Overview
Version 0.5These are my favorite Custom role lists, and I’ll be adding some from other creators I’ve stumbled across. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed testing them. I strongly encourage you to check out the notes for each one as some contain strategies that are essential for effective gameplay. Some of these role lists are variants of other popular game modes and role lists, and I have listed them as such here. If a game mode is listed as original, that’s because to the best of my knowledge, it is. If you find one like it somewhere else, either someone saw mine and liked it so much they claimed it as theirs, or it’s one hell of a coincidence (Or maybe great minds think alike after all!)Coven Role Lists Vampires: Cloak and Dagger – Very popular game mode that pits the town against an infestation of vampires that makes for a long, suspenseful game of intrigue and drama. Insane Asylum – Completely insane, highly chaotic gameplay where the Serial Killer reigns supreme and everyone needs more than a little luck to make it to the end. Diagnosis: Murder! – Campy hospital drama crime thriller variant on the popular “Salem Hospital” role list. No relation to the 80’s-90’s daytime television show of the same name.Coming Soon Classic role lists.
Vampires: Cloak and Dagger
Mayor, VH, Invest, TS, TP, RT, Vamp, Vamp, NE, NE, NK, NK, NC, Any, Any
Salem, 1692. A rural, puritanical village built like a house of cards on the shaky foundation of unwarranted confidence in manifest destiny. There can be no better a hunting grounds for our kin. Don’t let the porcelein exterior of our sanctimonious cattle fool you. They are rife with sin, and they grow fat and helpless as they settle down into this new world. Their self-righteousness is an insufficient veil to conceal their corruption, and it is time we dine upon their corruption and share a bit of our own.
This is bar-none my most popular game mode, and the first one I ever made. This one is completely original, and I’m extremely proud of it. I can always get a willing group of players for this one, which is not something I can say for most game modes, be they mine or anyone else’s.
Vampires: Bloodbath
Mayor, Jailor, VH, Vig, LO, Vampire, Vampire, NE, NE, NE, NB
Can’t get 15 players together? Try this mini-variant.
Mayor
On first glance, Mayor seems useless. After all, as soon as you reveal, vamps will descend on you like a ComicCon mob on a Star Wars prequel trilogy fan, right? For this reason, I think it’s safest only to reveal strategically, or late game. Remember that town will know if you have turned vampire by the number of votes you give (Mayor=3, Vamp=1) and if they’re smart, once you’ve revealed, they’ll check you. Also, to the cloak and dagger aspect of the game, one strategy for the mayor is to get bitten in late game and turn on town for a particularly dastardly win.
Vampire Hunter
You’re the star of the show, but don’t get cocky. Early game, you need to try and keep your identity a secret (or some crafty vampires might try and trick town into lynching you.) Of course, you also need to dodge the Neutral Killers. If you can manage that, then it’s up to you to figure out who the vamps are and nail them at night. If you don’t kill vamps at night, Town doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. Pay careful attention to Vampire chat, and remember, they know you’re reading, so while they may slip up, they may fake it to trick you, too. The game is yours to make or break. NOTE: If you’re particularly crafty, and like to be prepared, read the tips for the Vampires as well, because part of it involves you.
Investigator
Your role isn’t much different than in any game mode here, really. More than anything, you need to find those vamps and get them hung as quickly as possible. There is a chance that Jesters can give you false results, but in my estimation, you need to risk it to stop the vamps from getting numbers as quickly as possible.
Town Support
(Escort, Mayor, Medium, Retributionist, or Transporter.)
If you’re Escort, you pretty much just want to try and find the NK’s. Be careful not to trip up your VH, and if you’re not sure, you may want to stay home early game to be safe. Medium, you’re mostly just vampire food, but once in a blue moon you’ll get a good tip from the dead, or hear something from dead vampires that think they can speak free and clear. Retributionist, you’re the backup in case an NK drops the VH. Rezz him immediately. Once the NK’s are all gone though, you may want to go ahead and rezz whatever you can to keep the town : vamp ratio in the black. Best choice for this is investigator, or bring back the mayor for a surprise clutch vote. Transporter, you’re probably the only hope the mayor has for survival. If you’re particularly crafty, and have the option, trans the mayor with the VH for a special surprise for your bloodsucker friends.
