Overview
A guide for aspiring scientists that enumerates all science blueprints.
Science: the fundamentals
The first thing you need to know is that almost all blueprints require a Facility. This is either a Toolbox or a Workbench. When a blueprint requires a Toolbox, all you need to do is buy one from a merchant. Honest Bill’s Pawn Shop in Main Street usually keeps one, but you can find them elsewhere as well. Then, you can go to any crafting table, for instance one is located in Richter’s shop in Riverside, and craft those blueprints, provided you have the necessary ingredients. When a blueprint requires a Workbench, you need to go to a specific crafting table for Science crafting. The earliest one you can find is located in the first room inside the Marsh Warehouse in Riverside.
There are four ways to gain blueprints:
- Buy them – learn blueprints from your inventory by double-clicking them
- Find them – just like buying, you learn these blueprints from your inventory
- Research them – you don’t receive a blueprint in your inventory and can immediately craft the item
- Crafting ideas – gained as blueprints in your inventory after passing science checks in certain situations
In order to research blueprints, you need to Rest and assign your character (or multiple characters) the Research task. You can either do General Research, which will unlock a random blueprint, or research specific items from your inventory to receive a specific blueprint. This does not destroy the item in your inventory. Researching specific items progresses faster than doing General Research.
Furthermore, you can use your Science skill to interact with the world. If you hover your mouse over the remains of a vehicle, for instance, you can right click and select Science on the wheel to salvage it for crafting components. Very useful if you need more scrap metal.
When a blueprint’s ingredients include Metal or Textile, there are multiple possible ingredients that can be used for them. For Metal, these can be either Metal Sheets or any metal weapon. For Textile, these can be either Cloth Straps or any general clothing item.
Weapons
Creates:
1 Crossbow
1 Blueprint: Crossbow Bolt
Ingredients:
1 Feral .270
1 Rubber Tubes
1 Springs
Requirements:
7 Science
2 Firearms
Toolbox
Description:
A weapon that does 7-9 physical damage and has an attack cost of 5 AP. You will need to reload after every shot but with a reload cost of 2 AP, that shouldn’t be an issue. It’s a very good alternative to rifles if you want to create your own ammunition. It’s also the only blueprint that creates another blueprint (for its ammunition) when crafted. The blueprint for the Crossbow can be learned either by doing General Science Research or by researching a Feral .270 rifle while Resting.
Creates:
1 Rapid Repeating Pistol
Ingredients:
1 Stallion M1910
1 Cogs
1 Metal
Requirements:
8 Science
2 Firearms
Workshop
Description:
A pistol that has a very potent damage output because of its tiny attack cost of 2 AP. Used together with Snapshot, the cost goes down to just 1 AP per attack, meaning you can empty out most of its magazine each turn. Its reload cost is a whopping 5 AP but the pistol has a very large magazine of 10 bullets. The downside is that it uses a lot of ammunition relative to its damage per shot, but it’s still worth it, especially against lots of weaker foes against which a more potent attack would be wasteful. Blueprint gained either by doing General Science Research or by researching the Stallion M1910, which can be bought at Honest Bill’s Pawnshop. Since it uses .22 ammunition, which you can easily craft, buy, and scavenge on your journeys, you probably won’t run out of bullets any time soon.
Creates:
1 Stun Rod
Ingredients:
1 Baton
1 Copper Wires
1 Battery
Requirements:
6 Science
1 Melee
Workshop
Description:
The Stun Rod is a melee weapon that’s very easy to make and has the unique modifier in combat which sometimes makes it stun your foes. Its damage of 1-5 is unremarkable for the 4 AP attack cost and its stun effect has never occurred in all of my combat tests.
Creates:
1 Canister Bomb
Ingredients:
2 Gunpowder
1 Screws
1 Phosphorus
1 Metal
Requirements:
2 Science
Toolbox
Description:
This is a throwable weapon with a very small science requirement to make. Equipped in the quick bar, it can be used in combat to create a large and very powerful explosion. While its damage is listed as 20-30, during my testing it did varied damage from 8 to 18 on single targets.
Creates:
1 Spectral Ray Emitter
Ingredients:
1 Radiant Anomalous Rock
1 Electrical Parts
1 Copper Wires
1 Metal
Requirements:
5 Science
Toolbox
Description:
This is an optional quest item that helps you advance through The Blasted Street. While it can be used as a weapon outside of that, it uses batteries for ammunition, making it almost unsustainable for longer engagements. Its damage is 8 for a cost of 4 AP, which is alright for rifle-tier weapons. It does look cool though.
