Overview
A tutorial to how to change the Field of View, Remove Motion Blur, Uncap Fps, Fix Stuttering, get Better Textures, get Antialiasing, Reduce Grain Filter and change Shadow Resolution of OUTLAST.
FIRST OF ALL!!
HELLO
My Name is Daniel And I’m going to help you improving your Outlast Game.
First you need to Locate this Folder, That is the one that contains all the files we are going to mod.
______________________
โถ When you are LOOKING FOR a Command Try not to search the entire command, for example: MotionBlur=True, just MotionBlur= (This will Avoid any issue if you don’t find the command)
โถ First of all make sure you make a backup of all the files (.ini) (just copy all of them into another folder).
โถ MAKE SURE YOU Check the box read only in all the files.
(If you don’t have a backup and sadly your game does not start up, just put the default commands and/or you can try to delete those .ini files (I think the game will generate other ones).
๐
โถ If you use most of this tweaks, the game will look better.

Sorry if my English is not perfect.
– Thank you CalinTM and other users for giving me some commands.

1# How to Change FOV
In order to Change the FOV, you have to Go to “OLGame.ini“, open it, look for “DefaultFOV=” and “RunningFOV=”, defaultfov is by default at 90 but is not the 90 that all we now, it is like 65, so to get like 90 you have to write:
DefaultFOV=110.0
RunningFOV=120.0
This is like FOV 90 in other games (like Battlefield, etc)
——–
โโIMPORTANTโโ: When you look through your camera you have another FOV, so you have to change it to your normal fov, change this parameters:
——–
CamcorderNVMaxFOV=83.0
CamcorderMaxFOV=83.0
โถ โTo this:โ
CamcorderNVMaxFOV=110.0
CamcorderMaxFOV=110.0
Note: 110.0 is my favourite but you can go higher or lower if you want (of course)
2# How to Change FPS limit (Uncap FPS)
So, to uncap fps open “OLEngine.ini” and look for these commands:
This three commands may appear a few times in this file, so change everyone to False and 0.
bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62
โถ โSo you have to change it to:โ
bSmoothFrameRate=FALSE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=0
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=0
=)
3# FIX Stuttering
3 Methods, (use all methods for best results.)
– Go to “OLEngine.ini“, under “[TextureStreaming]” Edit “Poolsize=”, and set it to 280 at least: (mine is at 1024 = 1 gb VRAM (I have 3Gb)
Examples: (just test)
PoolSize=1024
PoolSize=280
PoolSize=560

[TextureStreaming]
…
[…]As a matter of fact, increase it anyway. Suggested value: 560 on high-end GPU, 280 on others. Defragmenting your drive might also help with stuttering/small freezes.
…………………………………………………………………………………………….
– In the Same file (OLEngine.ini), look for “TimeBetweenPurgingPendingKillObjects=”, as you can see is set to 60 or so, so change it to 3600.
โถ Like this: TimeBetweenPurgingPendingKillObjects=3600
Originally posted by MBgeek:(http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=17496804&postcount=14)
[…]
TimeBetweenPurgingPendingKillObjects=10I set it to 20 and now I got the stutter every 20 seconds…I then bumped it up to 3600 (1 hour) and haven’t seen it since.
Who knows what will happen after an hour…lol
Hope that helps someone, it was making me nuts

Originally posted by CalinTM:Also, if people have massive stuttering you could disable this line
bUseBackgroundLevelStreaming=True(Works with games that are on UE3 and have massive stuttering, like Bioshock Infinite had, disabled in Bioshock background streaming and the stutter go away).
4# Better Textures Resolution
In “OLEngine.ini” change this:
MaxProcBuildingLODColorTextureSize=1024
MaxProcBuildingLODLightingTextureSize=256
โถ โTo this:โ
MaxProcBuildingLODColorTextureSize=2048
MaxProcBuildingLODLightingTextureSize=1024
So simple! ๐
5# Remove Motion Blur
FIRST OF ALL: I don’t recommend turning off Motion Blur if you are getting like 30fps or less, BUT if you are above 60fps I think is a good Idea to Turn Off Motion Blur. ๐
REMBEMBER: Check the box read only in this .ini file.
Open “OLSystemSettings.ini“, change this:
MotionBlur=True
MotionBlurPause=True
MotionBlurSkinning=1
AllowRadialBlur=True
MaxFilterBlurSampleCount=16
MobilePostProcessBlurAmount=32.0
โถ โTo this:โ
MotionBlur=FALSE
MotionBlurPause=FALSE
MotionBlurSkinning=0
AllowRadialBlur=FALSE
MaxFilterBlurSampleCount=8
MobilePostProcessBlurAmount=16.0
———————————————————————-
OR — Download THIS to Replace your config and turn Motion blur off (but you can do it manually (Look just above).–> (You may have to change the resolution and other things, Only recommended if you don’t exactly know how to do it manually)
So you can download this file made by LoneWolfDon and just replace it: [link]

