Quick & Dirty Tips: Battle Map for A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia

Quick & Dirty Tips: Battle Map

Overview

Tips to help master Thrones of Britannia combat.

Introduction

Here are a few things I’ve learned through practice. I imagine that this information will be useful for all difficulty levels though I usually play on Very Hard battle difficulty,

This guide may continue to grow as I come across more tips and tricks that I think will help other people progress in their own games.

If you find this guide useful please be sure to thumbs up!

Unit Roles In Thrones of Brittania

1. Shield Castle

Units with shield castle are generally meant to be used as your main infantry line. Use these troops to hold the line, braced and in shield castle, in order to reflect charges and hopefully outlast the opponent’s own infantry line.

2. Wedge Formation

Units with wedge formation are built to be used as your shock troops. Use them for flanking and filling gaps in your main infantry as needed. I like to use wedge formation for the initial charge and then toggle it off to recover melee skill.

3. Melee Skill

In Thrones of Britannia, melee skill is king. Melee skill dictates the accuracy of the unit’s attacks, as well as how often they can dodge enemy attacks. Always try to recruit units with higher melee skill if you can.

4. Archers

I’ve found that archers are pretty weak currently but they can be surprisingly useful for working down enemy cavalry. Bring 2-3 archers and be sure to use flaming shots as they provide bonus versus cavalry. Keep your archer hit squad safe with a decent spear guard.

5. Cavalry

Cavalry are not the beasts that they were in TW:Attila but they can still be useful for clearing missile units and assisting with out-flanking the enemy. I prefer using archers over cav-vs-cav situations as it is easier to avoid casualties on harder difficulties that way. If there is no safe path to the missile troops, just let the enemy waste their ammo on your shield castle formations.

6. General Bodyguard

Your general bodyguard will usually be the best unit on the battlefield but take care in how you utilize this resource in battle. If the general himself dies, you lose your campaign investment. I usually reserve the body guard and only use it to fill in gaps in the main infantry line while knowing with full confidence that the body guard will have an easy time dispatching their target.

Total War Battle Tactics In General

There are basic tactics that can followed through most total war games whether you are playing Shogun, Warhammer, or Thrones of Britannia.

There are a few guides out there already spanning across those multiple games. I recommend checking out the following guide created by Voth.

It is tailored towards TW:Attila but the core of it still very much applies in this title. Be sure to check it out if you find yourself struggling to get a win!
