see and practice in general, some artists uses different styles of shadows, proportions, palettes, dimentions, etc…
That’s why I recommend to keep practicing and learn of other artists in the community to improve your skills.
If you still have some doubts about something of shadows and colors, check this ! (it wasn’t made by me)