Town Protective
(Bodyguard, Crusader, Doctor, or Trapper)
Your first instinct is going to be to protect the Vampire Hunter, but believe it or not, he’s the safest piece on the board. My advice is to protect the Mayor, if at all possible. You run the same risks as always, if you’re Crusader or Bodyguard, so be very careful. Every member of Town is crucial to success. Crusader killing Transporter, for instance, can be devastating, but late-game this doesn’t matter as much because Transporter probably already has fangs.
Random Town
I’m not going to run over all the possible roles you can get here, but you may want to review the tips for the rest of Town, because some of them will probably apply to you as well.
Vampire (x2)
You could start with 3 or even or – if you’re crazy-lucky – 4 vampires (Because of NC and Any roles being available) but this is rare. REMEMBER: THERE IS A VAMPIRE HUNTER. THEY CAN HEAR YOU AT NIGHT. This is the number one folly of Vampires. You can use this to your advantage if you’re very clever by leading them to false conclusions or faking being a new vamp that doesn’t know VH can hear you. This leads me to the second most important insight: Choose your Vampire candidates wisely! Vamps have to be smart. One dumb Vampire can bring the whole clan down. Your best picks are Townies that clearly have sharp strategies. You want to drain the Town’s talent. It makes them weaker and you smarter. Also, Townies are just psychological averse to letting go of their best team players, and are more likely to miss signs that they may not be on the team anymore. Remember that NK’s are just as much a threat to you as they are to Town. Finally remember that 9 times out of 10, you’re going to have to win by lynching the final Towny, and that may be a VH or the Mayor. If you get majority, and you have enough members to suffer losses from the VH while you lynch whoever’s left, you may want to vote the mayor off FIRST. If you want to outvote the Mayor, you’re going to have to have every Vamp on board for it, and you’re all going to have to click fast! Every single Vampire needs to vote up the Mayor the moment the discussion timer is up, and if anyone hesitates or doubleclicks, cancelling their vote, it could be toast for everyone. Because of this, you may not want to try this while VH is alive because you can’t discuss it the night before to make sure everyone is on board.
Neutral Evil (x2)
(Executioner or Jester.)
Can’t make it too easy for town! That’s where you come in. Just do your thing. Don’t be too obvious, though. Remember that the VH will know pretty quick if you’re not what you say you are. Jesters, you’re in a particularly good position if the VH dies, but the invest is still around. To be honest, a good play for a Jester is to sit around and do nothing all game. Either they lynch you late game, or you get bit by a Vampire and join their side. Either way, you’re good.
Neutral Killing (x2)
(Arsonist, Serial Killer, or Werewolf.)
All three of these play about the same as in any game mode. And you have the added benefit of being immune to the main evil faction in this game. Just remember, you may have a vested interest in keeping the VH alive as long as possible because your biggest threat is getting hit by a Vampire and then having their whole gang trying to lynch you. If you’ve been dinged at night, those who are the most zealous about lynching you are likely Vampires, and you can use that knowledge to your advantage.
Neutral Chaos
(Pirate, Plaguebearer or Vampire)
For Vampire, see above. For Pirate and Plaguebearer, this plays about the same as any other game mode.
Any (x2)
The only roles I can really say anything about here are Mafia and Coven, which are absolutely the worst two roles to get in this game mode. Odds are, you’re going to be solo, and literally no one in the game wants you there. Your odds of surviving to the end are astronomically small. So think of this as Challenge Mode for you. But hey, maybe you’ll get lucky. After all, a Medusa could fare pretty well.
Insane Asylum
Jailor, Doc, Doc, Mayor, Psy, Psy, Psy, SK, Jest, Jest, Jest, NE, NE, NB, NB
The inmates are running the asylum! Who’s a doctor and who’s a patient anymore? You’re beginning to lose your grasp on reality, and you need to regain control of the Asylum fast, because there’s a killer on the loose!
This one is a conundrum. Something like half of every random ToS player hates two roles with a passion: Jester and Psychic. And the entire point of this role list is to pit Psychics and Jesters against each other, with a Serial Killer running loose! So as you can imagine, a lot of people run for the hills when they see this build, which is a shame, because most people who give it a chance absolutely love it. It’s highly chaotic but also results in extremely satisfying wins if you can manage it.
Note: The first people think when they play this game is “What if Jailor gets SK on the first night?” but with the Doctors and Executioners in play, it’s highly possible that the SK will fail his first kill anyway (and he may want to refrain from killing just to screw with Town). This happens far more often than the Jailor getting that 1/14 success right off the bat, and often results in Town lynching a Jester or one of their own.
