Overview
Castle Shadowgate is a dangerous place, and you’ll need all the help you can get to get all the achievements!
Introduction
While playing the game, I created the full map of the game, to help me orient myself.
[link]
I printed a custom version for me and kept many notes. Now that I’ve finished the game, I didn’t want to just throw them away, and I thought to share them with you, in case you find them useful too. (I could have made a new, more polished version, but I’m too lazy for that!) While thinking about it, I also started writing sections of the guide, and well, here we are!
Hope it helps!
P.S.: The guide provides help mostly for the Master difficulty.
There are many achievements where you have to complete certain objectives. I’ve marked them down in various ways (corresponding achievement in parenthesis):

Master Adventurer
This achievement is awarded for uncovering 100% of the map locations and notes.
also: Journeyman Adventurer (80% of the map),
and Novice Adventurer (50% of the map).
Looking at the maps, by my count (and please, correct me in the comments if I’m wrong) there are:
- 99 rooms
- 7 close-up screens
- 2 special screens
for a grand total of 108 locations to visit/examine.
You can take a look of the full map here. Don’t be confused with the extra markings/drawings, they are added if you look at certain things and they don’t count towards this achievement.
All rooms are fully accessible in Master Mode. (Maybe in Journeyman too, I’ve mostly played in Master, and did only a quick pass through Journeyman).
Sooner or later you will probably encounter most of these rooms, but here is some extra information for the special ones (by order of appearance on the map):
This can (and should) be combined with the Black Axe Quest.
See the Axe Wielder achievement for more info.
These two rooms never appear on the map, I created the thumbnails and added them myself for completion’s sake. They don’t count towards this achievement, and are not included in the 99 rooms you have to visit.
As you can see in the maps, we have:
- a Hat in the Pit (Lower Catacombs)
- a Badge in the Mine (Upper Catacombs)
These two are required for the current achievement, but are also part of the Master Investigator achievement.
See Master Investigator for more info.
Master Tradesman
This achievement is awarded for examining 600 different items in the game.
also: Journeyman Tradesman (500 different items)
and Novice Tradesman (400 different items).
600 items must be pretty much everything that there is in the game to examine. By examine, it means to LOOK at every object (scrolls, books, skulls, food, weapons, wearables, etc.), as well as every other item on screen (doors, statues, banners, windows, etc.).
To be honest, I’ve never understood what counts and what not, so I looked at everything available, including the same objects, with their state changed (e.g. closed and open doors, closed and open scrolls, frozen and unfrozen lake, wild and tamed Air Elemental, etc.).
After finishing the game on Master, I still hadn’t completed the achievement; on replaying the game, it popped after looking at the mushrooms in Wizard’s Den. Which means that you really can’t miss anything at all!
Master Necromancer
Experience 48 unique deaths in the game. Master mode.
also: Journeyman Necromancer (35 unique deaths)
and Novice Necromancer (25 unique deaths).
In the following list, there are 47 unique deaths, and a dozen or so falls from windows. The window jumps are not all unique, as I was on my 55th death, and the achievement hadn’t popped. So try a few jumps, especially from distinct rooms, but don’t really bother with all the tower windows.
- Entrance: Suicide by dirk.
- Entrance: Suicide by torch.
- Snuffed out torch.
- Alcove: Collapsed floor (try to take the book first).

- Catacombs, Skull Door: Blasted by Skull Door (by placing the Bladed Sun in the wrong place).
- Catacombs, Summoning Chamber: Talk 3 times to Talimar.
- Catacombs, Summoning Chamber: Destroyed by Talimar: (I don’t really know which of the following count as unique since you get killed in the same way in each instance)
- Take too long to reach the Summoning Chamber.
- Open the Skull Door and don’t enter, but leave.
- Enter the Summoning Chamber and then try to leave.
- Use the Staff of Ages on Talimar.
- Use the Staff of Ages on the Behemoth.
Master Scholar
This achievement is awarded for solving 62 major puzzles in the game. Master mode.
also: Journeyman Scholar (50 major puzzles)
and Novice Scholar (40 major puzzles).
