Meta Guide

Disclaimer: May be somewhat out of date.

Several people asked me to describe the current Russian meta, so here it is.

1. Extremely low rates (up to 1500s).

Players don’t yet know how to last hit, how to hold the lane with melee characters, how to jungle and when to gank. They just spawn skills and auto attack until them or their enemy will die. The game is totally random.

Ranged AOE and pet controllers rock here, most people on that rates think they are op. May be your team will also welcome you if you have a tanky hero, may be not.

2. Low rates (1600s to 1700s)

The pre-match hero selection is available from here. Players start to care about jungle, now you will surely have a jungler, a tank and possibly even a support class in your team. They also have enough talents to start doing builds they got from wiki. The teamplay level is still very low, individual skill matters greatly.

Any character is good enough here as long as your individual skill is ok. Don’t expect people to utilize combos and smart ganks though, they don’t know your character as well as you already do.

3. Average rates (1800s to 1900s)

The teams here are pretty standart – carry, two other laners, jungler and a minigame player (support, tank or assassin type). People start to care about roles and combos and will use simple combos every time they need to. The builds are decent, you will be asked what build do you have (to ensure your role) at the pre-match window.

You should choose your role wisely. If you feel skilled enough, choose a jungler or support (the hardest role), if not any strong laner will do. People mostly stick to heroes which can do good by themselves (not too squshy, not too supportive, can deal enough damage) because they still cannot fully utilize the teammates help.

Best laners here: Lightning Master (int), Mage (int), Fay, Frog, Archer, Inventor(both int or str)/Artiste(str), Cryo (hp), Woodsman (int), Fox (int).

Best junglers here: Piper, Fang, Blade Master.

Best support: Healer

Best tank: Any

Most random players can’t get higher than this. Time to find yourself a constant team and/or to join a clan.

4. High rates (2000s to 2200s)

Teams and clans are clashing here. You can even meet an experimental team from the top clan who are trying an unusual combo of heroes. The number of random players is low here and almost all of them are more skilled than you, so be careful and squash them with a great teamplay. You will already have a great build and several good friends to party with in a voice chat.

People tend to use pretty similar hero selections here – the ones which have already been tested and approved by top teams. At every single moment of time between the patches there are about 10-12 heroes which are a bit more powerful than others, so expect to see many of current “ops” at this rates. Almost all builds are pretty standart here too, not including the experimental builds from top players.

Best laners here: Lightning Master (int), Archer, inventor (int or str)/Artiste (str), Wanderer, Fay, Frog, HighLander, Vampire, Fox (any).

Best junglers: Piper, Jaeger, Inventor (str).

Best support: Any

Best tank: Wanderer, Maiden

5. Top rates (2200+)

The Olympus, reserved for top guilds and tournament players. Has its own insanely variable meta which is different from 2200-. That’s the only place where you can see a solo laning Shadow or jungling Eraser for the first time in your life. You can also see a double-jungler team here, which is HIGHLY unusual on 2200-. There are no “solo builds” anymore, here people speak about builds for the whole team (Example: I won’t pick that AOE str talent for my str character because the other team member already has it in his build and they don’t stack). Several heroes you can rarely meet on 2200- can shine brightly here, being able to uncover their full potential.

Best laner: the one who combos with other 4.

Best jungler: the one who combos with other 4.

Best whatever: the one who combos with other 4.
