Overview
in this guide I will describe how to make some good steam backgrounds for your portal games.
introduction
hello in this guide I will show you how to make custom, good looking, steam backgrounds for portal and its multiple mods.
in this guide I will go over:
1. how to use the noclip console command
2. how to edit your portal screenshots with Paintnet[www.getpaint.net]
3. how to replace the steam portal background
using the noclip console command
for those of you hwo don’t know the developer console is a part of portals pause menu and you can use it to do multiple things like fly through walls, choose a level, and be immune to turrets and other enemies + hazards.
to enable the developer console simply go into the options menu, go to keyboard, then advanced, and check the enable developer console box now you can press the key you have assigned(defualt is `)
to use the noclip command(which allows you to fly through walls) you need to go into the developer console and type sv_cheats 1 then type noclip or you can bind the two commands like this(copy and paste the following in the console if you want) bind n “sv_cheats 1; noclip”
taking the screenshot
load up a level and go use noclip to fly over to a corner of a level then take a screenshot this is the screenshot I took.
editing the screenshot and replacing the background
what you want to do is go into paint and open the image. then you want to go to effects, blurs, unfocus and keep the radius at 5. after that make some text with the name of the game and put it in the middle, maybe add some layers to the image to make it look better this is an example of what it should look like.
after that you will want to go to portal on steam right click the background then click set custom background and choose the image you made then your done.
