Project Zomboid Guide

Surviving the Project for Project Zomboid

Surviving the Project

Overview

A general guide to help anyone to get decent loot, decent base and a few good locations to get you started before things start to get a little messy 🙂 (This guide is currently for build 32)

Character Creation

You’re going to start off in the Survival mode and select Muldraugh KY.

When choosing a character pick Electrician/Lumberjack/Engineer this will help later to keep food preserved or to make your weapon of choice an axe.

The Traits will be as follows.

Negative

High Thirst (once you get carpentry up this will no longer be a problem)
Restless Sleeper (For 6 points a little extra sleep never hurt anyone)
Slow Healer (If you, like me and never get injured then this won’t be a problem)
Thin Skinned (Same as before, don’t take risks)
Hearty appetite (I’ll show you how to lv farming so this is not a problem)
Prone to illness (might get sick or catch a cold not a problem just don’t get bitten)
Hemophobic (If you need first aid you will most likely be panicked anyway)
Weak Stomach (Make sure to cook all food and boil all water, keep risk to a minim)

Positive

Dextrous (can help when needing to switch between weapons)
Lucky (Extremely useful for finding axes, seriously crazy)
Eagle Eyed (is extremely helpful preventing getting surprised)
Fit (Will help getting away from pesky zombies)
Organised (Will increase all storage at your base)
Strong (This is your bread and butter with your axeman; you can take almost anything with this)

Side note Lumber jack has an extra 4 points so if you chose then take on an extra perk or get rid of another.
If you find yourself getting bit or scratched often then lose eagle eyed, Organised and thin skinned then use the points left to buy thick skinned. It would surprise me if you ended up with a bite having lucky as well.

Getting Started

Ok you have your character and you have just started in your own house, you start hearing noises from outside and you’re getting a little worried. First things first search the house, check the kitchen and hope you get a kitchen knife (butter knife still works) this is one hit kill when you’re up close so great for 1 on 1. If lucky has already given you a pistol then this will help while getting to your base. When you move from house to house take only essentials (4 bowls, 1 pot, all food, anything gardening related and any weapons). Anything other than these I believe is not as important yet.

Ok so you checked a few houses your character has a heavy load and you wondering what to do. No matter where you started in the world follow the road North-West until you get to a high way.

You will need to skip almost everything as we will come back for all of this. You’re going to follow the high way up and if you pass a motel you’re going the right way.

Follow it all the way up until you see a 2 story building behind a line of trees on your right hand side. This is a warehouse full of amazing stuff and we will go there in a few just leave the highway and follow the side path then follow the road up again.

When you get to a corner in the road follow the dirt road through the gap in the trees.

Then you want to go up following the brown dirt road.

The path will split again and you want to take a right.

straight after that follow the road until you get to corn fields. Now keep walking up from the corn fields and make yourself familiar with your surroundings because this is your new base.

Please take the time to not break a window or wreck the house as you will need all of them if you got attacked. There are a lot of windows you can open if you can get through the doors and remember you can keep trying to open the window until your character stops preforming the action so just click open and leave them until they open it or stop suddenly.

Now just raid the house, get comfortable and start to organise your house so that you know where everything is. Later in the game please have an escape bag ready in the kids room with the bunk beds. If your house gets attacked you can just walk off the side of the house and make a run for it you might get a broken ankle but at least your still alive.

This bag should have First aid kit, Axe, Shotgun/pistol with 1-2 boxes of ammo, food that does not expire (beef jerky etc.), some bath towels in case it’s raining when you have to do this a lighter and the rest is up to you. This bag could be the difference between staying alive or joining your friends knocking on the door. Work on this through the game there is no major rush at the start.

Building your Fortress

So you have your base now it’s time to start stockpiling resources until you can become self-sufficient. Remember that warehouse I told you about, it’s time to pay it a visit. Take one small food item after you have ate, a water bottle, one gun which is loaded, one melee weapon, your bag on your back and 2 ripped sheets because you just never know. Make your way back and kill off most of the single zombies around the bottom right hand side, always have a way to leave a building you’re trying to loot. There are 4 doors and 2 windows so if they are all locked and won’t let you in break a window and run to the bottom right of the screen and go loot some houses today instead.

Inside there are mountains of boxes filled with essentials for survival, always clear out all zombies before looting. Take everything but the paint (this will take a few trips) then take the paint last (again more than one trip) all this will be helpful throughout the game.

If you were lucky enough to get a watering can, trowel, and seeds you’re lucky enough to start farming. If you got a saw and an axe congrats you can start carpentry. Take the time to get these skills up as you need these 2 to keep you alive.

Carpentry and its Benefits

When starting your carpentry it might seem a bit time consuming at first so if you see any carpentry guides please take them they will make life so much easier for you in the long run. You’re going to want to have the following items to try level your skills to help build up your fortress.

Axe (Chop down trees to get logs)
Saw (This will change logs into planks)
Hammer (Used to make anything carpentry related)
Nails (Same as the hammer)

With these you can spend some time increasing your levels. When you get your carpentry up enough you can make a self-sustaining base that you will not have to leave ever.

From level 1 to level 3

You’re going to be spending all your time barricading your windows, unbaricading and barricading them again. This is something that has to be done so get grinding. Please just be careful as carpentry will attract zombies and it could become swarmed. So take your time to check and see if any crowds are starting to make their way over to you. I normally take a walk around the farm before completing any work just to be safe.

After a couple of levels you will want to start putting some time into increasing your storage capacity in different areas maybe take out all excess beds etc.

In the end you want to build a 2 story wall around the whole base with staircases up to look out towers with rope ladders to enter or exit your base. This will prevent any zombies coming to wreck your house.

Screenshots were taken from the multiplayer server and is not my own work.

Work in Progress

Please note this guide is a work in progress so please feel free to suggest ideas. I will be adding a Farming guide and I will keep adding to this while playing the game. I will also be putting up screenshots to help with directions etc.
