How to play epic games via steam link with controller

Overview

Play epic games on the steam link(or remote play) at 60fps with a controller.

Introduction

I’ve recently been trying to play Fortnite and Spellbreak using my steamlink but was extremely frustrated at the low FPS, and not having controller support. I began doing a lot of research into how I could trick Fortnite into using the steam overlay to no avail.

Getting Xoutput Ready

  • 1. Install Xoutput[github.com]
  • 2. Add Xoutput as a non-steam game

  • 3. Every time you want to play Fortnite(or any other non-steam game) launch Xoutput

Get Steam Link Ready

  • 1. In big picture mode, change the controller configuration to use generic controller buttons(I was able to go to the templates and choose one meant for this purpose)

  • – You will need a second controller or a mouse and keyboard so you can navigate your desktop –
  • 2. Make sure “Allow use of desktop configuration” on the Xoutput shortcut is checked

Configure Xoutput

Once you have launched Xoutput for the first time, there should be “xbox 360 controller” listed in the devices.

  • 1. Click edit on the xbox 360 controller
  • 2. Press “Configure All” at the bottom of the new window and follow the steps
  • 3. Once you have finished configuring, close the configure window and click “Save configuration” in the bottom right
  • 4. Now you can click “Start” and it should emulate an xbox 360 controller

Open a Game

Before you stream your games, you will need to change your game settings and set them to windowed or borderless windowed so it doesn’t stop your stream.

  • 1. With the keyboard(or second controller), use alt-tab and select steam
  • 2. You should now be streaming your whole desktop at 60FPS and not just a specific program
  • 3. Now just navigate to Epic and open your preferred game

Conclusion

I hope this guide helps people in need. I noticed this has been a problem since at least 2018 and I am glad I was able to find a solution.

If you have any problems, hopefully I can solve them.
