Overview
How to get the five items that will give all of your future captains a stat bonus as part of their legacy.
Introduction
It is very likely that some of your captains in Sunless Sea will die before their time. If they spend some of their time at zee finding these books, however, your next captain may find their challenges a little easier.
These books are legacy items that will give all following captains a starting bonus of a particular stat.
The Boke of Sharps (+25 Iron)
“This barely qualifies as a book. Dozens of scraps of paper have been crammed into a scuffed folio. Each bears helpful advice on murder, and, often, a stain.”
WARNING: Completing these actions will make The Dark-Spectacled Admiral and The Voracious Diplomat inaccessible.
Follow the Anarchists’ storyline by supporting their faction until they can take over London.
The way to do this is straightforward if repetitive – simply ferry their materials from Vienna on the surface to Fallen London.
- Take the Cumaean Canal up to the surface. As with all journeys to the surface, make sure that you have plenty of fuel or you run the risk of being stranded up there.
- Travel through Naples to Vienna, meet the Fidgeting Agitator and collect the Supplies for the Work.
- Return to Fallen London and give the supplies to your contact there.
- Repeat.
The supremacy value for the Anarchists will raise by 1 for each successful delivery. Once you have raised it to 7, a new event will be available in Fallen London for beginning the Anarchists’ revolution. Completing this story will see the Anarchists take over much of the city and earn you the Boke of Sharps.
A Dream of Red (+25 Hearts)
“The missing chapter of the Crimson Book.”
There are two ways for a character to earn A Dream of Red. You may do the majority of the first one during a game without realising, but there’s no way to rush it. The second one, on the other hand, can be started and finished very quickly if you have the resources.
Visit Hunter’s Keep with Recent News from London and use it to attract the attention of the sisters so that one of them will have lunch with you. You can only get Recent News if you haven’t been home in a while, so it takes a while to get to the climax of this story (between 4 and 20 visits, depending on your luck). Eventually when you return to the keep something strange is going on and the house burns down. If you pass two Mirror challenges and a Veils challenge, you can save Phoebe – who becomes known as the Scarred Sister from then on.
If you take her to Naples and pay 100 echoes for her to travel home, she will give you the book.
Complete the storyline of the Austere Acolyte on Station III. This is done by delivering her longboxes and/or doing errands for her. These, in turn, will open up conversation options wherein you can learn more about the acolyte. After you help her with the autopsy, the ‘Once more’ event will be available. Select ‘Real consolation’ to receive the book.
Manual of Miracles (+25 Veils)
“Not miracles, really. But they’ll never get close enough to see the difference.”
This book can only be obtained by a captain for whom you choose ‘A Past Wreathed in Shadows’ (i.e. no past / decide later). This can be changed later by talking with any of your officers, but doing so before you complete the last sphinxstone delivery will make the manual of miracles unobtainable again.
Travel to the Salt Lions and offer to carry a load of sphinxstone to London. You need 200 echoes and 20 cargo space in your hold to do this. Take it to London and collect your payment. Repeat this process about another 4 times.
When you make your final delivery, a Bright-Eyed Sequencer from the Dawn Machine will ask you to deliver it to them at the Grand Geode instead. Say either yes or no, it doesn’t matter for this. Immediately afterwards, you’ll be approached by a Dusty Gentleman who asks you to deliver it to somewhere else in London. Accepting his proposal and following through will win you the manual.
The Horizon Codex (+25 Pages)
“Herein are recorded certain details of a Voyage through xxxxx in the company of xxxxxx, on xxxxxx….”
There are two ways for a character to earn the Horizon Codex. The first of these is a lot simpler to complete, but I’ve added the Dawn Supremacy path as well for the sake of thoroughness.
WARNING: Completing these actions will end your current captain’s game.
Essentially this means completing the Merchant Venturer’s storyline by filling the required number of his orders (between 6 and 10, depending on your luck), delivering the goods that he has requested to him in Fallen London. After the last of these has been completed, a new story commences, “The Venturer has a plan”. The plan requires you to take his materials (for which you will need 40 hold space) to him in Avid Horizon. If you start the quest without realising that it will take up most of your hold until you complete it, you can always ditch the supplies and get them from him again in London.
Once you are in Avid Horizon with the materials – along with a searing enigma and at least 50 hearts – select the “Open the High Gate” option and pass beyond with him to receive the codex.
WARNING: Completing these actions will make the Dark-Spectacled Admiral unavailable.