Jailor
You’re the warden. You are Town’s only weapon apart from lynching, which is very dangerous in this particular role list, given all the Jesters and Exes running around. You have the unenviable responsibility of determining fact from fiction, and Heaven help you if you get it wrong. If you can manage to determine who’s staff, and who’s insane, and cull the Jesters and Executioners a bit, the Psychics may be able to hone in on the real killer: The SK.
Doctor (x2)
If the Jailor is Town’s sword, you are Town’s only shield. Pay close attention to the psychic claims and do your best. This game is more luck than skill in the early game, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t heal early and often.
Mayor
You’re the administration. You call the shots, which will make you a target. You cannot be healed, so your best option is to keep your role a secret for as long as possible. In a Town full of Jesters, getting enough Guilty votes to hang someone is going to be difficult, and you’re there to step in when Town needs that extra juice. Your timing is crucial. And you will need more than a little luck.
Psychic (x3)
Early game, most people in Town will just want to put you down, so unless you need to jump in as a counterclaim, you may want to keep your visions to yourself until you start to notice a pattern, like names popping up more than once in evil visions. You may feel a little useless at first in such a chaotic game, but you are Town’s only eyes here, and the only hope of determining who’s good and who needs to be put down. If Town gets any valuable information at all, it’s going to come from you. But remember, the Serial Killer is looking for this information as well, so be careful how and when you share it.
Serial Killer
You’re the star of the show! The facility is on lockdown and you’re out of your straight jacket and having the time of your life! Sure, there’s only one of you against all of them, but you’re not gonna sweat it. You know the staff here is helpless and weak, and this is just like stabbing fish in a barrel. The whole institution is your margarita, and you’re gonna kick back and sip it on your special day! Take your time, you’ve got all the time in the world. You may even want to refrain from killing the first night – it may cause the Jailor to think he’s got an early win and lynch a Towny or Jester. Remember, they don’t know who you are, so you want to focus on the main threat, the staff, for as long as possible. The other patients are there to provide you cover, so try and make sure the people you’re gutting are the people in power first. After all, you can always come back for the patients later. You don’t want to risk lynching Jesters, but you may want to once or twice if only because Town may be watching for that innocent vote to nail down your identity. Best of luck to you on your reality vacation!
Jester
You’re criminally insane, and your options are wide open. You can pretend to be any of the staff here, except perhaps the Jailor or Mayor. And remember: your goal of getting lynched may seem like an uphill battle, but that’s pretty much the case for everyone else here as well.
Neutral Evil (x2)
(Executioner or Jester.)
You’ve got it out for one particular staff member. Maybe they weren’t kind to you when they were in a position of power. Maybe they were inconsiderate and didn’t take your feelings into account. Or maybe the elves in the basement told you they needed to go. Whatever the case, you’re going to make sure they have a particularly wretched day here in Crazy Town. And you’re in a particularly sweet position too, because you’re immune to SK, and even if you fail at your goal, you’re still just a joker at heart. Have fun, for your task is as relaxed as it gets in Insane Asylum!
Neutral Benign (x2)
(Amnesiac, Survivor, and Guardian Angel.)
Some of the unfortunate souls in this institution aren’t quite as criminally insane as the rest of the patients. Or maybe you were just visiting when all this went down. Regardless of the reason you’re here, you might as well make the best of it. Survivors, you might want to keep your cards close to your vest, and help town lynch as many people as possible. After all, a swift resolution to this crisis gets you out of danger the surest and swiftest way. So you may want to risk Guiltying a Jester to accomplish that. It also helps to take suspicion off of you a bit. Guardian Angel, your work is cut out for you. Your strategy will be more or less the same as any game mode, but that doesn’t mean it will be as easy.
Diagnosis: Murder!
Sheriff, Doc, Doc, Doc, TP, TI, Poisoner, PM, PB, Amne, Amne, NE, NE, NB, NB
Doctor Detective is working tirelessly to heal his patients during the worst epidemic in Salem’s history. But something’s starting to look a little fishy about these cases. Upon careful investigation, the Doctor Detective has determined that these illnesses have one common thread. Diagnosis: Murder!
