Resident Evil 8

  • In the beginning of the game, after Mia finishes reading the story to baby Rose, Mia gets defensive over the way Ethan tried to explain how baby Rose didn’t need to hear such a scary story. At first glance, it may seem like Mia just got defensive because she didn’t want to live her life in fear; however, it’s seeming more likely that she got defensive because the story was important to her and she felt a sort of “Maternal pride” in that story. No different than when a parent takes pride in reading stories to their children in real life. Only in this case, she’s not actually her mother so Ethan’s remark was a sort of reminder of that fact.

  • When Mia are about to drink the wine together, Mia gets shot in her upper right shoulder and she looks out towards the window. At first glace, one would think she’s in shock from being suddenly shot. However, it seems more likely that she just wasn’t actually injured by the bullet nor felt any real pain, and in fact was just trying to find out where it came from. She looked more pissed off about it than anything.

  • After Chris & his team infiltrates the Winter’s home and neutralizes Mia/Taking Ethan & Rose, Ethan has a sort of flashback to a memory of when he got a phone call from the Doc and makes an appointment for Thursday. Ethan & Mia quickly gets into a heated discussion as she tries to tell him that Rose isn’t the one they should be worried about. She then flat out says, “We matter, Ethan! You matter!”. At this point, even Ethan (as well as the rest of us) has noticed that she’s not fully telling him everything. Unfortunately, she doesn’t get the chance to because he gets a call from work and has to take it, thus ending the conversation. (Shout-out to the developers because the animations for the facial expressions on Mia’s face were incredible! It was really easy to feel her emotions from her face and felt more like a movie than anything.)

  • This next part is really about to get a lot of you, because it got me good too. After waking up at the attacked van, and answering the phone presumably belonging to the dead soldier on the ground. There’s a set of documents that states there needs to be, “At least two transport officers to accompany them”. And yet, there’s only 1 dead soldier on the ground. It’s possible the 2nd officer was the driver, in which you cant see them anyways because the windshield of the van is completely dark & dirty. However, that’s not the trippy part. The trippy part comes next. After walking for a bit, Ethan comes across a fence with some barbed wire that he crouches to get through. While moving, he cuts his left hand on the barbed wire. Fast forward a bit to the house he reaches, and after he hears some sort of commotion, you go back up the stairs you just came down. Now on this part, Ethan has to crawl under the knocked down shelf, and when he does this his left hand touches a lot of blood on the ground that isn’t his. Now when they show this hand, you’d think they were showing it to exemplify that a bad thing happened in that house. However, it now seems even more likely that they were showing you that the hand was already healed from the cut it had received on the barbed wire. (Capcom was sneaky good for this one)

  • On the part where you meet the old man with the shotgun, you soon get pulled underground and get your hand partially bit off, losing 2 fingers and a chunk of the side of your left hand. Now let’s fast forward a bit to where you’re in the house surrounded by Lycans (The creatures). After hearing the woman on the radio telling people to come to Luiza’s house for a safe haven, Ethan opens the broken door with his left hand. However, notice the amount of force it took to open the door. He has to actually push on it a couple of times before fully pushing it open. Now doing all of this with a hand thats been partially bitten off should be excruciating. He should be using his Right hand instead, AND he should be grunting or making sounds expressing the pain he’s in. However, he does not. In fact, if you didn’t see part of his hand missing, you couldn’t actually tell it was from the way he acts. Most players would completely overlook that detail, or would just think it was Capcom being lazy and not adding more important details/expressions. And given the day & age we are currently in, where most games take 4-6 hours to beat with an ending you could probably predict from the trailers, it’s understandable why many players would reach such a conclusion. Games nowadays are not very detailed, especially to such an extent. However, Resident Evil is clearly an exception to the rule. They are very meticulous in what they do & do not show. With that said, it’s clear that the reason Ethan showed no abundant signs of discomfort when opening the door was because he probably wasn’t feeling it to the extent a normal person would, and in fact, it was probably already starting to regenerate. Of course we wouldn’t notice it beginning the regeneration because he wraps it tightly with a bandage. (Amazing how smooth Capcom was in these details)

  • After running for your life, in a situation that makes “dire” seem like wishful thinking, the creatures straight up surround you, showcasing their massive numbers. Which is when a cutscene appears, and Ethan is shot in the left thigh with an arrow, just above his knee. Then, he gets cut down…literally. He’s hit with an axe (or something resembling an axe) held by a Lycan. Then he’s thrown like a rag-doll. As if those things weren’t damaging enough, the big guy (You can’t miss him) jumping down and breathing heavily in front of you with such ferocious smelling breath would definitively be enough to kill a man. However, after they leave due to the sounds of the bells, Ethan pulls the arrow out, and is seemingly fine. Just as before, because players aren’t used to games being so intricate in their details, one would most likely not think twice about this scene. However, it’s scenes like this that is what she meant by, “You mean didn’t think it was weird- No matter how much you got hurt?”.

  • After the unfortunate events of what happens in Luiza’s house, as Ethan escapes through the window, he first pounds his left damaged hand hard on the wall in anger. This is another example of the lack of pain he feels considering half his hand is destroyed.

