Overview
A highly specific guide to getting the Monkey Blood quest item and the Origins achievement.
Overview
This is an incredibly simple guide for getting the Monkey Blood quest item, one of the three items needed for the Good Ending, in hopes that it can help someone else after the trials I went through to get it. No screenshots, videos or things like that, but hopefully all the detail you’ll need to succeed – without spoilers.
I’ve split the guide up into 3 stages to simplify things:
– Stage 1 – Events
– Stage 2 – Fort
– Stage 3 – Questline
Here are the things you need to complete the quest, and to keep in mind:
- Other Factions
- Mall/Mega Mall – must have loot, must be unclaimed
- Cricket bat
- Motel – must have loot, must be unclaimed
- A City Hall – to Meet With other factions
- A survivor you’re willing to sacrifice
- Five Schools
- City – Cannot be Snoqualmie (tutorial), Hope, Abbotsford or Vancouver (all end game). You must complete this quest before reaching Abbotsford.
- Signpost Technology
The quest has to be completed in one(1) city, progress doesn’t carry over. However, it can be restarted in the next city if you have problems, with no penalty (except losing the cricket bat).
There are 2 other cities – Wenatchee and Penticton – that give you vital quest rewards for the good ending. The Monkey Blood quest CAN be completed alongside them.
- Save often! Especially save at the beginning of the city you’re about to try to complete this in, and especially save before selling your cricket bat, so that you don’t need to re-acquire one if things go wrong.
- Though you can research it at any time, It’s best to save researching “Signposts” until after all 4 events, Stage 1, are done, to give you the most time to complete them.
- I recommend doing this quest in Kelowna, as it’s one of the biggest cities in the game with the best chances for the buildings you need, and late in the game to give you plenty of time to get the cricket bat. It also has many factions to Meet With, to increase the chance of getting the Book Donation event.
- When trying to put an engineer in front of a mob, save before doing so, so that if it goes on a different path you can reload and place the engineer there instead.
- To get the cricket bat, there are 3 methods:
- Scavenge – has a rare chance to be found as loot; the Scavenge Everything policy and having high level scavengers will increase the chance, though it’s still rare.
- Buy it – very rare chance that other factions/Gustav may sell it.
- Event – there is an event that can give you a cricket bat, if you choose the right option; you need to have a reclaimed 8-12 mart in your fort, and when 2 guys show up asking for a Cornetto, choose that option. Seems to have a 50/50 chance to trigger in each city. Make sure your builders don’t have the “Decorator” perk as they may remove the 8-12 Mart, or alternatively have multiple if you can.
When you have the cricket bat, assign it to a survivor that you’ll bring with you to the next city, and make sure you don’t lose it to raids or random events!
- Alternatively, you can use the Debug mode to give yourself a cricket bat using the “Get Equip” option and typing in “cricketbat”, if you feel like being a cheater.
- Scout the city as fast as possible to make sure it contains the buildings you need, to save yourself wasted time, as not all cities spawn both.
- Alternatively, you can also use the debug mode to reveal the entire city using “Show All”
- The Mall/Mega Mall and Motel must never be reclaimed, including by other factions. If necessary, go to war and destroy other factions fort tiles that border the quest buildings, to prevent them being reclaimed by them.
- You can build around the quest buildings, lay trays, and kill zombies in them without affecting the quest; just make sure not to loot them until ready.
Stage 1 – Events
There are 4 different events that you need to do in this stage. Only 2 are required to trigger the second stage, but all 4 MUST be done before the end of stage 2, or stage 3 WILL NOT trigger.
Another important thing to note; the first two can be done any time, but the second two both start a 40 day timer* to complete the quest inside of, so they’re best saved for last.
- 1 – Book Donation: after having 5 schools in your fort, a new encounter will be unlocked with other factions when choosing “Meet with…” on them. They will offer you books for your many schools, and out of the options you need to choose Fiction.
- 2 – Newspaper: when a zombie mob (the one that moves toward your fort) is spawned, place an Engineer survivor (and preferably a soldier too) in their path so that they are forced back to base. When this happens, an event occurs to read a newspaper. Choose to read it, there are no bad repercussions.
- 3 – Gustav: you simply have to sell a cricket bat to Gustav, the difficulty is in getting one (explained before)
- 4 – Mall Scavenging: scavenge at a Mall or Mega Mall (an Allmart does not work*) to loot. This should be done with a level 10 scavenger (either naturally or with equipment), doing so gives you an event. Choose “Pet Store”. The “Scavenge Everything” policy may help*.
After completing all 4 of these, research the “Signpost” technology. Stage 2 should then trigger.
*This is according to information found on Steam discussion and the wiki, but I have yet to confirm myself.
Stage 2 – Fort
Once you’ve completed the 4 prior events and researched the “Signposts” technology, a survivor arrives: you should recognise them by their unique appearance.
- At this point, sacrifice a survivor by sending someone to do a dangerous (red) mission. They should become injured.
– The best way to injure a survivor is to send them Hunting in a field, far from your fort, with low defence. They will stay there until injured.
– Researching the “Paramedic Training” and “Doctor Training” before hand will make them more likely to be injured as opposed to killed outright, but I never had a problem with this. - After being injured, an event will occur which kills the survivor.
– You can have no hospitals to make their injury last longer, and make the event more likely to trigger, but you can always just re-injure the survivor if necessary. - Eventually after this, another event will occur where a random survivor becomes injured. There are 2 options, one needing a high level Leader, but both result in the same thing. Once this event has occurred, Stage 3 is ready to go.
Stage 3 – Questline
After the quest survivor has left your fort, Stage 3 begins.
- 1 – Start by scavenging the motel you’ve been saving. You should get an event. After going through the options, you’ll be directed to a building that’s marked by a mission marker.
– If no unclaimed copy of this building exists, the map spawns one, so no need to panic if they’re all claimed.
– If you don’t get an event here, the quest has missed something and you need to start over.
– (I don’t know if this needs a high level scavenger, but use a level 10 to be safe) - 2 – Go to the building, complete this event. All options lead to the same outcome, but have different text to read (choose “Coma” last if you want to read them all). You’ll be directed to another building, guided by a mission marker.
– Again, if this specific building doesn’t exist unclaimed on the map, one will be spawned. - 3 – Go to the final building, go through the options (all lead to the same outcome) and you should now have the Monkey Blood.
At this point, your quest this done. Congratulations, and enjoy the game!
