Shelter 2 - Mountains Guide for Shelter 2

Shelter 2 – Mountains Guide

Overview

So I bet you’ve bought or are thinking about getting the Mountains DLC to Shelter 2? You probably are wondering what dangers are now in your lynx’s world, or what new prey you can pounce? Well now, I can teach you about those. Welcome to the guide of Shelter 2: Moutains!

Introduction

Hello, reader! Welcome to my Shelter 2: Mountains guide!

Here, i’ll talk about and give tips on how to survive in the mountains, the various predators and prey you’ll encounter throughout the world, and other dangers or info that will help you survive with all four of your cubs!

This also acts as your spoiler warning! If you wish to experience what this game and it’s DLC have to offer, click off now! Although I assume this warning isn’t needed – this isn’t a new game by any means and most people probably wouldn’t click on a guide for something they didn’t want information on – you have been warned anyways!

I will also warn that this guide is in the process of being rewritten! Please excuse the grammatical and spelling errors for now; a new clean and (hopefully) better written version is on the way!

Now, onto the guide and into the mountains!

New Dangers

The first, arguably most important thing to worry about with the mountains addition; the added threats and dangers to you and your cubs. Bears, eagles, foxes, and forest fires are now worries, all of which can prove to be deadly, or simply terrifying, upon first encounter. Or every encounter.

However, you’re in luck! All of these threats, just like the original Lonesome Fog, starvation, and wolves, can be dealt with and you can walk away with four cubs still behind you! Each of these four dangers have very different ways of going about surviving them, but it is do-able!

Whether this is your first time playing, or you simply wish to avoid another forest fire catastrophe, (Don’t worry, I’m horrible with the fires too. Curse you, fires!) look no further, and good luck in your future generations!

Eagles

Almost always the first one you meet when you get Mountains, and from the first Shelter game, please welcome, Mr. Eagle!

The eagles become a huge pain when you get the DLC, but ultimately the game wouldn’t be the same without it. The eagles can appear every single area, so be on a look out for these nasty birds!

You know an eagle’s attacking when you hear different music start up (the one you hear during the first game in eagle attacks) followed by it’s cry. It’ll circle around you once or twice before swooping down to kidnap a cub. There are ways to protect your family, though. When you hear the music start up, one option is to stay completly still, not moving at all. I’ve heard of this working, and the eagle flys away. But it doesn’t always work. If this option fails, and the eagle grabs you cub, you can still save it. The eagle, because of the weight of the cub, will stay near the ground for a few seconds. During this short time spand, you have to run towards the eagle, and pounce on it like you would a elk. This will kill the eagle, save your cub, and make a diner for all four.

Another option is to run for cover. If you’re near a cave, you den, and a bunch of trees, run towards them. The eagle can’t get you in these places, but be careful, the trees don’t always work! Sometimes the eagle can still see you if you’re not covered enough! Also remember your cubs are a bit slower than you, so once you reach your cover, turn around and make sure each one is following. This also makes it easier to run after the eagle in case in gets a slower one.

The last option is for when it attacks near the rocky areas. You have to get your cubs near a more open space, away from the rocks. In this option, you HAVE to attack the eagle. You get into an open space so it’s easier to run after, and you won’t hit rocks, trees, or a cliff that stops you from getting your cub completly if the eagle goes over.

Another thing to take note in, is that after the “Life is hard.” cut-scene, when your cubs turn into “teenagers”, eagles can’t attack them anymore. They don’t even appear anymore. So just survive until then, and you won’t have to worry about eagles until your next generation. 🙂

Foxes

The fastest animal in the game, also the most annoying one, welcoming the fox family!

The foxes are annoying little beasts. They appear quite often, and can take away one of your cubs when you least expect it. You’re gonna have to pay extra attention when its winter, because their fur blends right in to the snow.

You can tell when a fox is following you when you hear loud tree branches snapping. When you hear them, stop, get all your cubs around you, and look around. If you have to, use your sense/smelling ability to find it. When you do take a step or two away from your cubs, keeping your eyes on the fox at all times. Do not hunt or run after anything when you hear twigs snapping, or else the fox will grab one while you’re away.

There are a few ways to get rid of a fox, similar to the eagle. One of the options is to, if your in an open area, wait until you have atleast a little more than half your energy, and for it to get a little close, about 5 lynxes away, then give chase, you can jump on it to kill, too, if you’re still a little bit far away from it. While this can work, and has for me, the fox is the fastest animal in the game, running a bit quicker than the elk, so chances are it’s going to out-run you. So only if you’re confident you have enough energy and it’s close enough, should you use this option.

Another option is to chase after it three times. I’ve heard of this working, but I haven’t tried it yet, so I’m unsure it it does. If it doesn’t, then you can chase it into a rocky area and it’ll most likely run into your lynx’s claws. Foxes can also be fed to your cubs, like the eagle. It feeds four as well.

Another thing you can try is jump up onto a platform. I’ve done this, and stayed up for a minute or two (I was looking around at the territory, but I also just caught a rabbit and didn’t want the fox to get it. I have no idea if they can jump up with you, but they have yet to jump up for when I play.), and when I went back down, the fox was gone. I’m unsure if this always works, for I’ve only tried it once and I don’t think anyone else has done it. If the fox is still there after you do this, my apologies for giving you wrong information!

The last way to get rid of a fox, most commonly used in survival mode, is to use your cubs at bait. Crazy, yes, but stamina restores way slower in survival mode then regular mode, so you can’t chase after it a bunch of times. After the fox grabs a cub, it’ll be slower, so you can catch up to it. Once again, jumping can kill it, and save your cub.
Foxes share another thing with the eagle, and that thing is that it appears in more than just the mountain area. Foxes are known to spawn in the Main area (Big Tree area), and Artic foxes can appear in the Tundra (Snowflake area). I have not heard or encountered them in the Lake territory, but I can’t say for sure they won’t attack there.

