Play as any NPC using SRR Binary Editor

Overview

A simple guide on how to change the player’s model to any other model in a few clicks using SRR Binary Editor.

A. Introduction

Hello, chummers ! In this guide I will show you how to change your character’s model to any other NPC’s model. For the sake of this tutorial I’ve created a new decker, Blitz, unfortunately he really lacks pizazz and doesn’t live up to his name. Let’s fix this.

B. Installing SRR Binary Editor

You will not be able to do anything if you do not have SRR Binary Editor on your computer, you can download it here[www.dropbox.com] ( The author of this program is Chris Friedel, A big ‘thank you’ to him ). It comes as a .zip file, once unpacked you’ll have to copy/paste 3 .dll files into the same folder from

SteamsteamappscommonShadowrun Hong KongSRHK_DataManaged

The 3 .dll are as follow :

  • protobuf-net.dll
  • ShadowrunDTO.dll
  • ShadowrunSerializer.dll

For more information on how to run SRR Binary Editor please refer to Chris’ video ( Remember that Returns and Hong Kong have different Game ID, this affects the location of your saves files )

C. Editing “prefab_name”

Changing the model is relatively easy as there is only one value to change. Once you have loaded the saved game you want to edit, follow this path :

1. Find the line that says “story_data” and browse its collection, you’ll see something like this :

2. Make sure that you’ve selected the last line that is at the very bottom in the menu the left ( The one that says “1.isogame.SaveStoryBlock” in my case, otherwise you will not modify the current save. Once you’ve selected the correct save state, simply browse the collection of “newsave_party” ( as shown on the picture above ). This open the following menu :

3. Your character is selected by default so you do not need to change anything on the left, simply scroll down to find the line “prefab_name” and edit its value to display the character you wish to use.

In my case I want to play as Blitz so I replaced :

HumanMale” with “Berlin:Story/HumanMaleBlitz

You can find the name of your prefab in various places : in the shadowrun editor, or more easily on this website.[www.daveofdeath.com] Please respect the following syntax :

[Campaign]:[Faction]/[Namewithoutspace]

Sometimes, factions that have a name with 2 words will drop the space and sometimes won’t :

HongKong:Red Samurai/HumanMaleRedSamuraiCaptain Berlin:KnightErrants/HumanMaleKnightErrantCaptain

So watch out for that if you use the website I linked. You can always look up the exact name in the Shadowrun Editor to be sure. Validate your choices, don’t forget to save and then load up the game to see your new model :

Additional notes :

  • You can still equip different armors but your model won’t change anymore. You’ll always look like whatever you morphed into. This includes disguises such as Tsang maintenance, Aztechnology or Knights Errants, which is a bit immersion-breaking but otherwise they still work as intended.
  • You can select a non-human ( even non-living) form but you will be missing some animations ( or all animations if you decide to become an explosive barrel). It’s quite random, a fire spirit can equip a deck on its back but it doesn’t have an animation for launching grenade. I’d recommend sticking to (meta-)human characters if you don’t want any visual bugs.
  • The models are purely comestic, I recommend you choose the correct race and gender when you create your character to avoid weird inconsistencies.
  • Always make a backup of your saved game !
