About the Game

What is Resident Evil HD

It is a remake of the Gamecube game originally released in 2002. The Gamecube game had many revisions over the original PSX game including new story & areas, controls, defensive combat mechanics, costumes, modes.

This game doesn’t change too much except offer, again, new controls and the ability to display natively on widescreens. As well as new costumes featuring Jill & Chris BSAA, exactly from the RE5 DLC. Some areas in the game have been redone in 3D as well, since the specific areas in static images did not hold up well with the new lighting apparently.

What system should I get it on?

Multi-platform analysis[www.eurogamer.net]

Prerelease analysis PS4[www.eurogamer.net]

In summary, the PC/PS4 are pretty much the same except the PC offers higher resolution settings, 60fps and better shadow options.

The One, has some shadow banding issues, but otherwise it too is the same. The PS4 shadows compare to PC medium.

The PS4 version also has issues with ‘frame pacing’. Eurogamer describes it as occasional judder mostly in cut-scenes, but also short bursts in gameplay. The perceived effect is dropped frames, so animations may studder.

As someone who has played both the PS4 and PC version, I can attest that the PS4 is just as fantastic as the PC. If you really want that 60fps option, the PC may be your go-to pick though!

My GPU is older, not sure it can handle it.

According to Eurogamer, the game scales well on older GPUs. So don’t go straight away for 4k, depending on how exactly OLD your GPU is – try 1080p with 30fps shouldn’t be a problem.

General Gameplay

What are the differences between Chris and Jill

There aren’t too many. But they can affect your experience quite a bit.

Chris is considered “harder”.

* only 6 inventory slots

* has to pickup Old Keys to unlock certain doors.

* lighter in his special free inventory slot that can be used to burn crimsons, obtain an optional map, and the Moon Light Sanata key item without having to take up one of the 6 slots.

* Rebecca Chambers is his partner and she can heal all damage from Chris for free at a single point in the game, but different locations depending on the player’s action to save a friend Richard.

* Read he runs faster, I was never sure of this myself, but its a good thing.

* He can take a little more damage than Jill

Jill is considered “easier”.

* has 8 slots

* lock picking tool in her free slot and thus doesn’t have Old Keys she needs to pickup. But now she needs to have the lighter in one of her 8 slots for the reasons mentioned in Chris. After that though, she doesn’t need it.

* has access to the grenade launcher

* Barry is her partner. He allows Jill to get the Shotgun from the trap room sooner than Chris, gives her Acid Grenade launcher rounds, and you can get his gun which has garunteed one hit kills provided you do a certain action in the later half of the game.

* Can entirely skip the Plant 42 boss battle

How do I access their BSAA costumes (or any costume after having unlocked them)?

When you go to select whom to play as, press up and down.

How do I avoid zombies?

If you approach a zombie close enough, and then quickly back off, the zombie will lunge. You can then quickly run to the left or right of him because he’s resting from the lunge.

If the zombie is not facing you, also just run quickly to their left or right. It will “push” them over and they typically do a spin to grab you from behind but by then you’ve already run by them! This also works for the hunter in the 2nd floor dining room 😉

There are so many Mansion Keys! I can’t solve X puzzle or don’t know what to do with Y

The key to keys in particular, and a lot of puzzles in the game, is to use EXAMINE alot. Unlike a lot of other games, immediate use and description of items are not obvious. The names are ambiguous. Examining items will often change their names, their descriptions provide clues, or even reveal special events (eg examining a box will open the box to reveal a whole NEW item). Experiment and explore!

Documents in particular also help with a lot of puzzles. They often contain outright descriptions of the puzzle, or locations to key items.

Can you abuse the infinite grenade launcher glitch?

Nope!

They patched it out!!! You can’t abuse the grenade launcher ammo swap in the item box anymore, personally tested. Booooooo!

Gameplay Actions (Spoilers)

How do I save poisoned Richard?