  • When Ethan first encounters Heisenberg, he’s stabbed in the torso with a big piece of metal. Another prime example of just how much Ethan got injured and most players didn’t think twice about it.

  • This is the first time we see the “family” in a room together. Although none were originally related, they’re a family now bound by “blood” (Aka the mutamycete). This obsession with a family, it’s very familiar…

Resident Evil 8 [Part 2]

  • Got hit with the giant hammer while running from the Lycans. This definitly should’ve broken some bones, but it did not for Ethan. Times like this I keep hearing that quote again, “No matter how much you got hurt?”

  • Ethan gets stabbed in both legs with a Sickle by the twisted daughters. Another example of his regeneration abilities.

  • This part definitely should’ve been a big clue as to the truth of Ethan Winters. After the Daughters bring Ethan to Lady Dimitrescu, she drinks some of his blood. Now for any “Vampire Diaries”, “Buffy”, or “The Originals” fans know how good human blood is to vampires. As long as the person is alive, it’s fresh blood and therefore the best kind. However, when lady Dimitrescu drinks Ethan blood, she actually insults it. At first thought, you’d think the insult was just that…an insult. However, this “insult” was actually a critique, and a very literal one. She says, “Hm. Starting to go a little stale.” This is because he’s not a normal man, and she’s literally able to taste it. As a vampire fan myself, I was disappointed that I overlooked this clue on my first playthrough.

  • After you use the Maroon Eye to open the door, one of the daughters appears and comes to kill Ethan. As she’s taking form, one of her bugs crawls out of Ethan’s right hand. Personally, I considered this scene to be so damn cool. A bug coming out of his hand, SO GRUESOME! However, what I didn’t realize on my first playthrough was that the bug coming out of his right hand was the only injury he had on that hand. Now this is VERY ODD considering a few minutes ago he was hooked in both hands & strung up, making his only way to escape meaning he had to literally rip his hand to get off the hooks. This wound should’ve still been there since it was so fresh, but due to his regenerative abilities, it was already healed. The attention to detail is incredible!

  • This next one is just a theory, but it’s still important enough for me to inform you about it just in case it’s proven to be true. The daughters often talk about the cruel things they enjoying doing to men; however, only when they refer to Ethan Winters, do they use the term “Man thing”. One may think this is just how they choose to refer to him, and nothing more. However, I suspect it could be because they can sense that he’s not a full man, more so not just a man. Because in that sense, he literally is a “Man thing”. Another interesting point is how often they specifically mention “healthy men”. Like why not just say men in general, the inclusion of “healthy” I suspect is a sort of Easter egg from the developers, do to the fact that Ethan is about as far from “healthy” as one can get.

  • In the journal found in Lady Dimitrescu’s room, we see that she doesn’t like the “family” she’s apart of. This may seem like a minuscule detail on the surface, but if you can fully understand what is & is not written here, she’s saying she doesn’t want to be part of that “family”. Which suggests that it wasn’t her idea, and instead it was Mother Miranda’s. Meaning, Mother Miranda made them into a family, suggesting that she has an obsession with the idea of a family. Now it could be that that’s because she lost the 1 person who mattered most to her; however, because Eveline (The documents were found from Re7) also had an obsession with the idea of a “family”. The agents couldn’t understand the reasoning by this obsession. If it was because Eveline believed it’d be easier to infiltrate communities if she had a family, as opposed to being the lonesome child. Or if it was because she was young and felt that she never had a family and really desired one. The reason for Eveline “family” obsession was never made truly clear. However, because Mother Miranda seems to have the same obsession, I considered it worth noting.

  • Ethan just got slammed about 3-4 stories down and broke no bones, suffered no concussion or any clear injuries. In fact, he just kept moving as if it never happened. Clear representation of how his lack of pain/damage is due to the fact that he’s not human anymore.

  • Ethan just got his right hand beautifully sliced off. He then pours some alcohol on it and within seconds of reconnecting it, he begins to regain function in the hand. Now because the jacket was in the way, he couldn’t see the hand healing before our eyes. But it was at this point in the game many players knew something more was happening to Ethan, something we never anticipated. (Too bad we missed all the other earlier signs that was before this part of the game -_- )

  • Found an old journal detailing the creations of the 3 known as the “daughters”. Made completely of bugs, common flies specifically. Other than those details, found something mentioning “Cryptobiosis of Tardigrade or Polypedilum vanderplanki”. I’ve no idea what that refers to, but I’m noting it here now incase I find some more information to it.

  • Soon as we grab the Dagger of Death’s Flowers, Ethan is grabbed by Lady D. and stabbed with her sharp claws in the stomach/torso area. There’s no reason he shoud’ve gone unaffected by a wound of this degree. Such a pity I didn’t pay attention to it in my first playthrough.

  • While finishing off Lady Dimitrescu, she grabs Ethan ensuring he will fall with her. Now they were at the top of one of the towers of the Castle. And yet Ethan took no fall damage. I’m well aware that he’s not normal (Due to me have beaten the game once already) but does that really means his body should’ve felt nothing from a fall of that height? Even if it didn’t kill him, a dislocated bone or something should’ve happened…right? Just some food for thought, may need to eat it one day so I’m leaving it here.
