Overview
A detailed guide to everything in Subnautica. From food to crafting, base building and much much more!
Basic Controls and Startup
When first starting the game you have three different options.
Freedom, survival and hardcore.
Freedom consists of no Calorie loss or H2O loss. Survival is just the normal standard survival with calorie loss and H2O loss. Hardcore is survival but with only 1 life, you get no second chances.
Basic Controls:
WASD: For moving.
Left click: To collect items.
Right click: To activate and use items.
Space/C: To ascend, descend and jump.
1 2 3 4 5: Hotbar tools.
Tab: To open inventory/PDA.
F: Holster item
If anything gets stuck in a ceiling fan its not my fault. I swear.
Starting off
So you have just spawned in this crazy new world, so many thing to do and you don’t know where to start. Well i’ll help you out there my friendo.
First things first (I’m the realest), you must find your escaped pod located somewhere around your spawning area. If you need help finding it, a white ring will be pulsating from the escape pod. You will spawn in the Safe Shallows. This is mostly filled with peaceful creatures.
To enter the escape pod you must swim underneath to the blue port hole and click LMB (Left Mouse Buttom) to enter.
Enter your escape pod and locate the fabricator inside. To enter the menu press LMB on the fabricator.
At this point in the guide I realised I was dying of hunger. R.I.P. After eating a ♥♥♥♥♥ tonne of shrooms being super high and all, I died because I forgot my oxygen tanks. Sooooo, one of the first things you need to create is flippers and oxygen tanks. You will notice having no tanks makes the distance you can swim very limited.
Crafting Items
The first two items you might want to consider making are some Oxygen tanks and Fins. The Fins and Oxygen tank option are in the equipment section in the Fabricator. Oxygen tanks requite 2 metal and Fins require 2 silicone, silicone is made from 3 sand which can be collected almost anywhere from the sea bed as well as metal. Fins speed your swimming up but cannot be stacked whilst Oxygen tanks raise the limit of oxygen by 30 seconds and can be stacked.
Next I recommend making a knife to ward off evil creatures and collecting items you need to create amazing items. To make a knife you need to enter the tools menu from the fabricator whilst carrying 2 metal pieces and 1 emery. Emery is a brownish purpley looking ore you collect from breaking limestone rocks. Limestone seems to spawn mostly on cliff faces but can be found in other places too.
If you have been collecting a lot and the storage space in the escape pod is nearing full/is full you will want to create a small storage cube! This costs 3 metal to create in the equipment section and is meant to be placed in the water although I placed it inside the escape pod. Word of warning though it does take up quite a bit of room. When I placed it in my Cyclops it didn’t seem to move with it but you can create lockers for the Cyclops later on.
The last item of basic crafting shall be the seaglide. This item is the bessstttt when you don’t have your submarines yet. Even once you have your submarines this will be your best friend through thick and thin. The seaglide requires 1 metal, 1 battery and 1 silicone. A battery is made from 1 zinc and 1 carbon. Zinc can be collected from the limestone. Limestone has a chance of dropping Copper, zinc and emery. Zinc is a white colour rock. Carbon can be made with 3 mushrooms found at the seabed or buy attacking (what I believe to be called) a Stalker.
Food and Water
When you start getting the need for food and water you’ll arrive at this section of the guide. One of the easiest food items to collect is mushrooms, they’re everywhere! The down side is that… they only restore +2 hunger per mushroom. You’ll soon realise that this will not suffice when traveling or further into the game. Water is also an issue. To make the basic kind of water, called Filtered Water, you need 1 membrane. This water restores +10 H2O per bottle. You find membrane by attacking Bladder fish/Airsack Fish (both the same fish but name changed).
More advanced food is catching fish and collecting salt to cook with. Each fish gives a different value of H2O and Calories. Salt can be found mostly on cliffs further than the Safe Shallows.
You can also make Disinfected Water created with bleach. Bleach requires 1 calcium and 1 salt. Calcium can be made with 1 coral chunk, coral can be a bit harder to find if you don’t know where to look, but i recommend going to the Safe Shallows. The Safe Shallows seems to have more coral than anywhere else; It can be collected from coral tubes or coral on the sea bed.
Advanced Building
To start creating vehicles and having the ability to travel to more dangerous places, you need a Constructor. To create a Constructor you need: 3 Metal, 2 Glass and 1 Battery. To release your constructor, swim to the surface and click RMB. To use click LMB to climb up and LMB again to open the menu. If you want to pick up the constructor, look at the bottom whilst standing on it and click LMB.
The first vehicle you want to make is a Seamoth. Its a rather small submarine and it resembles well… a moth. Its super useful for getting around places at a fast speed, while being nimble and moving through small spaces. The recipe requires: 3 Metal, 2 Glass, 1 Battery and 1 Copper. Glass is made with Sand and Quartz. Quartz can be found in the area with Green Vines. Once you have all these item go ahead and create your new submarine!
Work In Progress!
My save game will not load since the last update, i’m working on it. It just gets an error and wont load. :/ This Guide is about half done, if you see anything that needs adding/ correcting feel free to tell me or add me!
