Oblivion Beginner's Tips for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Oblivion Beginner’s Tips

Overview

Hello, I am trying to make a oblivion tips page, for people who have only just started the game, so I would be glad if any of you could post your tips and secrets below, I will test them to see if they are true/ if they work, and then I will update the guide with your tip and give you credit. Thanks.Note: I don’t check this page very often so it may take a while to update tips

Must-Know Tips

1.) You drop items by shift-clicking said item.

2.) This is a problem many are aware of, you CANNOT sprint in oblivion.

3.) Skill progression is different from Skyrim, when your skill reaches a certain level (e.g marksman) it gives you a “perk” automatically

4.) You can set hotkeys by going in your inventory and seleting an item or spell while holding a number key, this will bind the item or spell to that number.

5.) To actually “win” the speechcraft minigame all you need to do is hover over one of the four choices and look at the NPC’s face, if he looks angry while you’re hovering over it it will decrease his opinion of you if you select it, if he looks happy with the option you’re hovering over it select it to increase his opinion of you.

Combat Tips

1.) Ghosts can only take damage from magic, enchanted weapons, and a few certain weapons such as silver weapons and daedric weapons.

2.) Keep your weapons and armour in good condition, the lower the condition is, the less damage it deals/stops. You can pay armourers and shop vendors to repair gear for you or you can use a repair hammer and repair items manually. The effectiveness of using a repair hammer is judged by the level of the armourer skill (enchanted items can only be repaired with an armourer skill of 50).

General Tips

1.) If you ask a NPC something, and the question is still in white when they are finished talking, they are lying to you. They either don’t trust you enough, or you have not met the requirements.

2.) Beggars are very helpful in the game if you want to find out information.

3.) Playing the game on the hardest difficulty is not recommended because enemies have 6x health and 6x damage, while you’re damage is divided by 6. Remember, you can lower the difficulty in the options.

4.) If you keep dying while trying to close a oblivion gate, you can simply just run past all the enemies and take the sigil stone, you might miss out on loot, but it saves alot of time.

5.) Most shops open at 8 AM, and close at around 10 PM. Inns are always open.

6.) Be careful who you kill, especially in the shivering isles, they could be important to a quest.

7.) If you jump everywhere you go, your acrobatics skill will increase quickly (but this uses up a lot of stamina), the same goes for sneaking but requires no stamina.

8.)To get your sneak skill up easily, go to someones house who is sleeping, go into sneak mode, and run continuously into a wall outside their room.

9.) Have a storage space somewhere you visit often to drop off all your items, i recommend the imperial waterfront.

10.) You may have heard of chameleon enchants. These do not make you completely invisible, but make you less likely to be seen, and unlike invisibility, it does not wear off when you interact with something. If you reach 100% chameleon, you stay invisible and can do amazing things like steal without having it wear off. If you enchant each piece of gear (boots, greaves, chestplate, gloves, and helmet) with 20 percent chameleon to equal 100% nothing can see or detect you, and you can’t be hit by opponents.

11.) Remember that as a member of the thieves guild you can pay off any bounties or fines for half the price without losing any stolen goods by talking to Armand Christophe in the Imperial Waterfront or S’krivva in Bravil.

12.) Much like in Skyrim, altars will usually cure most diseases

13.) NPCs will like you less if you talk to them with your weapon drawn

14.) Save right before you exit the sewers at the beginning of the game and don’t save over that file. This way, if you want to make a new character, you can do it quickly instead of going through the starter dungeon again.

Item Tips

1.) Umbra, located just East of the Clavicus Vile Shrine is a dungeon named “Vindasel” go there and slay “Umbra” to obtain her ebony armor, and sword, aslo named “Umbra”, which has high damage and soul trap for 120 seconds on strike. The sword is also linked to the “Clavicus Vile’s Shrine” quest but the quest is not a requirement for obtaining the sword.

2.) Azura’s Star, you can retrieve this item from Azura’s shrine by completing the quest Azura assigns to you when placing an offering of glowdust on her shrine at 6 AM or so, to obtain glowdust to start this quest you must slay the “wisp o’ willo” with a silver sword, then beat the quest after talking to Azura, and she will reward you with “Azura’s Star”, infinite use soul gem with high capacity.

DLC Tips

1.) Don’t do Knights of the Nine if your character is in or is thinking of joining the Dark Brotherhood, makes it harder to start and makes it impossible to use the relics.

2.) Shivering Isles gives you the ability to make armour and weapons. Madness Ore for heavy armour, Amber for light and you can find “Matrices” (Singular: Matrix) that can be used to make already enchanted gear (has to be made at the city in Shivering Isles by the blacksmiths).
