Overview
This guide will show you how to mine an ENTIRE MOON FOR FUEL, without having to deal with the ghost. [WARNING SPOILERS] This guide contains spoilers for the main story. if you have not completed the full story then go away, unless you want spoilers.
Moon mining basics. basically before you complete the story.
Basics.
Moon mining is a great way to get fuel for your ships. The deeper you mine into the moon the more fuel you will find. But, the more fuel you carry, the faster the ghost comes towards you.
Gear
Moons have no atmospheres, so before you go moon mining, you will need a breathing E.P.P at least, or a mech with drills. If you are not really into your matter manipulator, then I suggest bringing bombs, pickaxes, drills, and an ore detector, if you can’t see the fuel. Armor will not really matter, because there are no moon enemies besides the ghost. unless you have mods. The moon also has small asteroid weather, so you will want to make it for underground FAST. Asteroids can not spawn unless the the background is the sky of the moon.

Ancient gateways.
How to find them:
Ancient gateways can spawn in any type of solar system, but not really that much in Gental star solar systems. Try looking is Temperate stars and up. Ancient gateways can only be activated by obtaining a vault key from the mysterious trader after finishing the story.
How to beat them:
Ancient gateways can be beaten by finding the boss room and defeating the golem inside. Each golem has a unique way of being defeated, and unique attacks. Once you have defeated them they explode into a ton of essences.
Essences:
Ancient essence can be found in the ancient gateway by destroying pots, killing the monsters inside, finding essence chests, and killing the boss.
How to activate them:
Ancient gateways can be activated by trading with the mysterious trader at the outpost after you have completed the main story. He will ask for various items, in exchange for 1 vault key, used to activate the ancient gateways.
The main reason of this guide.
Now that you have finished the ancient vault, it’s time to use the terraformer that you have gotten from the machine! Locate a moon that you wish to use the terraformer on, then when you place it, interact with it. It will ask you how many essence you would like to use to terraform, go to the max.
Wait for it to terraform the moon, and when it’s done you will notice that the spooked effect is gone on your upper left. If you wish, you can terraform it into a habitable planet entirely, but you’ll need a ton of essence. And you’re done!
Now you have an entire moon to mine for fuel! Once you terraform it, the fuel will still be there, just waiting for you to mine it!
