How to: use different languages for audio and subtitles for Divinity II: Developer's Cut

How to: use different languages for audio and subtitles

Overview

This is a rather short guide that will teach you how to have audio in one language and subtitles in another one.

Description

Have you ever wanted to play Divinity II with, say, german audio but with english subtitles? I did, but i couldn’t find any solutions. I found only questions. I also remember that the first version had a language and subtitle option ingame, but alas, it isn’t there anymore.

So, i did some more digging and solved it my way.

There are two methods into doing this.

First method step-by-step with images (foolproof)

The first method is to change the audio file with the one you want.

Note: Unfortunately in both cases you need to download the game at least twice(if it wasn’t downloaded at all) in order to obtain the needed files(or you could search for them on the web, but it’s faster to just redownload from steam)

Example: Lets say that you want German audio and English subtitles. This is what you do:

Note: If you already downloaded the game in the needed language than skip step 1.

1.First download the game in your preferred audio language.
1.1 To do that go to the steam “Library

1.2 Select the “Divinity II: Developer’s Cut

1.3 Right click on it and select “Properties

1.4 Select the “Language” tab

1.5 And select the language in which you wish to have the audio

2. After the game finished downloading you need to copy two files called “Dialogs.dv2” into a different folder

Note: Both files have the same name so be careful not to overwrite them when you copy them

2.1 To do this you need to go to your steam “Library“, select “Divinity II: Developer’s Cut“, right click and select “Properties” as done in the first step but you will now select “Local Files” and click on “Browse Local Files…

2.2 This will open the folder in which the game is installed.
Now enter the “Data” folder

2.3 Then enter the “Win32” folder

2.4 After that enter the “Packed” folder

2.5 In the end you will find yourself in a folder full of .ds2 files and three folders, but your only interest is in the “Episode_1_Extended” folder and the “Episode_2” folder

2.6 Inside both those folders there are three .ds2 files each. You need to copy “Dialogs.dv2” from both of them into separate folders, we will need them later.

Note: Copy the “Dialogs.dv2” from “Episode_1_Extended” into a newly made folder called “1” and the “Dialogs.dv2” from “Episode_2” into a newly made “2” folder so you know where they come from.

3. After doing that, change the game version to the preferred subtitle language, just as you did in step 1. This should start downloading the game in that language.

Note: In case the game does not start downloading, try launching the game so that a small window pops up and starts updating the game.

4. When it’s finished, copy and overwrite the two “Dialogs.dv2” files that you saved somewhere else into their respective game folders.

Note: If you did as in the notes, copy the “Dialogs.dv2” from the “1” folder into the “Episode_1_Extended” game folder and the “Dialogs.dv2” from the “2” folder into the “Episode_2” game folder

5.The final step is going into the “Data” folder and editing the “Languages.xml” file

5.1 Open the “Languages.xml” file with your preferred editor( i will be using Notepad++)

5.2 And edit the value of “Spoken” into your chosen audio language( i chose German)

After doing all that you can start the game and enjoy 😛

First method brief summary(No images, only quick info)

You first need to download the game in the preferred audio language. Copy the two “Dialogs.dv2” files from the “game folder/Data/Win32/Packed/Episode_1_Extended” folder and the other one from the “game folder/Data/Win32/Packed/Episode_2” folder into a backup folder.

After that change the game’s language to the preferred subtitle language via Steam and replace the “Dialogs.dv2” files with the ones from your backup folder. Also change the “Spoken” value from the game’s “Languages.xml“, that’s located in the data folder, to the audio language you changed.

Second method brief

Just like the previous method, but you swap the “DialogData.dv2” instead and change the “Text” value in the “Languages.xml” file into the preferred subtitle language.

F.A.Q.

Q: Can i do this some other way?
A: Maybe. I didn’t looked any further to find out.

Q: Why is your guide so horrible?
A: Ahh . . come on man . . i tried my best to make the guide idiot-friendly because i work with people and i know how thick headed they can be.

Q: Do you have something against turtles?
A: What? Who told you tha . .. I mean no, of course not! My best friend is a turtle.

Q: You should shave.
A: That’s not a question . . . but you are right. I should.