I got this achievement, but it is the only one that its specifics utterly elude me. I guess that every composite action that you take counts towards this achievement. For example: using the glyph skulls to power the castle, using the gear mechanism, using various spells, killing goblins, catching Elementals, cleaning the castle, burning torches and so forth.
I got the Journeyman Scholar easily, while playing the game normally and by following the necessary steps towards the finale. The Master Scholar popped after I competed some extra objectives, which aren’t essential for the completion of the game, such as creating all the different recipes in the lab, solving all the Djinn riddles, and getting the black axe.
(Credit to Mtext for the clarification) “Note that “use self on lever” to open the drawbridge (which counts) is apparently different from “hit lever”, which DOESN’T count to trigger it. Fortunately you can go raise the drawbridge and re-lower it properly.”
Saint
This achievement is awarded for praying at every altar.
There are 8 altars in total, where you can pray. These are located at:
- Alcove, Caves (Hooded Figure)
- Battlement, Castle (Feare, left)
- Battlement, Castle (Reliant, centre)
- Battlement, Castle (Despaire, right)
- Landing #4, West Tower
- Landing #2, South Tower
- Lava Flow, Catacombs (Goblin-like rock)
- Subterrane, Upper Catacombs (Hand with trident)
Notice the three distinct figures at the Battlement.
Wizard
This achievement is awarded for casting every spell.
There are 13 spells in total to find, learn, and cast. 7 of them are absolutely necessary and you will have to use them at some point. They are marked in bold. So, you may have to look out for the rest of them. The spells are the following:
- Invokan (Alcove, altar book)
Used on obelisks throughout the game to summon Lakmir. - Aggaap (Cellar, frozen scroll)
Used to open the hatch on the floor (Antechamber, Caves). - Entraiz (Sewer, scroll on the shelf)
Used on the gate to open it (Grate, Caves). - Myyxx (Hideaway, 1st scroll from corpse)
Used on the contraption in the Laboratory to make various potions.
See Alchemist for more info. - Placleer (Library, left book on the large desk, needs glasses to read)
Used on the sky to clear out the stormy clouds (Observatory, Banquet Hall and wherever the sky is visible).
In the Dragon’s Nest there is a skull with melded glasses on. You have to take the skull and use the dirk on it, in order to pry them off and then wear them. - Flumoris (Watch Tower, 2nd scroll from the bag)
Used to stun the two goblins in Landing #1 (West Tower) and to reveal the objects of the Empty Chamber (South Tower). - Terrakk (Observatory, scroll on the bench)
Used on the globe in the Study, in order to obtain the Exquish spell scroll. - Crysalys (Inner Keep, 1st scroll from bag)
Used on the Rock Table after putting in the correct crystals, in order for the bridge over the chasm to appear (Chasm, Catacombs). - Exquish (Study, scroll in the globe)
Used to extinguish the torch.
Useful for the Master Investigator achievement.
To open the globe, you have to use the Terrakk spell on it. - Sparrx (Empty Chamber, scroll on the desk)
Used to summon the Wyvern at the Spire (North Tower).
You can’t open and read the scroll while on the desk, you have to take it and do it through the inventory. - Magj’ryk (Strong Room & Empty Chamber)
Used to enchant the hammer.
With the enchanted hammer you can break the third mirror in the Mirror Room and enter (Special Death #1), and it’s part of the Avenger achievement.
The parchment of this spell is torn into two pieces. The upper half is on the Strong Room floor, the bottom half is on the desk in the Empty Chamber. Collect them and combine them in the inventory. - Acensur (Music Room, scroll on the couch)
Used on circle (Circle Chamber, Caves) in order to gain access to Lakmir’s Abode. - Runy’tr (Inner Sanctum, 1st scroll from chest)
Used on runes throughout the game to pry them loose and take them.
Alchemist
This achievement is awarded for successfully creating all recipes in the lab.
