Kyur’s Hotline Miami Guide

Overview

Allround guide covering achievements, masks, weapons, enemies, the puzzle and soundtrack.

0.0 – Welcome

Welcome to my Hotline Miami guide !

I wrote this guide to help new and seasoned hotliners alike, making it “allround” as possible. As such, some pieces of information have been blackened out as they may contain potential spoilers. To uncover these texts, simply hover your mouse cursor over the black text parts. Example: Exactly, like this !
Section “4.2 – Bosses” is the only exception here, since it would be ridicilous to censor such a big text block.

The guide is divided into different sections, making it easier to navigate (and avoid spoilers) with the handy guide index on the right side.

4.0 – Enemies

4.1 – Common enemies

4.1.1 – Mobster

  • Appearance: White man in white suit.
  • Found: All chapters (except 12, 13 and 19).
  • Weapons: Shotgun, Double Barrel Shotgun, Machine Gun, Baseball Bat, Golf Club, Lead Pipe, Knife.
  • Tactics: Most common and easy enemy throughout the game. Can be used as a human shield (see 3.2 – Firearms).

4.1.2 – Dog

  • Appearance: Rottweiler dog.
  • Found: Chapters 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14.
  • Weapons: Teeth, pounce attack.
  • Note: Immune to door slams. Immune to stunning thrown weapons. Immune to punches unless wearing the Tiger Mask (see 1.3). Wearing the Dog Mask (see 1.9) renders all dogs peaceful towards the player, though they still count as enemies to finish the level.
  • Tactics: Ambush dogs from a safe position like doorways, since they sprint very fast once they spotted the player’s character.

4.1.3 – Thug

  • Appearance: Big black man in black suit.
  • Found: Chapters 7, 10, 11, 14.
  • Weapons: Fists (one hit is lethal to player’s character).
  • Note: Immune to melee damage. Shooting a Thug makes him slowly bleed to death, every projectile increases blood loss.
  • Tactics: Shotguns work best against Thugs, since they 1) already close in for their melee attack and 2) shotguns deliver the highest amount of damage in a short period of time, killing Thugs instantly at close range.

4.1.4 – Waiter

  • Appearance: White man in waiter uniform.
  • Found: Chapter 6 – Clean Hit.
  • Weapons: Uzi.
  • Note: Immune to melee damage and thrown weapons.
  • Tactics: Waiters first don’t appear as enemies as they walk around carrying food plates. Once they spot the player’s character, they stop moving around, draw uzis and start firing. Since they are immune to melee and thrown weapons and they stand still in “guard mode”, it is best to strafe from cover to cover while firing a gun at them. Beware the high firerate of their uzis.

4.1.5 – Police officer

  • Appearance: White man in turquoise uniform, shirt and bandana.
  • Found: Chapter 3 – Assault.
  • Weapons : Baton, Shotgun, Machine Gun.
  • Tactics: No special tactics, as they behave like Mobsters.

4.1.6 – SWAT

  • Weapons : Machine Gun.
  • Tactics: Event enemies which are invulnerable to any attacks.

4.1.7 – Detectives

  • Appearance: Big white man in light brown clothing.
  • Found: Chapter 13 – Assault.
  • Weapons : Tazer.
  • Tactics: Act and behave the same way as Thugs (see 4.1.3).

4.2 – Bosses

4.2.1 – Thug

  • Appearance: Thug with slightly different clothing.
  • Found: Chapter 3 – Decadence.
  • Weapons : Fists (one hit is lethal to player’s character).
  • Tactics: Must be knocked down with shotgun fire three times before being able to execute this boss.

4.2.2 – Biker

  • Appearance: White man in purple vest and blue biker helmet.
  • Found: Chapter 7 – Neighbors.
  • Weapons : Cleavers which will be used as melee and thrown weapons.
  • Tactics: Pick up the golf club in the room (lower left corner) you encounter the Biker. Dodge his circling around you and avoid being caught in a corner since the Biker will jump-kill you in one hit once he is close enough. After dancing around for a few seconds, the Biker will lose patience and throw his cleaver. Dodge it, let the cleaver hit the wall and the Biker run to retrieve it. Once he shows his back to you, hit him with the gold club. Do this twice to finish him off.

