Note:
As long as the NPC worker assigns from the first time recruited and not being removed or re-assign, ever.
It will take about 5 years to level up. Not all NPC workers will level up in one go.
Still, assign it as the highest skill as their job.

Lumberjack to provide constant wood.
Farmer to provide food ingredient.
Hunter to provide meat or Fisher to provide fish meat.
Innkeeper to provide cooked food for inhabitant.
You can always cook yourself, however, to have it, inhabitant, to cook for you while you free yourself to do something else is something less to worry about when you are coming home.