In order for the Laboratory contraption to work, the 3rd skull must be placed at the Entrance dais. To get the 3rd skull you have to cast Placleer at the sky in the Banquet Hall (through the mural on the wall), look at the floor, and pry a tile off with the bar.
There are 5 recipes in total. For each one, you have to put the ingredients in, and then cast the Myyxx spell. A vapor will appear that you will have to USE. The recipes are:
- Deep Purple Vapor (Banshee curse antidote)
- Mushroom (Wizard’s Den)
- Flower (Well)
- Snowdrop Flower (Inner Keep)
- White Vapor (rat transfiguration) (Hidden Death #8)
- Root (Entrance)
- Horned Animal Skull (Well)
- Dirty Water (Courtyard moat)
- Cyan Vapor (freezing essence) (see Avenger for more info)
- Ice Chip (Cellar, use hammer on ice)
- Horned Animal Skull (Well)
- Kane (Store Room, North Tower)
- Dead Flowers (Battlement, on the base of the statue)
- Fuchsia Vapor (sweet recipe)
- Moss (Well)
- Kane (Store Room, North Tower)
- Bread (Strong Room, West Tower)
- Black Vapor (failed recipe, tastes like licorice)
- any wrong combination of ingredients
Avenger
This achievement is awarded for killing nine different goblins.
This can (and should) be combined with the Axe-Wielder achievement.
- Goblin #1 (Grand Hallway)
- Hit the Goblin to knock it out.
- Kill it with any weapon.
- Take the goblin tunic.
- Goblin #2 (Small Corridor)
- Hit the Goblin to knock it out.
- Kill it with any weapon.
- Take the goblin helm.
- Goblins #3, #4 (Landing #1, West Tower)
- Use the Flumoris spell on the Goblins to stun them.
- Hit them to knock them out.
- Kill them with any weapon.
- Take the goblin armor.
- Goblins #5, #6 (Grotto)
- Wear the three goblin items (tunic, helm, armor).
- Enter the Guardroom, disguised as a goblin.
- Take the crossbow and bolts from the bench.
- Go to the Grotto and use the (loaded) crossbow on the cave, twice.
Enter the Goblin Hole and take the Black Axe to get the Axe Wielder achievement.
- Goblins #7, #8, #9 (Guardroom)
- Use the Magj’ryk spell on the hammer to enchant it.
- Go to Lava Flow (Catacombs) and dip the hammer in the lava to doubly enchant it.
- Create the Blue Mist in the Laboratory (see Alchemist)
- Use Yorick to freeze him (and turn him blue!)
- Go to the Guardroom and use the (doubly enchanted) hammer on Yorick.
Yorick will explode, killing the 3 goblins. Beware! A shrapnel will kill you too!
Also, the various actions must be done in close succession. If you take too long the enchantments will fade, or Yorick will unfreeze.
Survivalist
This achievement is awarded for consuming 22 edible/drinkable items.
As you can see from the following list, there are more than 22 drinkable/edible items in the game. I’m not sure if duplicates count (e.g. two kanes, or two flowers), or if there is a difference between drinking water directly from its source, or drinking it through a bottle.
- Root (Entrance)
- Ice chip (Cellar)
- Water (Cavern Lake)
- Water (Waterfall)
- Water (Hideaway)
- Water (Sewer)
- Water (Wizard’s Den)
- Mushroom (x3, Wizard’s Den)
- Mud (Courtyard)
- Water (Courtyard)
- Moss (x2, Well)
- Flower (x2, Well)
- Deep Purple Vapor (Laboratory)
- White Vapor (Laboratory)
- Cyan Vapor (Laboratory)
- Fuchsia Vapor (Laboratory)
- Black Vapor (Laboratory)
- Dead Flowers (Battlements)
- White Teardrop Flower (Summit)
- Water (Landing #1, West Tower)
- Purple Potion (Prison)
- Meat (Strong Room)
- Bread (Strong Room)
- Kane (x2, Store Room)
- Vines (on stairs, Landing #3, South Tower)
- Roots (on door, Landing #4, South Tower
Weaponmaster
This achievement is awarded for using every weapon.
