Overview
Once a week (a day?) a question about old DLC not purchasable on the 2014 version of the game pops up on the forum. This guide is here to give you any information you need to know about this issue. Feel free to add details in the comments so I can add them to the guide. :o)UPDATE : It has now been FIXED by Steam and you should be able to buy any old DLC without owning RS1. Enjoy! 🙂
Buying old Rocksmith DLC on Rocksmith 2014
Rocksmith 2014 allows you to use your old Rocksmith DLC on the newer version of the game. You DON’T need to buy the Import Tool to play with the DLC songs. However, you do NEED to own the original Rocksmith game on Steam, or you will not be able to purchase most of those old DLC.
Why is that ? It sucks…
Yes it does.
So what’s happening here ?
Basically, trying to purchase a DLC from RS1 with only RS2014 in your library will result in this error message :
“Your transaction failed because you are trying to buy ‘Rocksmith – XXXXX song’ which requires ownership of ‘Rocksmith™’. Please correct the error and try again.”
SquirrellyNinja explained it on Ubisoft’s forum[forums.ubi.com] the day after the 2014 version was released:
“This is currently an inherent limitation introduced by Steam. It’s supposed to be a measure to stop people from buying DLC for something they don’t own and wasting their money/feeling ripped off by Steam. Rocksmith 2014 is an unusual case where older DLC has been made compatible which means Steam’s usual policies won’t work and hinder the process. We’re going to be trying tomorrow to work it out with Steam to remove this limitation.”
Writting this in November 2015, nothing really changed as you can see. Some songs/packs have been fixed however but the major part still isn’t available.
Why can’t anyone fix it ?
- Why Ubisoft doesn’t fix this ?
Ubisoft is just not responsible for this issue, it’s all up to Steam. Cross game DLC works fine on both XBOX and Playstation, but that’s just not the way it works on Steam. They do have requested Steam to fix this but that’s all they can do. Some songs/packs have been fixed however as you can see on the following section.
- Why Steam doesn’t fix this, so ?
Dunno.

What about the Import Tool ?
The Import Tool gives you access to the On-disc songs from Rocksmith™ on the 2014 version. Note that a few On-disc songs are not transfered with the tool because of licensing issue:
- Chris Lee – Boss
- Cream – Sunshine of Your Love
- Eric Clapton – Run Back to Your Side
- Seth Chapla – Jules
- Seth Chapla – The Star Spangled Banner
The original Rocksmith game is often on sale for $9.99, be it on Steam directly, Amazon or any other online dealer on the web. This is well worth the money in my opinion as you can add around 50 new songs to your library by buying the game and the import tool for a grand total of $20. That’s basically 40cts per song.
Instead of waiting for a fix that may never happen, you may consider buying the original game when it’s on sale, and add its songs to your 2014’s library by adding the import tool in your cart.