You have to go to the Medicine Room marked on your map within 5~ minutes.
To get their quickly from the hall with Richard, you move down the hallway into the door at the end. This brings you into the second floor mansion entrance hall. You run across opposite of the door you came out of and into the double door. You’re now in the 2nd floor dining hall. Run to the SECOND door, in this direction its the door on the left. You’re now infront of the iron door that leads you outside. Run past this, around the stair well, into the stair well, at the bottom of the stair well next to it is a door. The serum is on the shelf next to the item box. Grab it and bring it back up stairs.

What is the difference in saving Richard?

Depending on the character, it differs. But both will eventually result in the Assault Shotgun being obtained.

For Jill, arguably not as much. I don’t think there is a reason for her to NOT save Richard though.
When you fight Yawn the snake for the first time, he will assist you and die. You get the assault shotgun The shotgun is obtained sooner than Chris.

For Chris, there is a reason to NOT save Richard.

But if you do save him, Rebecca will be available in the medical room to heal your wounds whenever you want up until you leave to the Courtyard. She will heal all your wounds. You’ll even be teleported there after you save Richard. Also when you get to the shark tank Aqua Ring, Richard will die there instead. The assault shotgun in the bottom of the tank next to the dying shark when you drain the water You have to fight Plant 42.

If you do NOT save him, Rebecca won’t be in the medical room to heal your wounds and you won’t be teleported. Instead, she will appear in the JVOLT room after the Plant 42 boss fight to heal your wounds. DURING the Plant 42 boss right, you will gain control of Rebecca and have to make JVOLT to save Chris. This doesn’t kill Plant 42 like Jill for some reason, but weakens it. Its easier to fight than if you didn’t save Richard. Important for knife runs!!!

What is the difference in the Barry decision in the crypt?

As Jill:
Choosing not to give Barry his gun when Lisa is attack will kill him. You can no longer get the best ending possible. You will be able to get Barry’s magnum gun. This ALSO lets you skip the final boss battle. You can leave the mansion without it self destructing, and Tyrant won’t appear. Wesker will drop a key that can be used to unlock your partner’s cell and the landing pad

Saving Barry will force the self destruct sequence to activate. This will unlock the door to your partner. However, now you have to fight Tyrant at the end of the game

What is the difference in the Rebecca ‘decision’?

As Chris:
When you obtain the emblem key from the box toward the end of the game, and unlock Spencer or Trevor’s office with it and enter, you will hear a scream. Its Rebecca in the second floor study. You have about 3 minutes to get to her, or she’s automatically dead. You can choose to not even go to the study and just ignore it!

If you want to save her, you have to leave the office, enter the door next to you around a little table. In this room, there may be one or two hunters if you haven’t kill them yet. You have to run up the stairs and make a right at the top. Run around the corner and into the door at the far end. There may or may not be a zombie to right or up after coming through the door. Run up and there is another door, enter there. Kill the hunter to save Rebecca if you made it in time! The result is you can get the best ending possible and you MUST fight Tyrant at the end of the game. Rebecca activates the self destruct sequence automatically.

Just walk away and continue what you were doing. Or wait some time and then go to the study to see she’s dead. Quick fact: in the original, she gets decapitated. In the Gamecube remake, she doesn’t. Now, you can skip the final boss battle with Tyrant. You can’t get the best ending

Can you kill Lisa Trevor?

No. She’s invincible. Ironic how the “screw up” is the most resilliant experiment in Umbrella’s repetoire. Don’t shoot at her and waste ammo. Run run by her, she’s slow.

When do you get to make JVOLT and how to use it?

As Jill, you can do it immediately just by getting into the room in the gallery of the Residence and combining medicines.

As Chris, you must not save Richard. Begin the Plant 42 boss fight.

The JVOLT is fairly easy to make. There is a description on the wall.
Run to 003, go into the basement, climb the ladder in the control room up to the Aqua ring, there is a side door you probably havent been in yet in the center of the ring. Use JVOLT on the vines.

How do you save Jill/Chris?

You have to collect MO Disks and use them on the card readers in the basement.

The important one you need to get before going into the mansion basement crypt is the Tiger statue. You have to get the Yellow gem from the Eagle room. Run downstairs, put the Yellow gem into the Tiger statue. You have disk 1.
Disk 2 is outside the project room in the lab with the staircase doing down. Its on a gourney.
Disk 3 is on a shelf inside the projector room besides the keypad.

