Prisoner Housing, Cells vs Dormitories for Prison Architect

Prisoner Housing, Cells vs Dormitories

Overview

This guide looks at the cheapest, efficient vs. expensive, luxurious.Cells/Dormitories with higher Room Quality are going to make your prisoners slightly less harmful. We will be comparing smaller Cells with larger Cells and Dormitories.

Note

All size numbers ARE INCLUDING THE WALLS*!
* unless said otherwise.
Squares refer to INDOOR AREA (5×5 room has 9 squares)
Prices DO NOT account for LIGHTS or FLOORS or UTILITIES (power, water).
Size and price may vary based on how you build your prison.

Cells

Small

The smallest cell you can make is:
4×4 if you have Small Cells researched.
5×4 if you don’t have Small Cells researched.
The cheapest cell you can make is:
760$ walls, 200$ door, 200$ bed, 100$ toilet = 1260$ 5×3 GRADE 0
900$ walls + rest = 1400$ 5×4 GRADE 1

We can bump the grade up by adding items, I was able to make them:
Small Cells: Grade 2 cost: 50$
No Small Cells: Grade 5 cost: 180$

We can also bump the grade up by adding a window:
Increases Grade by 1 and costs 200$
Doesn’t matter if it’s large, same cost, same effect.

Summary:

Windowless:
4×4 1310$ Grade 2
5×4 1580$ Grade 5
Windows:
4×4 1510$ Grade 3
5×4 1780$ Grade 6

This concludes the smallest cells. Now onto the large ones.

Large

The only way to make Grade 10 cells is if they have 16 squares and all the things.
I’ll make these and see how far I can get without 16 squares.

16 squares: 1360$ walls, min. cell costs = 1860$ Grade 3 6×6
9 squares: 1050$ walls, min. cell costs = 1550$ Grade 2 5×5

Adding all the items (bookshelf, chair, desk, shower head, radio, tv) we get:
16 sq. 410$ Grade 9
9 sq. 410$ Grade 8

Summary:

Windowless:
16 sq. 2270$ Grade 9
9 sq. 1960$ Grade 8
Windows:
16 sq. 2470$ Grade 10
9 sq. 2160$ Grade 9

Dormitories

Work in Progress!

Small

Now, dormitories are interesting, because they also require squares,
you can’t just do this and expect it to hold everyone:

The amount of people in a dormitory is:
squares / 4 (you still need beds for them)

Dormitories require SQUARES PER PRISONER,
the more prisoners in the dormitory, the more squares it needs.
Also there are different items and different space requirements.

Here the prices will be the total cost / amount of prisoners it can hold.
Here the grades will be measured with the dormitory filled to the max (ie 4 man dorm will have 4 ppl).

Also prisoners in dormitories will be angry cuz privacy n stuff.

I made a Dormitory Calculator which you can download here:

VirusTotal: [link] Cylance is a false alert, and I’m working on it to prove it’s safe

There reason there isn’t much here, is because it’s not very easy to do this with dormitories, as it varies a lot.
