[PATCH] Fix Fallout 3 for Windows 7 and Up! for Fallout 3

[PATCH] Fix Fallout 3 for Windows 7 and Up!

Overview

Ever since the leap from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or 8.1 RT, Fallout 3 was so to speak bricked. In these means, you can’t use the apps, and spent $9.99 for nothing. This is the relatively simple way to fix that

Preparation – If You’ve Played Before

NOTE : This step is for only those whom are willing to “cheat” their stuff back in. This requires you to have played the game already, just now it stopped working.

To start, try and see what items you had and find their codes at Fallout’s Wikia.

  1. Go to your Documents and My Games Folder. Look for Fallout 3 and open the folder.
  2. Open the Saves Folder and copy your save to your desktop. (in the video example, I do not do such on purpose; I had already tested the method)

After you finished this, reinstall Fallout 3 by navigating Steam > Library > Games > Fallout 3 (or Game of the Year) > Properties. Then, look for Delete Local Content. Once you delete local content, go to Steam > Library > Games > Fallout 3 > Install. Then, see if that fixed it. If not, continue with these steps.

Configuring the Software

We must start with compatilising the software. Navigate to your Steam folder. For instance, I would go to C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout 3 and look for the fallowing :

To navigate to Compatibility settings, right-click the file, click properties, compatibility, and than select the mode for each file below

  • FalloutLauncher.exe – Windows 7
  • Fallout.exe – Windows Vista (SP1)
  • Fallout3 – Garden of Eden Creation Kit.exe – Windows 7
  • GDFInstall.exe – Windows XP (SP3)
  • vcredist_x86.exe – Windows Vista
  • dotnetfx3_x64.exe – Windows 7

Remember to click Apply and then Ok to save the changes. Now, don’t run Fallout yet. We have some more work to do. Your going to need to download an app called Games for Windows Live Client. Google it or go to here[www.xbox.com]. If, when you open Fallout later, it continusly prompts for Games for Windows, you can download a mod from here[www.nexusmods.com].

Now, navigate to the Fallout 3 folder inside the Fallout 3 folder. Right click FalloutPrefs(.ini may be there) and click copy. Paste the copied and replace the text with this pastebin[pastebin.com].

Now go to Your Drive:/Users/Your Username/Documents/My Games/Fallout3/FALLOUT and do the following :

  • Ctrl+F, inset bUseThreadedAI=0, change the value to 1
  • Below the line add iNumHWThreads=2

If you have a Intel HD Graphics Card (find out from going to Start, typing in Device Manager, Display Adapters, and looking for Intel HD Graphics Card), go here[www.nexusmods.com]. Tell it to download manually, and extract the dll to your desktop. Move the DLL, should be called d3d9.dll or d3d9 to Fallout 3’s main folder

Testing

To make sure this worked, boot up Fallout 3 via the Fallout3Launcher.exe via Steam Library. If you can go into a game, than congrats, it worked!

If you can’t please comment down below error codes or the works, thanks for reading!
