The Great Learning

This Guide will illustrate to you an entire campaign at legendary difficulty with the Romans in Total War Rome 2. This series of video was also started on day one of the release of the game. As a result the gameplay may have constantly evolve as the game got patched.

The objective of this guide is to show how to time effectively beat the campaign at legendary. This mean that if a battle isn’t worth fighting it will be auto resolved in the campaign video. While the battles with be shown as a second video.

In this first post we list the most important key trick that we learned from and illustrated in the campaign so that peoples that only seek trick can learn from this.

Great Learnings So Far.

  • When you start a campaign destroy the usual initial enemy faction as fast as possible to prevent an opportunity for other faction to start a war with you.
  • Increase the number of armies as well as the number of troops in them on the first turn to create a balance of power in your favor against all other faction leading them to never declare war on you.
  • With Rome Focus of research that lead to legion technology as fast as possible.
  • Create a centrale region to build armies that you will send to war. You maintain a minimal army to suppress any revolt.
  • As you expend in all newly conquered regions occupy the town, then dismantle building and replace all by the most basic religious building, farms, Aqueduct, agora and Basic town (all lvl 1 stuff). Doing so will prevent any future rebelion and free your armies to go elsewhere instead to fighting rebels.
  • You do not need to developpe further then the basic building because more advance building cost food or create public disorder. Only developpe in very specific regions.
  • Do not bother making client states as they have a tendency to declare war on you later on or they bring you into wars your not necessarly ready for. If you really want to make client states make sure they do not share any region with you and that they are nowhere near you if possible.

Part 1 Secure Your Vital Space First

I will be publishing many episode in the next few days. Make sure to mark this Guide as one of your favorit if you are interested to follow this learning experience at Legendary Difficulty. If you want to follow me on Youtube you can actually subscribe to Attila16 and Attilagamingnetwork where I plan to release many videos of Rome Total War for your enjoyment.

As for the Content of this guide It will mostly be under the form of videos, so you will have to watch and learn. At the same time I will also resume in a very short and effective words the essentially idea and concept I was searching for while recording the videos.

You can see the first 40 min of my campaign in those two videos here. The first one contain exclusively campaign element of the game while the second one show the first battle I personally fight.

Very early on with the Roman you need to make sure to crush your nearby enemies for two reason. If you don’t your potential enemies may see it as a proper moment to take advantage of the situation and secondly you need to be at peace to make other faction be interested in establishing diplomatic relation with you.

When you Attack a City without any wall make sure that you attack the center as fast a possible to prevent the enemies reinforcement from being of any help. It’s also important to anticipate any road block on the way that the enemies may establish.

Part 2 Carthage Must Be Destroyed

The Part 2 show how to quickly destroy your natural enemy Carthage. It feature a very lenghty 1h 25 of campaign before the following battle, a second video to allow peoples that only like battles to enjoy that part without havint to watch the campaign. While many peoples are eager to see more battle played personally, Auto resolving allow us to quickly advance into the campaign progression and reach the state where many faction have consolidated their forces into larger army and where the battles and strategy used in them will be much more meaningfull.

The following battle is an exemple of a siege I did where I didn’t managed to destroy the door and for some reason my troops never showed capacity to destroy those doors much. So I guess it’s was a defeat but I learned how it work… =)

Part 3 Securing The Region from Carthage’s Allies

In this part I’m drag toward the West by Nova Carthage that is hostile to me as an ally of the now destroyed carthage faction. My objective is mostly to consolidate my position in the captured.

All this leaded to the defense of one of my town where the AI did show quite a bit of none sense allowing me to have a victory against a way larger army.

This recording was made prior to the first patch of the game so hopefully now all the issu we saw in those first six episode have been resolved or will be resolved.

Part 4 Consolidation Of The Roman Position In Africa

In this part I’m showing how to stabilize then empire in north africa by chasing down the remaining enemies arround and I priorities the destruction of Nova Carthago.

This all lead to this battle where I simply rush into the town and capture the town before a huge army from the see has any chance of helping out. I would have prefered to fight it but the lag didn’t made it enjoyable for me so I just went for the objective.

Part 5 Securing New Conquest in Africa

At this point after the initial conquest of a small part of africa, now it’s all about securing it and continuing the campaign against Carthage allies.

Since I negletect a little Carthage region in terms of public order that leaded to this very challenging battle against rebel with a much stronger army then my own.

The main thing to learn from this battle is that against a strong army, dividing them is key to victory and javeling are very nice when it comes to defeating elephants.

Part 6 Holding on to Ibossim

In this part I’m being attacked by Carthage allies so I’m force to do something about it. So I’m attacking them leading to the following battle

This following battle where I quickly rout the enemy army in a nice little forest fight as well as the enemy fleet reinforcements in the region of Ibossim