Another thing similar to eagles, foxes can not harm your cubs after the “Life is hard.” cut-scene, and do not appear after that. So you won’t have to worry about a sudden yowl from your cubs while hunting anymore! 🙂

Bears

The scariest animal to encounter in the game, almost being as fast as you, and the last predator on our list, please welcome, the bears!

I screenshoted and circled the bear in this picture, because he blends in so well with his surroundings! The bear is the animal that everyone is terrified of, the animal nobody wants to see close up versions of, so its often difficult to learn about the bear. But I’ve learned quite a lot about them, so don’t worry, I’ve got ya covered 😉

There are two types of bears in the game; the Brown bear, and the Polar bear. While both seem terrifying to go anywhere near, and it seems like you should run in the opposite direction immediately, they actually are almost harmless! So if you happen to find one, don’t worry; I’ll teach about everything you can do.

Bears, because they blend in with their territory so well, are mostly found while using the scent/smelling ability that your lynx has. Don’t panic when you see it, because it probably can’t see you. Only if the bear stands up on two legs, and starts roaring, has it spotted you. When this happens, forget about your cubs, just do one thing; run!

There are two ways to get rid of bears, the first one being to run. The bears, while pretty fast, are still a little slower than you, so if you run long enough, the bear will give up, and stop giving chase. To signal this, he’ll roar. Keep running for a second or two though, to be sure. Your cubs will appear, running towards their mother, in a moment’s notice.

Now I know you’re thinking, “but won’t the bear attack my cubs if I run?” Well, guess what? The bear doesn’t attack your cubs! What a relief, right? The reason you still have to get away from the bear, even if it can’t attack your cubs, is that it can attack YOU. If that happens, when your lynx wakes up, one or two cubs will be starving to death, so its best to not get caught by a bear!

The other way to escape, is by jumping onto a platform. The bear can’t reach you here. It’ll give a roar, then run away. Safe once again because of those platforms, haha!

Bears can appear in all areas execpt the Main Area (Big Tree. Polar bears in the Tundra, and Brown in Lake and Tundra. I haven’t heard of an attack or encounter in the starting area, nor have I seen them. Now, let’s start talking about the new prey. 🙂

Prey

Another thing the Mountains DLC adds, is another type of prey. It’s a bit harder to catch than a rabbit, being a bit faster than it, but it’s not impossible. It’s the only new animal added that can’t attack you or your cubs, and is a lot more common than the predators. You often see people catching them in playthroughs/walkthroughs, the only new piece of prey, please welcome, the Grouse!

[I cant find any pictures of the Grouse, sorry haha!]

Grouse

The Grouse is a bird of prey in the DLC, and is often seen being chased or hunted in playthroughs, and mistakenly called Pheasants. The Grouse are found in only the Mountains, along with the Pheasents, which appear in every area besides the Tundra. But they usally spawn in forest like areas, so you’ll have to keep a look out for bears and foxes. You don’t want to run right into a bear’s back!
Male grouse

You’ll have to chase after them when you see them, and be careful for how close you get, because they spot you a lot sooner than rabbits. They’ll start to fly away after about five seconds, then they start to lift off the ground. You can jump up, like an elk, and catch them out of the sky. They feed three cubs, just like a Pheasant.

Forest Fires

One of the scariest experiences in the game, a forest fire is one way to quickly loose all cubs. They usually happen in the Mountain area, but are know to happen in the Lake territory (Three Trees area), and the Main area (Big Tree area).

Forest fires, luckily, aren’t very common. They only start in certain areas in each map, such as in the Main area, they only start in a meadow near the Mountains entering area, and where the Fox skull is. If you do encounter a forest fire, then don’t panic right away, there is a way or two to get away from them.

Both ways, though, invlove running, so be careful about your cubs. A forest fire is about to start when the sky turns dark as if a wolf pack or the “blob” are attacking. Your lynx will start to hiss instead of meow, and then lightening will strike down. The music will change as well, and if it sounds familiar, then that’s because it’s the track “Into The Fire” from the original Shelter game.

When the sky starts turning dark, RUN! Be careful that you don’t run right into where the fire starts, though, the fire might start up right under your lynx’s paws! I’ve heard this can still hurt you cubs, so be careful when you run. Also note that, like the blob, your cubs may stop and freeze in fear, pick it up and carry it, or pick it up, and drop it, and they’ll start to run around again.

If you don’t manage to get very far, weather it’s because of your worry for the kids, or because the game went into complete lag mode when the flames started, then don’t completely panic. The first time I ran into one, no cubs managed to die or even get hurt!…Maybe they almost got set on fire once or twice, but they lived. The reason for this is beacuse the fire only goes until a certain point, then it stops and doesn’t go any farther, and will be put out when it rains in a couple seconds. This usually seems to happen near cliffs, where you have no-where to run to, it’ll simply surround you instead of burning everyone alive.

That’s a Rap!

Hey, would ya look at that, you reached the end! Hopefully I taught you about anything you needed to learn about, from foxes to forest fires. If you have more questions about anything, go ahead and ask in the comments, I don’t bite! I’m so sorry if something’s spelled wrong or the grammar gets bad at one point! I spent around five days on this, and while I checked it over once or twice, I might have missed something. It probably doesn’t help that I’m really tired from waking up real early today, haha! Anyway, thank you all so much for reading, and I hope I helped you! See all you lynxes later!
