Overview
A nice little guide for anyone who is just getting into Nuclear Throne or people that just can’t get a good grip on the game.
Introduction
DISCLAIMER: DONT BOTHER READING THIS SECTION IF YOU’RE NOT NEW TO THE GAME. When you launch Nuclear Throne you’ll probably just hit start game and then hit normal mode. You’ll see that there are 12 characters and only 2 out of 12 of them are unlocked from the beginning: Fish and Crystal. Fish is a good character to start with because you can use his roll ability to dodge bullets and projectiles, and Fish gets more ammo so it’ll be good for not running out of ammo. The reason I don’t think Crystal is a good starting character is because you start to rely more and more on your shield, and once you play as any other character you’ll end up realizing that you can’t play without Crystal’s shield.
Know your enemy
Play the game for at least 30 to 40 hours so that you can be familiar with all the enemies. Get to know the general amount of HP that the enemy has and how much damage it’s projectiles do and how much contact damage it does. This is really helpful because you can prioritize specific enemies like golden tanks, or snipers camping behind Big Dog.
Prioritizing Damage
Sometimes there are moments in the game when you’re trapped and there’s just no way out other then tanking through the damage. But if you read the section before this in this guide, then you’ll know about knowing your enemy. This especially comes in handy when you know how much damage each enemy deals. When you’re in a tough spot without any way of getting out scott-free, then you need to make a compromise in how much damage you take. For instance, if you just killed Little Hunter but you’re trying to avoid his death explosion and at the same time you don’t wanna get hurt by the robo wolves or the tanks, just tank through the 3 damage bullets that the robo wolf is shooting at you and avoid Little Hunter’s explosion. Keep in mind that if you have really low health and you’re in a situation like this, you might as well be dead because there’s not too high of a chance of getting out of there alive.
Don’t Panic
This game is FILLED with a bunch of really annoying and frustrating enemies. Especially the ones that run around dodging all your gunfire and once they get up close to you they’ve probably already killed you (I’m looking at you assassins). But when enemies like crystal spiders, assassins, freaks or rats are up close to you, try not to go into panic mode. The more you panic the more you’ll try to jerk your aim onto the enemy and get killed. Another thing that’ll help deal with these kinds of enemies are melee weapons (not including the screwdriver) or other weapons with low accuracy. But remember, as long as you don’t panic when you’re in a tight spot, you’ll make it out alive.
More Enemies
There’s only one way to play the game with more enemies: using crown of blood. Normally I wouldn’t consider save editing to be fair, but that’s only if you give yourself a guitar as YV or something, but I think it’s ok to use it to unlock crown of blood for your characters in nuclear throne so that you’re better at the game. Why does it help you get better you ask? Because when you’ve got a bunch of enemies on screen, of course it’s gonna be harder. But once you get the hang of using crown of blood, playing without it will seem like a walk in the park. Plus you get your ultra mutation a lot earlier and that’s always nice.
PRACTICE
Practice, practice, practice, practice, oh yea, and I almost forgot, practice. But seriously, you don’t all of a sudden get magical powers bestowed upon you that make you better at the game. You need to play the game for a while until you’re confident that you’re good at the game.
Random Helpful Facts
Fact #1: You can go down to the bottom of the stage in 7-3 even with the giant portal pulling you in as any character, just cling to the left wall and walk downward until you can walk at a normal speed, just don’t walk to the right or you’re going flying back to the portal. This can be used to make sure that any weapons that were left on the bottom can go through the portal.
Fact #2: Going to the hidden jungle area in 5-1 gives you an extra mutation wether or not you leveled up in that area, if it gives you the option to take the last wish mutation again, that means that you’ll be able to go to the jungle in 5-1 L1 and you can get another free mutation. So if you do this playing as melting with crown of destiny and you choose meltings ultra, “Detatchment”, you’ll have a total of 14 mutations instead of 8.
Fact #3: Switching your primary weapon with a weapon on the ground will reset those weapons’ reload time. So if you just keep swapping your weapon with the one on the ground and start spamming MOUSE1, then you can spam weapons that normally have a slow reload time like a super plasma cannon, or super flak cannon.
Conclusion
Hopefully this guide has taught you new techniques and you’re now a skilled player in Nuclear Throne. This is the first guide that I’ve made so some feedback would be helpful.
