How to Modernize DOOM

Overview

This guide will aim to help you modernize DOOM while still keeping the spirit of the original alive.

Steps

We will be using only 2 things for this:
GZDoom and SmoothDoom

GZDoom adds a plethora of QoL features as well as updating the graphics in a faithful way, and will also be used to load SmoothDoom. SmoothDoom does exactly what it says, it will smooth some animations out to make things look more fluid.

STEP 2:

Create a new folder on your desktop.

STEP 3:

Locate your DOOM installation. Go to the game in your steam library. Right click and then go to properties > local files > broswe local files.

This should open up your game folder. Open the folder named ‘base’.

STEP 4:

Now, move SmoothDoom.pk3 into the folder on your desktop. After, move the contents of the GZDoom .zip you just downloaded into that folder as well.

In your open ‘base’ folder, locate DOOM.WAD. Copy and paste this file into the folder.

STEP 6:

Now, run gzdoom.exe. Play for a few seconds and then exit the game. This will create a .ini file that we will use in the next step.

STEP 7:

Open the .ini file. Either scroll or CTRL+f until you see [Global.Autoload] underneath that, type the following:

Path=SmoothDoom.pk3

Now save the file and exit.

AT THIS POINT, YOU ARE DONE. THE NEXT STEPS WILL BE SO THAT YOU CAN PLAY THROUGH STEAM.

STEP 8:

In the ‘base’ folder, rename dosbox.exe to (anything you want).exe. Now, copy and paste all of the contents of your desktop folder into the ‘base’ folder. Replace the DOOM.WAD file, although this does not matter as long as it is there.

STEP 9:

Rename gzdoom.exe to dosbox.exe. Now when you launch the game through steam, it will load GZDoom with SmoothDoom enabled.

PSA:

You will need to configure some things in the settings of DOOM to make this game easily playable, but these settings are easy to access and self-explanatory, so set it up how you would like to play.

This guide is meant to provide a means to play the game in an approachable manner. There are many other mods that will change the game, but this guide is meant to be a very basic guide for those who would like to play DOOM in a modern style but still get the essense of vanilla.