You pay to put disk 1, 2, and 3 in any order into the little gamecube machines:

Machine 1 inside the office where you refill the fuel cell.
Machine 2 is inside the morgue room after you go through the airvents.
Machine 3 is outside the engine/self destruct room. There is a little maze thing after the room where you insert the fuel cell, but before the panel to start the elevator. Its hidden in the corner of the room. About 3 chimeras in here all together.

You can now open the door.

How do I skip the final boss?

To skip the final boss, you cannot save your primary partner. (Barry or Rebecca). They automatically lead to the initiation of the self destruct sequence.

Make sure you do not interact with the self destruct sequence machine in the boiler room yourself after you beat Tyrant the first time. Wesker drops a Laboratory Key. This key unlocks your other partner (Chris or Jill) cell door, whom you can save, and the landing pad elevator door to beat the game. Tyrant will not appear.

Unlockables & Achievements

How do I unlock the costumes?

Jill’s Sarah Connor costume = complete the game once with her

Jill’s RE3 costume= beating the game twice with her

Chris Mexican costume = beat the game once with him

Chris RECV costume = beat the game twice with him

How do I unlock new modes?

Real Survivor mode = beat the game for the first time, beat the game on Once Again on Normal or Hard.
This mode is essentially Hard mode without linked item boxes and no auto aim.

Invisible Enemy mode = beat the game on Real Survivor mode. All enemies, including bosses, are invisible. You can select difficulty. Beating this gives you access to Shinji’s thank you message and art gallery.

One Dangerous Zombie mode = beat the game as both Chris and Jill. Forest chases you around Once Again mode and if you shoot him, you die. He disappears after you beat the Crimson zombie and enter the Courtyard. I dont think you can turn this off after unlocking him!

What are the unlockable weapons?

Note these weapons cannot be used in Real Survivor or Invisible Enemy.

Samurai Edge = beat the game on normal or hard in 5 hours or less.

Rocket Launcher = beat the game on normal or hard in under 3 hours.

The achievement says to beat the game in less than 5 hours and 3 hours? Do these stack and who is better to do it with?
They do stack, and I personally think Chris is easier to speed run. with him that I had success with at 2 hours that I could easily improve on.

I also HIGHLY recommend you do these on normal or hard. Because you can unlock the rocket launcher, required for another achievement! Two birds one stone. Also, if you’re into the thrill, go for the no save achievement here too. THREE birds!

How do you do a knife only run?

You can do this on any difficulty/mode. Also you CANNOT use defensive items or stomp on zombies (rare to happen). You also HAVE to use the rocket launcher in the final boss if you did not skip him. Dont worry, that doesnt count.

Simply avoid all zombies and Hunters. You only HAVE to kill the bosses and the dog with the collar. As Chris, don’t save Richard as this enables you to make JVOLT. Don’t save your partners, and skip the final boss. The hardest boss, imo, is the Crimson Prototype in the crypt. You have to save immediately before him and make sure to bring 1 or 2 full heals. Learn how he moves and get used to auto aim + knife once + run.

However, if you’re on Real Survivor mode, you’re going to have quite a challenge. Knifing is much easier with auto aim, but without it, you need to learn how to angle the character better too! But this is just for a challenge, not a trophy or unlockable.

An achievement says to obtain all weapons, how?

You have to load your grenade launcher with all 3 types of rounds.

You also have to let barry die to pickup his gun.

Don’t forget to grab the self defense gun in the 002 room in the Residence with the man who hung himself.

Unlock the Samurai Edge & Rocket Launcher.

An achievement says to visit all rooms? I did!

You have to PICKUP EVERY ITEM from EVERY room including documents! The description is missing that. If you refer to your map, you can see rooms in red where they’re “incomplete”. Rooms in a greenish mean = 100%.

Also, you must save Jill/Chris from the prison room using the MO Disks. When the cutscene ends, *re-enter* the cell room! There is ammo on the floor. It counts -.-