There are 9 unique weapons in the game. The Spear appears twice, but needs only be used once. There is a slingshot in the Antechamber, but it’s not considered a weapon and really has no use. Some of the weapons can be used on yourself, and thus commit suicide (marked in bold), but not all; the rest you can use to kill goblins with! I can’t be sure if the Staff of Ages counts, but if it does, its use is dictated by the story, so you don’t have to get out of your path for it.
- Dirk (starting weapon)
- Hammer (Dragon’s Nest)
- Spear (Dragon’s Nest)
- Sword (Crypt)
- Black Axe (Goblin Hole)
- Crossbow & 2x Bolts (Guardroom)
- Wooden Club (Guardroom)
- Mace (Guardroom)
- Spear (Guardroom)
- Bow (Watch Tower) & Arrow (Grotto)
- Staff of Ages (?)
(In the Dragon’s Nest you have to leave an item behind, because if you try to take it you’ll burn to a crisp. You need all the other items for the various achievements, so it’s best to leave the spear here and take the one in the Guardroom).
Lightbringer
This achievement is awarded for finding and lighting every torch.
As the difficulty of the game increases, the number of torches available decreases. So, you have to start working towards this achievement on Apprentice difficulty.
The Prison in inaccessible in Apprentice and Journeyman. Once you enter the room, you’re automatically transported at the Entrance at the Caves. In Master though, you encounter the Djinn and you can speak with him. The Djinn presents you with 5 riddles (one at a time of course), which you can answer. The riddles and their solutions are the following:
- “What goes in water red, yet comes out black?”
A red hot poker. Take the poker from the Banquet Hall and use the torch on it.
Reward: The Djinn’s good graces! 🙂 - “I have towns but no homes, lakes but no water, forests but no trees and mountains but no rocks. What am I?”
A map. Take the blank parchment from the Strong Room and use it on the globe in the Study.
Reward: 2 torches. - “I am the beginning of sadness and at the end of days. You cannot express happiness without me, yet I am in the midst of depression. I am always in distress, yet never in trouble. You may find me in the sun, but I am never out of shadows.”
The letter ‘S’. The description of the Root from the Entrance is: This length of root looks vaguely like the letter ‘S’. So, that’s the actual item you must give.
Reward: Purple potion (Banshee curse antidote). - “In comparison of a ghost am I. (And often filled, yet frequently empty.)”
A bucket. You can find one in the Well.
The second sentence is given to you if you ask the Djinn a second time. If anyone understood the first part of the riddle, please tell me too! Credit to Maddoc: The wordplay here is on pale (as a ghost), and pail, another word for bucket.
Reward: 5 torches. - “What force and strength cannot get through, I with gentle touch can do.”
A key. The particular key needed is found on the desk in Hollow #2, Upper Catacombs.
Why this key in particular, I couldn’t understand. Let me know if you did!
Reward: Death! (Special Death #10)
So, there are 28 torches you encounter while wandering around (on Apprentice mode) and 7 from the Djinn (on Master mode), for a total of 35 torches.
By picking 10 of them, you also complete the Torch Bearer achievement.
Axe-Wielder
This achievement is awarded for completing the quest for the Black Axe. Master mode.
This can (and should) be combined with the Avenger achievement.
You have to follow these steps:
- Knock out the goblin in the Grand Hallway and take the tunic.
- Knock out the goblin in the Small Corridor and take the helm.
- Knock out the goblins in the 1st West Tower Landing and take the shoulder armour.
- Wear these three items.
- Enter the Guardroom.
- Take the crossbow and bolts from the bench.
- Go to the Grotto and use the (loaded) crossbow on the cave, twice.
The goblins in the cave are now dealt with and you can enter the Goblin Hole. Pick up the Black Axe from the creature skull to earn this achievement.
Assassin
This achievement is awarded for wearing all of the wearable items.
