How to play Jurassic scenarios for Age of Empires II (2013)

How to play Jurassic scenarios

Overview

This is a short guide on how to play Jurassic scenarios, there was none so I made one :)Not finished yet.Comment or send me a message if you want something to be updated!

Basics

P3 Is the “hunter” all other players are the “survivors”.

Survivors

  • You need to survive for X time, usually is 2 hours.
  • You get 1 or 2 villagers.
  • Use the time where your villagers are moving or inmobile at the beggining to scout a good location, when you are there build an outpost, there can be enemy units hidden around if your base is far from the starting point. Also doing that you will research cartography.
  • Ships HP decreases over time.
  • You cannot produce any more villagers.
  • Resources are obtained through some buildings ( See buildings section ).
  • From the moment you are free, build a lumber camp to have some wood while you search for a place to start your base.
  • Walls and Towers will defend you from the dinosaurs.
  • Once you have a good defense going one you can produce some bombard cannons and siege onagers to defend or make an espace route.
  • Build a dock and a house as soon as posible to get a transport ship, just in case you have to abandon your base.
  • Put some archers in the towers to get more arrows per tower.
  • TEAM UP with at least another player, so you can wall and tower at the same time.
  • Monks can save your ass in some scenarios, they can convert ships if hunter gets them and some units, except wolfs.
  • In some scenarios you can only build docks in shallow waters.

Hunter

  • You will have to wait 4/5 minutes till you can move
  • You will get several types of units over time ( See units section )
  • Your goal is to kill all 7 villagers in X time, usually is 2 hours.
  • You can get spies after some time in some scenarios, from the start or never, deppends on the scenario and host.
  • Your units get strong over time, A LOT MORE STRONG.
  • Send some of your faster units or wolfs if you do not have them to scout the map, watch out for the crossings.
  • Good survivors will either build a massive base or hide in the best places.
  • Use ur units with brain, each one has one purpose.

Buildings

Economic buildings

They give you a supply of resources over time, the more you have, the more you get, maximum to obtain the best supply is 5 of each.

  • Mill

    It gives you food

  • Lumber camp

    It gives you wood

  • Mining camp

It gives you gold and stone.

Upgrades buildings
They give you some kind of upgrade when you build them or over time. (Best if you only have 1)

  • Outpost

Research Cartography. In some scenarios you will get Town watch after you build your second Outpost and Town patrol after your 3rd.

  • Barracks

    Research Fortified walls.

  • Archery range

Upgrades your towers. (just in some scenarios)

  • Blacksmith

    Increases Tower AP over time.

Other buildings

  • Market

Gives you a supply of gold. (Best if you only have 1)

All other buildings do not have any special effect on this scenario.

Units

Survivors

  • Villager: you only get 1 or 2 and you cannot produce more so take good care of them!
  • Archers: put them in towers.
  • Monks: convert some hunter units.
  • Bombard cannons: good defense.
  • Siege onager: create an escape route or defense.
  • Transport ship: useful for a scape.
  • Trebuchets: some people use them for defense, not worth of the resources I think.

Others: just good to scout before spies gets researched.

Hunter

  • Horses : great for scouting.
  • Hussars or similar : OP unit, use them to scout those bases without defense and get some early kills.
  • Wolfs: main unit, get a lot stronger over time.
  • Raptor: can be main unit in some maps, or a stronger version of wolfs.
  • Elephants: Good for siege and soaking up arrows, use them in combination of other units.
  • Rams: same as elephants.
  • Dragon / Monkey: super strong unit, take good care of him.
  • Chu ko nu / spiders : ranged units with 4 range.
  • Longbows : ranged units with a lot of range, use them to get those pesky bombard towers or monks before they convert you.
  • Demolition boats / Sharks / Any boat : patrol the water and the crossings.

Civs

Hunter

  • Celts
    Infantry move 15% faster.
  • Persians
  • Mongols
I guess it’s for “Cavalry Archers fire 20% faster”, In the versions where the main unit is a cavalry archer type of unit.

Survivors

  • Spanish
    Villagers construct buildings 30% faster.
  • Koreans
Villagers have +3 line of sight.
Guard Tower and Keep upgrades are free
Towers (except bombard towers) have +1 range in Castle Age, +2 in Imperial Age.
Fortifications (walls, towers, castles) built 25% faster. [Only in Forgotten Expansion]
  • Japanese
Lumber Camps, Mining Camps, and Mills are 50% cheaper.
Unique Technology: Yasama (Towers shoot extra arrows) [Only in Forgotten Expansion]
  • Saracens
Market trade cost is only 5%

Will be updated in the future.

In many scenarios a fast imperial allows you to get spies and build powerful siege, which can out-damage towers, especially as it is more mobile.

Tips from players

Originally posted by banak:

Barracks’ effect can vary from map to map, but always increases wall hp significantly. Almost always worth building before a third layer of wall. May as well be placed as part of a wall at the front, provided this doesn’t make you easier to find.

Build your barracks people!

Depending on the map and time taken to get through walls, having a boat on standby may not be necessary, and may give away position if enemy has boats. Fleeing by boat may be impossible if hunter has water control.

In some maps the hunter has boats, that means it’s better to not build next to water but try to have access to the water just in case. A good hunter will be waiting for the survivors transport ships at the crossings, but you can still cross, try to use other boats or units to get the attention of the enemy units, then go thorough as fast as you can. Do this when hunter is occupied attacking other players and cannot focus on that crossing.