Raise the Dawn Machine supremacy by carrying out tasks for them. You can get started on this by following the normal steps for gathering intelligence:
- Collect three port reports and deliver them to the admiralty in Fallen London to unlock access to the Dark-Spectacled Admiral.
- Ask the Admiral if there’s anything in particular he needs to get a quest to obtain Strategic Intelligence from a foreign port. Collect two of these and combine them (right-click on the item in your hold and select Use, which will let you combine them with the addition of either a Memory of Distant Shores, a Zee-ztory or a Moves in the Great Game) to create a piece of Vital Intelligence. Turn this in to the Admiral to unlock access to the Voracious Diplomat.
- Hand in additional pieces of Vital Intelligence to the Voracious Diplomat instead of the Admiral to raise the Supremacy: The Dawn Machine value.
Sadly this only works reliably until the supremacy of the Dawn Machine reaches 2 (Gleaming), after which the chance of delivering intelligence raising this value drops to a very small chance. Luckily, there are three other actions you can take that will raise DM supremacy:
1) Deliver Sphinxstone to the Grand Geode – 1 point.
If you make deliveries of sphinxstone from the Salt Lions to Fallen London, after about the 5th delivery you should be approached by the Bright-Eyed Sequencer, who asks you to take the delivery to the Grand Geode instead. If you do so (ignoring Penstock’s pleas to give it to the Bazaar), you earn another point of Dawn Machine supremacy.
2) Trade away the Memento Mori at the Grand Geode – 3 points.
F the Irrepressible Cannoneer’s storyline to construct the Memento Mori and then give it to the Dawn Machine:
- If you he isn’t already aboard, you can recruit him in Fallen London or the Iron Republic.
- Speak to him by right-clicking his portrait in the Officers tab and invite him to dine with you (you will need 5 torpedo components).
- Bribe the factor on Demeaux Island with 200 echoes.
- Travel to Aestival and give up 5 supplies to get the Seal of the Red Science. Take it and a judgement’s egg (these can be bought from Irem, and maybe get a longbox while you’re there) to the Iron Republic to awaken it.
- Next, take the seal and 3 devilbone dice to the blacksmith at Station III to finish the weapon. If you aren’t able to access the blacksmith, you most likely need to deliver a Soothe & Cooper Longbox to the Austere Acolyte first. There’s a lot of options when you’re trying to deliver it but the result is ultimately the same.
- Sell the Memento Mori to the servants of the Dawn Machine at the Grand Geode for 3 points to Supremacy: The Dawn Machine.
When you reach 7 supremacy (Triumphant), an event will happen as soon as you’re out of the city screen. It will award you the codex.
A Travelling Light (+25 Mirrors)
“This is the story of the star. An exile from the High Wilderness took up a mask and a burden, and recorded its pilgrimage here below. There is no happy ending.”
WARNING: Completing these actions will end your current captain’s game.
Complete the main story in the Empire of Hands and take the zeppelin for yourself at the end.
- Compile A Comprehensive Port Report: Empire of Hands by docking at Port Stanton and exploring the four islands.
- Once you hand in the report in London, go to your lodgings to find an invitation to Benthic College, where you’ll meet the Delightful Adventuress. Accept her proposal to take her to the Empire of Hands.
- Once she sets up her dig site, you can steal one of the artifacts lying around to give as a gift to the Monkey Emperor on Sovereign Island. This will unlock access to the Wildweald court.
- Accept the commission to help the Pentecost apes complete their zeppelin. This requires delivering them large quantities of fuel, supplies and souls. Once you have donated them enough to raise your status with the court somewhat, you can speak to the Exquisite Seneschal to unlock more efficient ways of ferrying them fuel and supplies, and completing the story of the Delightful Adventuress can gain you a lot – or all – of the souls that are required, depending on your choices.
- Complete the zeppelin and choose to steal it. You won’t do so immediately because you need more favour with the Emperor. He will give you an item called the Monkey Emperor’s Wrath.
WARNING: Completing the next step will make the entirety of Fallen London inaccessible for your current captain. Only take this action when you are ready to take the zeppelin or terror levels will quickly become a serious problem.
- Return to Fallen London and give the Monkey Emperor’s Wrath to the Anarchists. They’ll use it to bring chaos to the city. You will be unable to return there but will earn the favour of the Monkey Emperor.
- Return once more to the Empire of Hands, steal the zeppelin and fly east.
