Secret and Super Secret Rooms – An Illustrated Guide

Overview

My aim, with this guide, is to point you to the right direction on finding the Secret Room and Super Secret Room on Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, of course, using (poorly 😉 ) edited screenshots.

Secret Room

Most of the floors (if not all of them) have a Secret Room filled with goodies waiting to be found.

The basics about it that you need to now:

  • Must be, at least, two rooms adjacent to it – more adjacent rooms, more probability.
  • All entrances of the room, must be accessible naturally (must have accessible floor and can’t have rocks, mushroom’s etc, blocking it)

Adjacent rooms can’t be:

  • Boss Room
  • Super Secret Room (to be confirmed…)

Always go first for the “holes” in your map that have the most adjacent rooms to it.
If you don’t have plenty of bombs to test, remember to filter those that don’t met the criteria above.

Check the map for “holes” with the most adjacent rooms to it (red arrow in the map):

Bomb it:

And profit! (or not, in this case):

Examples

Looking at the walls of this 2×2 room, we can eliminate 2 of 3 holes in this floor, making it easy to find the Secret Room at the eastern one.

Secret Room on (Spoiler) Dark Room

Secret Room in a fairly difficult floor to find it. At least 4 “holes” in the map with pretty good odds. In situations like this, remember that all the walls of that “hole” must be naturally accessible for it to be a Secret Room.

Secret Room in a somewhat rare location (only two adjacent rooms in a floor with “better” candidates).

Super Secret Room

The Super Secret Rooms are harder to find.

Now, instead of looking for “holes” in your map, we need to look for how the map of the floor is constructed and work first on the end of the branches of your map. That will maximize your chance of finding a Super Secret Room.

First of all, the Super Secret Room must be adjacent to a regular room, that is, don’t search for Super Secret Rooms on those rooms:

  • Boss Room
  • Treasure Room
  • Shops
  • Arcades
  • Challenge Rooms
  • And on…

There are rare moments that you gonna see a Super Secret Rooms next to a Secret Rooms, but, keep in mind that it still needs to be adjacent to a regular room.

The concept of branches.

This is not an official concept, but i think its the easiest way to find the Super Secret Rooms:

If you look at a open map, you can see that most of the rooms are connected to each other following some lines. The thing is, there is a higher probability that the Super Secret Room will be at the end of those lines.

Below i try to show you that idea in a small map, highlighting those branches in yellow, with red arrows for high probability and green for low probability, in my opinion.

My fist attempt on the top arrow, without success:

And my second attempt in the right arrow, found it!:

More SS showing the SSR at the end of room branches:

Super Secret Room in a single branch floor layout, common layout on early levels (Basement and Cellar). At those scenarios, remember the rules that the SSR must be always in a accessible wall, and filter those walls that don’t follow the rules.

Extras Thoughts

On a shortage of bombs?
Some enemies use explosive projectiles, if you are in a room that you think that could be adjacent to a Secret Room, try to use that in your advantage, luring their projectiles to try to open that room.

Guts helping me to find secret doors. You have to be fast to avoid damage and have a little luck cos’ their shots follow a random pattern.

Gurgles are far easier, cos their shots will go to your location.

Use Secret Rooms to gain access to other locked rooms
If you discovered a Secret Room that is adjacent to an Treasure Room, Curse Rooms etc, you always can “trade” a bomb, for a key (Treasure), a coin (Arcade) or some damage (Curse), by bombing the wall next to that room.

This Boss Challenge Room would be inaccessible to me in this floor because i have more than one full red hearth. But i found a Secret Room adjacent to it and i can use it to give me access by bombing the adjacent wall.

Abuse of teleportation items
Be it pills, activated item or red chest, they can send you directly to the Secret Rooms, saving you some bombs and trouble.
