Stuck in Steam Overlay bug fix guide for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution

Stuck in Steam Overlay bug fix guide

Overview

This is a guide on how to get yourself unstuck from the Steam Overlay without having to close the game or restart your computer.

What is the Steam Overlay?

By pressing Tap+Shift you will be able to open the steam overlay. It is fairly self explanatory and completely irrelevant to the guide, especially since you probably already know what it is.

What is this glitch?

The Steam Overlay can be very buggy when it comes to some games and Dawn of War 2 is unfortunately one of them.
The bug is fairly self explanatory, when turning on the Steam Overlay there is a chance that the mouse pointer might stop registering and make it completely impossible to turn off the overlay. (Hotkey doesn’t work).
While in this state the mouse pointer will keep it’s ingame appearance.

I’m unsure of what exactly triggers it, but It has happened to me during cutscenes and at the victory screen. Be mindful of this if you are listening to a podcast.

Why is this a problem? Just CTRL+ALT+Delete.

While I’m sure this game has autosaves, I’m not about to risk losing my save data because of annoying bug.
Especially if I’ve just finished an Eldar mission. Honestly screw the Eldar.

How to fix.

1. Press CTRL+ALT+Delete and open the Windows Task Manager.
2. Find GameOverlayUI.exe, right click and click End Process.

3. If you can’t Alt+Tab back into the game right click on the game icon at the bottom and select it and wait.

If this doesn’t work, press CTRL+ALT+Delete and close the game instead. Emperor protect you if you didn’t save your campaign.

Meme

Most important of all.
Remember to sing the hymn of cogitator maintenance during all steps of this guide.
Praise the Omnissiah.
