Starbound: How to begin and how to prosper

Overview

I will be taking you through all the basics of Starbound and how to prosper in the early-game. If you enjoy please rate and if you really enjoy, please add as a favourite or follow me.

0: Warning!

This guide was made for the 2014 version of the game. Non eo fthis information is relevent anymore unless you’re playing the old game. As it stands I have no interest in reamking the guide, nor updating it. Rather I plan to leave this guide up just in case one dude three years from now wants to try the 2014 game. But yeah, if you’re playing any version past “Angry Koala” I believe, then this guide wont help you at all.

1:Welcome!

Hello, this is my first guide for Starbound. In this guide I will be taking you through all the basics from your first planet to the first boss. Without further to do, let’s begin!

2: Making a Character

THe first thing you do in the game is you make a character. You can choose from a Human, Apex, Floran, Hylotl, Glitch, and an Avian. It dosnt really matter witch race you make your character, but there are small stat boosts when you wear a full set of armour: ( Note that these abilities are a W.I.P., and might not even get added. But they are planned, so I’m including it.)

*Human: Allows you to carry more items. (Which might change)
*Apex: Allows you to jump higher, and maybe run faster.
*Floran: Allows you to convert sunlight to extra energy.
*Glitch: Allows you to mine faster.
*Hylotl: Allows you to breathe underwater and swim faster.
*Avian: Allows you to glide

Just for fun, I made myself an Avian.

2.1 Your new ship!

So you begin the game in a broken down spaceship, and you have a little pop-up. Basically this is your first quest! you have to get next to the shiplocker and hit “E”. Oh, by the way, you use the WASD keys to move. after you activate the ship locker, you get the…….MATTER MANIPULATER!!!!! Ok, it isn’t as good as it sounds. it is basically a wimpy axe and pick. You than get the quest “Shop Class”, Where you need to beam down to the planet. See you there!

2.2: Your planet

When you beam down to the planet, you will find a host of creatures, some passive, and some hostile. The only way to figure out if a creature is good or or not is to literally go up to them. I know it goes against every law of video games, but that is the only way to tell what AI they have.

Anyway, To complete “Bench Making”, you have to cut down several trees with the Matter Manipulator by holding left-click. Afterwords you get the quest “Food Fight”, in which you need to cook “Raw Alien Meat” over a campfire. You used to have to make a bow to get meat, but now it just randomly drops from enemys when killed. Don’t worry, if your a vegitarian you can just throw it away and plant some crops instead.

2.3: Mini Bosses

Un-doubtedly in your space travels, you wil come across mini-bosses. They are actually pretty tough in the beginning and dont feel ashamed if you have to cheat like this:
Anyways, when you kill a mini boss, they will drop pretty good weapons, unless you get a “crappy wooden shield” like I did. 🙁

2.4: Out of the Frying Pan…

Basically, now you have got to make a furnace to smelt some ore. Everything should be fairly easy to get, unless you have a lava planet. other wise you can have one of these!

After words you have to get some Iron to make an anvil. Once again this should be easy, but only if you have caves around, otherwise enjoy mining a mine! Once this is done you have to go and smelt it. Or, like me, spelunk until you find a chest with some in it. 😀

3: First Contact

You heard the quest, time to get a distress beacon and use it. In case you didnt know with the forshadowing, this is the first boss. You should have Iron armour by this point and a bow/gun. If you need an easier way, just make an underground room, with a 1-block thick hole to the surface and keep shooting out of it. Un fortunetly i dont have any pictures because they didn’t save. 🙁

EDIT: The pictures DID save, but it took ~a day, so here they are!

4: The End

So there you have it, the first part of Starbound! There is a lot more gameplay, structures, and just in general stuff I didn’t go into, but that is for another time. If I get over 100 views or 5 favourites i’ll make a guide for the second part of Starbound. So until next time, Peoplez.

Oh my Jizus….almost 5000 views?!?!?!?! (just over halfway to nine thousand?)
What sweet spaceship flavoured blasphemy is this?

as a thanks…something new…something fresh…somethi- you saw where this was going. Enjoy.
I’m sooooooo original

Etc 1. How to get guns.

Ok, this is a bit late, but I forgot that you guys need some gunz. There are only two ways to get guns that I know of. BTW, this section came to pass by Fifertas reminding me, so thank him.

1. Find an Avian airship

“Squidward, the sky had a baby!” It did indeed, but instead of a ghost ship, it’s an avian airship. It is actually a really cool base if needed. Anyway, you can find a gun merchant in the front portion of the ship, you can find out who he is by if he’s not holding a gun.

And a rare drop from avian temple guards. Guns are sometimes found in floran prisons, human prisons, human bunkers, and apex labs. I’ve never seen it, but you can get a crossbow from glitch guards too.

Etc.2 Weather

5/24/14 Ok, so I found out that some planets have weather, which make them awesome! So, I’m going to post a picture of EVERY new weather I find.

star rain

dust storm

Thunder fog

the damage of a meteor shower aftermath.

There is also Acid rain, it harms you whenever it hits you. but I dont have pictures of it. Sorry!

Steamers who contributed

Some awesome people who helped me remember stuff or even learn in the comments.

Fifertas: Made the gun section a reality.

Darg: Told me some ways to get gunz.

Spacegeek54: Told me about meteorites, If only I could find them…