- Helm (Entrance, under the root)
- Iron Shield (Dragon’s Nest)
- Dented Helm (Dragon’s Nest)
- Glasses (Dragon’s Nest)
- Wooden Shield (Crypt)
- Blindfold (Captive, Cavern Lake)
- Cloak (Wraith, Passage)
- Gauntlet (Well)
- Goblin Tunic (Grand Hallway)
- Goblin Helm (Small Corridor)
- Goblin Shoulder Armor (Landing #1, West Tower)
- Hat (Music Room, South Tower)
- Mask (1st half: in a Suit of Armour, Grand Hallway, 2nd half: Inner Sanctum)
Reaper
This achievement is awarded for experiencing all special deaths in the game. Master mode.
You can find more information on this achievement here.
Master Investigator
This achievement is awarded for finding 2 relics from another era and time.
To find these 2 relics you have to take the following steps:
- Learn Terakk spell, found in the Observatory.
- Use Terakk on the globe in the Study to open it.
- Take the scroll found inside, and learn the Exquish spell.
- Have a candle with you (can be found in Observatory and Library).
- Go to Pit (in Lower Catacombs).
- Remember to have your candle lit! (Use torch on candle).
- Use Exquish spell on your torch to extinguish it.
- In the complete darkness you will see a Hat appear. You have to look at it!
- Relight your torch using the (lit) candle from your inventory.
- Go to the Mine (in Upper Catacombs).
- Follow the same steps as above.
- A Badge will appear. Once again, you have to look at it.
edit: It occured to me, that in order for the two “relics” to appear, the only requirement is for the room to be dark. One way is as described above, by using the Exquish spell. But there’s a much simpler way actually: All you have to do is to carry with you a bottle of water (even the muddy water from the moat will do!) and use it on the torch. Bear in mind though, that by using the two spells with the first method, you also work towards the Wizard achievement.
Boon Companion
This achievement is awarded for appeasing your traveling companion with all his requests.
Taken from DraKonicSouL’s guide: Boon Companion ~ Achievement Guide.
To appease Yorick simply means to find certain items and use them on him. Or using Yorick on the items! 😛 Yorick makes a very specific remark each time. The items are:
- Coin (Antechamber, under the rug, or Strong Room).
- Female Skull (Grotto)
- Mushroom (Wizard’s Den).
- Book (“Cardas’ Rhymes”, 12th book, bottom row, Bookcase, Library)
- Water (Fountain on the wall, Landing #1, West Tower)
- Lit Pipe. You need two items:
- Pipe (Study)
- Dead Flowers (Battlement)
Put the flowers in the pipe, light it with your torch, and give it to Yorick.
Good Housekeeping
This achievement is awarded for tidying up the castle.
You can’t tidy up and clean the castle without a broom now, can you? 😀
You will find one in the Mirror Room, which you should take with you. You can then use the broom to clean various rugs and spider webs:
- The rug in the Antechamber.
- The rug in the Grand Hallway.
- The spider webs (x4) in the Laboratory.
- The rug in the Empty Chamber (You have to use Flumoris first, for the objects to appear).
- The rug in the Ornate Chamber.
Keep in mind that the spider webs have to also be burned for the Pyromaniac achievement; you should save before taking any action, so you can do both.
Harryhausen
This achievement is awarded for attempting to communicate with all skulls in the game.
There are a lot of skulls in the game and I’m not really certain which count as skulls and which not, so talk to all the skulls you encounter, and any item that seems skull-like. For some (especially those in the Catacombs) Yorick will make quite a few remarks (they are all old acquaintances!). I had the feeling that those skulls were more important, than others where there is no Yorick comment, but I could be totally wrong. Don’t forget all the skulls on the dais at the Entrance (includng the 3 glyph skulls), the Captive in Cavern Lake, the dead king in the Ornate Chamber and the Skull Door. I don’t know if the animal skull in the Well, or the huge animal skull in the Goblin Hole count too, but it’s no biggie to do those as well.
(Credit to Loliwo) The animal skull in the Goblin Hole counts and should be talked to.
