Oblivion Troubleshoot Guide

Overview

Guide that will help you get your game running and fix issues you have with it.

Troubleshoot Guide

There are a lot diffrent ways that might fix your problems.
So I am summarizing them in this Thread for easier access.
I doubt you read through dozens of pages so I hope this is helpful.

Verifying the Game-Cache

Right-Click Oblivion in your steam list, select properties, go to local files tab. Press verify integrity of game cache. Wait till this has run through and downloaded the missing files.

Use this if not even the launcher appears or if you get “game not available” messages.

Restart Steam

It might be possible that steam has not downloaded all files yet.
To be save restart your PC and restart Steam at least once.

Use this if you just bought Oblivion

Launching the game through OblivionLauncher.exe

It will show the launch menu twice. Press play twice.
The launcher is at steam/steamapps/common/oblivion/oblivionlauncher.exe

Use this is nothing happens at all when you start oblivion.

Fixing Window Mode

Install OneTweak[www.nexusmods.com]

Use this if you crash or have issues alt tabbing.

Fixing the mod list

Go download Wyre Bash[www.nexusmods.com], this fixes your mod list.
Because if you deleted a mod before disabling it then Oblivion still trys to load it and therefor crashes.

Use this is you get a black screen then a crash and you used mods before.

Disabling Mods

One of your installed mods can also cause the game to crash.
Some mods are known for breaking the game for a lot users. So please be careful. I also recommend using Wyre Bash[www.nexusmods.com] once again.

Use when experiencing crashes at startup or when you crash ingame when you do a certain thing.

Getting rid of your Old Oblivion install

Before you install Oblivion via steam be sure to install your old Oblivion setup first. Part of this is deleting the folder that is located here. c:/users/<username>/my documents/my games/oblivion You may keep the saves folder tho. You can still do this after you installed oblivion via steam. However it is not garanteed that it will work.

Use this if you had a non steam Oblivion installed before.

Editing oblivion.ini

Go to the folder c:/users/<username>/my documents/my games/oblivion and open up oblivion.ini search for one of these lines. bSoundEnabled=1, bMusicEnabled=1 or bUseJoystick=1 change the values to 0 (zero) and save it. This happens to fix the game for some people but they might endup without any sound. So please update your sound drivers.

Use this if you crash when pressing “new game”

Enabling Oblivion.esm

At the launcher press data files and make sure Oblivion.esm is ticked. Then press play.

Use this if you get a black screen along with an errormessage.

Disable ingame steamcommunity

Right-click on Oblivion in steam. Select general tab. Untick “Enable Steam Community Ingame”

Use this if everything failed.

Play with the grafic settings or restore them to default

Problems are often caused by VSync or bloom and else. Just untick the things you think that might cause problems. Another thing you can do is update your grafic card drivers.

Use this if you have grafic problems or massive lags.

Update your drivers

Update your grafic card drivers, sound drivers, directX, .net framework, visual c++. This never hurts!

Use this if everything else fails.

Installing FastExit

Install OBSE[obse.silverlock.org].
Then install the fast exit plugin[www.nexusmods.com]. It fixes the oblivion shutdown.

Use this if Oblivion crashes when you try to exit it.

Using the Crash Prevention plugin

Install OBSE[obse.silverlock.org].
Then install New Vegas Anti Crash[www.nexusmods.com]. This fixes a lot random crashes.

Use this if you get crashes while playing normally

Fixing Stutters

Install OBSE[obse.silverlock.org].
Then install Oblivion Stutter Remover[www.nexusmods.com]. This fixes most stutters.

Use this if you experience a lot stutters while playing.

Fixing problems with DirectShow Filters.

Install CODEC Reset Utility[codecpack.co]. Using this you should be able to solve the problem.

Use this if you have crashes when certain sounds play.

Improving performance for older PCs

Give OLDblivion[www.nexusmods.com] a try.

Use this if you know that your PC is rather bad and you have low FPS.

Generally improving performance

Install OBSE[obse.silverlock.org].
Then install Streamline[www.nexusmods.com]. This dynamically sets the item and world view distance and it makes timed autosaves. Using this you will have better FPS at a rather minimal visual loss.

Use this to boost your FPS. Very recommended if using Bananasplits Better cities or Unique Landscapes.

Using more than 4GB ram

Install the 4GB Patcher[www.nexusmods.com]

Use this if your PC has 4GB or more RAM.

Run the game Windowed

Set the game to run in a window via the launcher options.
There is an alternative solution if you are using an nvidia grafic-card
Go to Nvidia control Panel> Manage 3D settings > Program Settings > Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion > Multi-Display/Mixed-GPU acceleration. Set this to Single display performance mode.
If all this fails unplug all additional monitors and restart the pc before starting oblivion..

Use this if you are having multiple displays.

Oh and don’t forget to sort your modlist using BOSS[boss-developers.github.io]

Good luck!