Salem Hospital[town-of-salem.wikia.com] is a very popular role list among Coven players right now, and it boggles my mind. There are so many Amnesiacs in this list, they basically have controlling interest in the game. Whatever team the Amnesiacs decide to support is going to win, let’s face it. And that’s not particularly interesting to me. So I took this concept and added some balance and variation, while keeping the same thematic elements. We still have Amnesiacs, but they aren’t quite the deciding factor any more. I also added a psych ward to the hospital (NE’s) and a couple of neutral patients (NB’s), and beefed up town a bit. To me it makes for a faster, more interesting game than the original.
Town has a strong starting position here, but be careful; one wrong move and the tide can turn against you fast and hard. And all the while, the clock is ticking with the Plaguebearer out there. Once Pestilence pops up, Town’s time is up and will die if it doesn’t act fast.
Hardcore Hospital
Doc, Doc, Doc, TI, TK, Poisoner, PM, Amne, Amne, NC, NC, NE, NE, NB, NB
This is much harder for Town, and instead of PB, you’re going to get two of PB, Vamp, and Pirate. TK will often give Town a Vampire Hunter, so don’t feel too bad for Town. This is a much more hectic game any way you slice it, and always exciting.
Sheriff
You’ve heard there’s a Coven murdering patients and doctors, and you’re out to find the Poisoner and Potion Master, and take them out as quickly as possible.
Doctor (x3)
If you’re lucky, the Poisoner won’t get the Necronomicon, and you can cure those who get poisoned, which will keep you busy enough.
Town Protective
(Bodyguard, Crusader, Doctor, or Trapper)
Unless you get Doctor, you’re able to give the town a little teeth. This plays pretty standard, and it’s totally worth dying, as a Bodyguard, to take out one of the visiting evils in this version, especially since there’s so few of them.
Town Investigative
(Investigator, Lookout, Psychic, Tracker, Sheriff, or Spy)
This is a wild card, and the better role you get here, the better Town is likely to do all around. Don’t take this position lightly, because you’re going to serve a crucial role in helping Town locate the bad guys.
Poisoner
You’re going to feel a little useless at first because your kills aren’t going to land. Town will have plenty of time to cure your poisons and they will likely do so. There’s a 50/50 chance you will be awarded the Necronomicon, and the game will radically shift into coven’s favor if you do, so as usual, protect your identity as best as you can.
Plaguebearer
Plaguebearer plays the same all the time. You may want to hit people who call for Docs at night, because they may be visited by all the doctors at once, but you only need to do that once or twice to get all the doctors. And if coven seems to be on to you, you may want to claim that you’ve been poisoned if you’re going clutch. Just remember, coven’s going to know you’re lying if you do this, so if they don’t already suspect you of being PB, your best hope is if they think you’re a Jester looking for extra protection.
Neutral Evil (x2)
(Executioner or Jester.)
Is there any bad way to play these roles? You’re there to cause chaos. If you’re Jester, counterclaiming Town Investigative is a good way to get suspicion onto you, but your biggest challenge is showing as NS to Sheriff. Just keep everyone talking. Ask lots of questions in chat. If Town is focused, your job gets 10x harder, but if no one can read chat fast enough to keep up, they’ll stay off-balance and that’s good for you. Executioner, you may want to hurl an accusation at someone who ISN’T your target first to throw suspicion off of you (as being single-mindedly against one person) and then wait a night or two to go after your real target. Town confusion is also a boon to you, so work with the other evils to achieve this. A quiet chat can lead to a productive Town, so stop that before it begins.
Amnesiac
Alright, so you still have some considerable power to change the fate of this game, so in my view, the best thing you can do is take over any Coven roles that drop. The evils are the underdog in this variant, and I always root for the underdog. Ultimately, the choice is yours. But if I were you, I’d take more pride in a Coven assist, anyway.
Neutral Benign (x2)
(Amnesiac, Survivor, and Guardian Angel.)
Every hospital needs patients. Survive and thrive as best as you can. Guardian Angels, I always recommend saving your protects as long as you can. If your target dies, you become a Survivor anyway. If you die, you can still do your job from the grave. So don’t feel rushed to use up your protects. Even if your target is poisoned. Chances are, a Doctor will take care of him. You’re in a hospital after all. And nothing is as satisfying when Pestilence shows up as having two protects. Hell, your target may even BE Pestilence, and those protects can make it impossible for Town to hang him.