Gotta Catch ‘Em All
This achievment is awarded for catching all elementals.
There are 5 Elementals in total:
- Ice Elemental (Cellar)
- Water Elemental (Waterfall)
- Fire Elemental (Study)
- Air Elemental (Keep Tower)
- Lightning Elemental (Battlement)
You’ll need them all during your normal play-through (on Master difficulty), so you don’t have to worry that you’ll miss any.
I don’t know if Lakmir also counts towards this achievement, because you also “capture” him at the end of the game, but even if he does, it’s a story-related action, so you don’t have to worry about it either.
Librarian
This achievement is awarded for reading every book.
Every scroll, parchment, or book you encounter you have to read! As most of them can also be burned, see the Pyromaniac achievement for more information on specific locations. Keep in mind, that in the Bookcase, in the Library, if you look at the books you just read the title, but if you use the books you read passages.
Pyromaniac
This achievement is awarded for burning every item that can be destroyed by fire.
Taken from karinms’s guide: Master Pyromaniac.
Items marked with an asterisk (*) are needed for other tasks (e.g. cleaning, spells, recipes) so be careful before burning. The game keeps track of the progress in a separate file, which isn’t connected with any particular play-through. So you can save, burn, and reload.

Seven Angry Dwarven Miners
This achievement is awarded for mining all crystals in the catacombs. Master or Journeyman mode.
There are 19 crystals in total, of which 4 you find, and 15 you have to mine. I guess the achievement refers to the latter 15 crystals. For completion’s sake, I list them all:
Crystals in italics can be found, not mined.

Signal the Castle

Other Achievements
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Master mode without killing any goblins.
As the description states, just don’t kill them! Knock them out, keep doing so when they reappear.
This achievement is awarded for picking up 200 items.
Pick up everything that can be picked up and you’ll be fine!
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in all three difficulty modes: Master, Journeyman, and Apprentice
Unfortunately this achievement is not stackable. This means that you have to complete the game at least 3 different times, once for every difficulty mode.
This achievement is awarded for collecting 10 torches.
Playing normally, you will encounter from 19 to 28 torches depending on the difficulty mode selected. If you still need help, which I pretty much doubt, see the Lightbringer achievement for specific torch locations.
This achievement is awarded for showing a mastery of the weather.
You get this achievement by clearing the sky, using the Placleer spell. See the Wizard achievement for more information.

Time related
The following achievements have to do with time management. You don’t have to worry much, the limit is quite lenient and there’s enough time to finish the game. The achievements are stackable (i.e. if you get Master, you automatically unlock the easier ones).
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Master mode in 1000 turns or less.
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Journeyman mode in 2000 turns or less.
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Apprentice mode in 2700 turns or less.

and Apprentice Healer (800 turns. Apprentice mode).
Iron mode related
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Master mode in one game session.
also: Journeyman Savior (in Journeyman mode),
and Apprentice Savior (in Apprentice mode).
One game session means that you can save/load the game, but you cannot quit the game, and relaunch it later.
This achievement is awarded for beating the game in Master mode without the use of hints.
also: Journeyman Paladin (in Journeyman mode),
and Apprentice Paladin (in Apprentice mode).
When speaking to Yorick he will give you hints, if you feel stuck. Refrain from doing so, and the achievement will be yours.
This achievement is awarded for winning the game on Ironman mode (no saving).
Master mode.
also: Journeyman Ironman (in Journeyman mode),
and Apprentice Ironman (in Apprentice mode).
Pretty much self-explanatory. 🙂
Since these 3 achievements have very specific requirements, it’s a good idea to go for them at the same time. Remember to be careful and not die! 😀 They are also stackable, meaning that any higher difficulty achievement you get automatically unlocks the lower level ones. So you can go straight for the Master difficulty, and unlock all 3 (or 6!) of them at once.
Protector of the Realm
This achievement is awarded for unlocking all other achievements.
I hope you’ve found this guide useful, and collected all the previous achievements! When you do, this final achievement will unlock! 🙂
