Prohibition Era Cars: “Gangster” Car Show

Overview

What could be better than a new car for $495.00 in USA cash? The roaring twenties roared with reason. Prohibition left its mark on the national psyche of the United States, and it inspired some remarkable gangster epics. You won’t find this price today, but you can enjoy a gangster journey through time in the latest model cars Forza Horizon 4 has to offer. For those of you who want to drive the map Gangster style, here are the hottest and the oldest legends in the game.

1924 Austin Seven

Description:
The oldest non-fictional car in the game, the Austin Sevens were produced in the United Kingdom and often referred to by the nickname “Baby Austin.”

Much like the Model T in the US, the Austin 7 was an economy car and replaced most of the older cars of the early twenties. One early ad billed the Austin Seven as “The Car for the Feminine Touch” claiming there was no strain in driving an Austin. Perfect for driving Grandma on a slow Sunday drive, don’t expect to beat the Baptists to your local restaurants after Sunday School in this. But, some roads are worth the view.

The Type 35 Series was Bugatti’s most successful Racing model. The Type 35C featured a Roots supercharger, despite Ettore Bugatti’s disdain for forced induction. Output was nearly 128 hp (95 kW) with a single Zenith carburettor. Type 35Cs won the French Grand Prix at Saint-Gaudens in 1928, and at Pau in 1930.

* It has incorrect specifications as it produces 125 hp (93 kW).[3]

The name is an abbreviation of Super Sport Kurz, German for “Super Sport Short”, as it was a short wheelbase development of the Mercedes-Benz Modell S. 1931 Bentley 4-1/2 Liter Supercharged

Description:
The 4½ Litre was one of the most successful cars designed by W.O. Bentley. Bentley produced the 4½ Litre as a bare chassis, with hood radiator and scuttle to be bodied by an independent coachbuilder.

“It’s the four and a half litre Blower, 1931. Why’d they call ’em Blowers? Maybe because of the whacking great supercharger sticking out the front of it. Maybe for the way you blow pushing it anywhere. Thing is a wee bit heavy.” – Alex in-game

“As of 2013, Bentley 4½ Litre automobiles from this inter-war period – the “Belle Époque” of the automobile for some – sold for around €1,000,000. Blowers can fetch more than €7 million and are coveted by collectors despite never winning a single race. For many, the 4½ Litre is to automobiles what the Spitfire is to aircraft.” – Wikipedia

Trivia:
AC/DC singer and car enthusiast Brian Johnson cited the 4½ Litre Le Mans as the best he’d driven: “The first time I saw it, everything went north on us, except me jaw – that went south. I just had to have it. That car, I think, is a masterpiece… It was ludicrously expensive – I mean, just crackers.”

Ian Fleming’s character James Bond drives a 1930 Blower Bentley in three of the 007 Novels, Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Moonraker. In the books, Bond drives one of the last Blower Bentleys built, a battleship grey Convertible Coupé, with French Marchal headlamps.

1931 Bentley 8-Liter

Description:
The 8-Liter is a pre-war luxury car and was made available to purchase during the first year of the Great Depression, usually with custom coachwork for the body. As manufacturing costs became too high, while sales were too low to save the company from financial ruin, Bentley was forced to sell to Rolls-Royce.

The 1932 Ford Coupe ’32, known as the Model B, was the first Ford production model to be fitted with a V8 engine. When this model came out, you still couldn’t buy a drink legit-wise, but you could drive this coupe off the showroom floor for $500 US Dollars! At its slow ride it won’t scare the wildlife, so it works out to be nice for touring and exploring and a trip down Memory Lane, but don’t expect to fly.

1933 Napier Napier-Railton

Description:
This stretched our design is an aero-engined race car. it has a W12 engine with 3 different exhaust systems. It looks much different from the other vintage model beauties shown here, and packs a bit more punch. I’ve yet to get behind the wheel, but would love to do so.

“In 1933, Reid Railton strapped a plane engine to the most rudimentary chassis he could, and the Napier-Railton was born.
This missile on wheels broke all kinds of records in the few years after that, most notably the all-time lap record at the Brooklands oval in England, which it held until the oval was repurposed for military use at the onset of World War II.
The Napier-Railton gets its name from its creator, Reid Railton, as well as its engine, a 24-liter W12 Napier airplane engine, the most powerful engine available at the time it was built. It’s a truly one-of-its-kind vehicle.” from Fandom