4.2.3 – Van

  • Appearance: Black Van with Mobster looking through the roof window.
  • Found: Chapter 11 – Deadline.
  • Weapons : Wave of enemies, Mobster on roof throwing molotov cocktails.
  • Tactics: Once the van appearces, look for a safe place in the northern area where the thrown molotov cocktails can’t hit you. Pick off the appearing enemies one by one. After all appearing enemies are killed, the molotov-throwing Mobster on the van will surrender.

4.2.4 – Police Chief

  • Appearance: Big bald guy wearing a green uniform.
  • Found: Chapter 13 – Assault.
  • Weapons : Two uzis.
  • Tactics: The Police Chief uses two rapid-firing uzis and is surrounded by four policemen in a centered room with windows of the top floor of chapter 13. It is easiest to run from cover to cover while firing a shotgun at the small room since it is crowded with five enemies which only take one hit before going down.

4.2.5 – Panther

  • Appearance: Purple panther.
  • Found: Chapter 15 – Showdown.
  • Weapons : Claws, teeth, pounce attack.
  • Tactics: As soon as the two panthers spot the player’s character, they will carefully close in for a deadly melee attack and perform a pounce attack after a while. Pick up the trophy lying around in the lower right area. Get behind a water fountain for cover, as the panthers won’t approach any further when they don’t see the player’s character. Lure them in slowly by establishing and breaking the line of sight. Once they are close enough, use the trophy to kill them. Each panther requires two hits to be killed.
A more agressive (and chaotic) method is to walk backwards while facing them, dodging their attacks and continously attacking with the trophy, letting them run into your swinging weapon.

4.2.6 – Ninja Girl

  • Appearance: Blonde girl with ponytail and purple shirt .
  • Found: Chapter 15 – Showdown.
  • Weapons : Katana, throwing knives.
  • Tactics: The Ninja Girl will attack you once you killed the two panthers. Throw the trophy at her, knocking her down. Run towards her to perform an execution, which she will interrupt and crawl away. Finish her off with a second execution, letting her drop throwing knives which are required for the final boss fight.
It should be considered to let her crawl to a safe spot before performing the execution as her death will immediately tigger the final boss fight and spawn the throwing knives around her body.

4.2.7 – The Boss

  • Appearance: White man in green suit.
  • Found: Chapter 15 – Showdown.
  • Weapons : Two MP5s.
  • Tactics: The Boss will attack you once you killed Ninja Girl. To defeat The Boss, he must be hit with two of Ninja Girl’s throwing knives (three knives are dropped by her). He will drop one of his guns after the first hit. Take cover behind a water fountain, let him empty the magazines of his guns. As soon as he reloads quickly leave cover, throw a knife at him and run back into cover.

5.0 – Puzzle

There are 16 puzzle pieces scattered throughout the game, one per chapter. Puzzle pieces appear as small purple squares with a lighter purple pixel inside and are generally hard to spot. Wearing the Owl Mask (see 1.2) highlights puzzle pieces with a glowing effect, making them easier to spot. Puzzle pieces can only be found in “combat areas”, not in peaceful places like home or the video store.

The chapter selection screen shows if the puzzle piece has been found for that chapter.

Picking up a puzzle piece works the same way as picking up a weapon and adds a letter to the “Puzzle” minigame which accessed by the game menu. Each letter can be moved around and fits in the grid of 16 free spaces, but only one spot for each letter is right, locking it in place.

Collecting all puzzle pieces unlocks the “Eye For Details” achievement.

Solving the puzzle unlocks the “The Boss” achievement and makes it possible to enable the secret ending of the game by accessing the computer in Chapter 19 – Resolution, as the solved puzzle is the computer’s password.

Finishing the game without enabling the secret ending unlocks the “That’s It?” achievement.

Finishing the game with the secret ending enabled unlocks the “This Is It” achievement.

5.1 – Hints on the puzzle and solution

If you want small hints without giving away too much:

2. Think Bruce Springsteen