6# Antialiasing!
Originally posted by SKINNIE:The DLC broke the MSAA Antialiasing[/b] for me. Turns everything really dark to the point of being unplayable. Have to switch bAllowD3D9MSAA in the OLSystemSettings.ini back to False.
Su**s cause MSAA was working so well for me before I bought the DLC. ๐
[/quote][/h1]
——
*Works good on AMD and NVIDIA (I think), but there are some artifacts, kind of fireflies…
(But MSAA really works)
In “OLSystemSettings.ini“, change this:
MaxMultiSamples=1
bAllowD3D9MSAA=False
โถ โTo this:โ
MaxMultiSamples=2
bAllowD3D9MSAA=True
(In “MaxMultiSamples=” you can use 2, 4, or 8 I think)
________________________________________________________
I haven’t test it, but there are another AA commands, look for:
bAllowPostprocessMLAA=False
bAllowTemporalAA=False
โถ โAnd change it to this:โ
bAllowPostprocessMLAA=True
bAllowTemporalAA=True
(First try one, and if it doesn’t work try the other one.)

Originally posted by CalinTM:To use SGSSAA, you need a nvidia GPU and follow these steps from here:
This does require a powerful system!
– Download Nvidia Inspector
– Open up the program
– Open up the Profile settings ( Tool button on the right side of driver version )
– Open the Outlast profile ( if you havn’t created it yet, look in the previous section )
– Paste 0x000010C1 in the “Antialiasing Combatibility” section
– Set “Antialiasing – Mode” to: Override any application setting
– Set “Antialiasing – Setting” to: 2x [2x Multisampling]
– Set “Antialiasing – Transparency Supersampling” to: 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling
– Set “Lod Bias” to: -0.500 for 2x
– -1.000 for 4x
– -1.500 for 8xNote: you can set it to 4x or even 8x if your system is powerful enough, always be sure that the values in multisampling and supersampling match up.
Should look like this:
[link]“Taken from my thread…
Also if you want to enable Physx on the GPU instead of CPU, modify this to False
bDisablePhysXHardwareSupport=False (found in OLEngine.ini)”
Originally posted by CalinTM:You can downsample and disable AA, almost the same effect. My 120hz monitor can’t downsample at 120hz…if you have a 60hz monitor you can downsample to 1440p.
7# Modify Grain Filter
*I think it does not remove the film grain at all*
Go to: C:Program Files (x86)SteamSteamAppscommonOutlastEngineConfig
Then open “ConsoleVariables.ini” and under “[Startups]” write:
“ImageGrain = 0.0” or the desired value.
โถ โSo it looks like:โ
[Startup]
ImageGrain = 0.0
Originally posted by UnnamedSettler :In case removing film grain doesn’t work with the posted method for whatever reason, there’s an alternative method in the discussions. A mod available that removes film grain through the use of Texmod.
[link]
for anyone who can’t stand the film grain, you can try this. It tells you to throw everything into the Win32 folder for Outlast, but my Steam client launches the game through the win64 folder, which meant I needed to change the directories inside of the included .bat file accordingly.
As long as Texmod is in the correct folder with the version of OLGame.exe that steam runs, and you have the .tpf mod on hand, you should be good to go if you’re running the batch file, provided you’ve modified it to match your directories. Sorry if that didn’t make sense..
8# Change Shadow Resolution
Go to “OLSystemSettings.ini” and look for this commands: (try not to search the entire command with the values, just up to the equal sign)
MinShadowResolution=64
MaxShadowResolution=2048
MaxWholeSceneDominantShadowResolution=2048
โถ โAnd change it To this:โ
MaxShadowResolution=4096
MaxWholeSceneDominantShadowResolution=4096
MinShadowResolution=32
Min shadow can also be set at 16, and the big ones can be set at 8192 also.
These settings appear to determine the minimum and maximum possible values for shadow resolution in the game. The higher the minimum value (MinShadowResolution), the darker and richer shadows should appear; conversely the lower the maximum value, many shadows may appear less distinct and grey. Raising or lowering shadow resolutions may result in an impact on performance, but more importantly, it can also result in visual glitches – for example any values above 512 for MinShadowResolution result in obvious glitches, while very low values for MaxShadowResolution similarly result in glitches. In practice the difference between the default and higher values for these settings is minimal to none, but if you wish to test it for yourself, set the minimum to 512 and the maximum to 2048 or even 4096 and see how it looks for you. You may get missing shadows if the minimum is set higher than 32 however, so it may be best just to raise the maximum value. Soure: [link]
OTHER TWEAKS
Increase mouse responsiveness:
Originally posted by mooner:Set ‘OneFrameThreadLag=False‘ in OLSystemSettings.ini for increased mouse responsiveness.
Disable message…
Originally posted by SoulesS:“Does anyone know how to disable messages like “press left click to open the door”? (I can’t turn off in the subtitle menu) They distract and ruin the atmosphere!”
Try this in OLGame.ini
[OLGame.OLHUD]
bAlwaysShowPrompts=false
*NEW* Disable Breathing sounds:
Originally posted by The Ooter Duder:i have emailed the company yesterday and they told me to delete the file called WwiseDefaultBank_VO_Miles.bnk in the CookedPCConsole folder. It works by taking ALL of the main characters sounds away. So far it works great. Hope it helps anyone else who hates heavy breathing in their ears while they are trying to play.
