Overview
This Bible (afterwards referred to as “it”) is meant to describe the unwritten rules and beliefs that govern the behavior of the MW3 online players. It is not meant to be complete, therefore comments are helpful, if these comments have a solid justification (in short: no random noob calling). It’s intention is to help people remember what everyone solemny knows, since people tend to forget the basic rules of our existence in the midst of action and the fight with our (big) material. Therefore, it will improve the fun and joy we get from our gaming experience and our online togetherness.
Introduction
Before we start, we need to understand what is meant with the Bible (afterwards referred to as “it”). Therefore, I will briefly explain this.
The bible describes the laws and rules of our existence. But this particular bible explains the laws and rules of the existence of an online playing community. These laws make it possible that online players have fun and joy in playing their favourite online game. But it also makes it possible for people to grow as they discover their skills during gameplay.
The First Law
We will start of by describing the first law, followed by some situations wherein this law is applicable.
The first law describes that all human interaction shall be without intentional hurt. Since, hurt to one another, is hurt to oneself.
A situation in which this occurs can be described as follows:
Player X was enjoying a good game of “ownage”, his k/d (kill/death) ration exceeds 1.0 and he thrives in his fulfillment of his challenges, when suddenly one player (Player Y) starts shouting at this person. He defines Person X (our main character) as a “Noob” (something that is often used in online gaming interaction), because he is “camping” (a term especially used in FPS games, I will not go into detail what this is, because people are not agreed on a single definition) and using a gun called the “UMP” (which is apparently a noob gun, although people do not agree on these confinements).
Although these charges may have been acceptable (even though the definitions are confusing), Player X started raging on Player Y, he calls his (or hers – as sometimes occurs as well in the online world) mother a ♥♥♥♥♥, and Player Y appears to be a “♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥”, while she was already a ♥♥♥♥♥ (this is ofcourse strange, but I will not discuss this in detail).
What happens next, is ofcourse easy to figure out, Player Y feels hurtened, and in response threatens to “kill him” (this makes sense because it is an FPS online game) and he (or her) will ♥♥♥♥ his (or hers) sister (or brother).
This situation clearly shows that the basic first law of human interaction in the online MW2 world will damage both people, while losing the fun of playing (his brother or sister will be “♥♥♥♥♥♥”). Some (especially younger) people will not understand the hatred from players, and they will retaliate by calling names.
Instead, the first law indicates that people shall not intentionally hurt other people. This would mean, that when a player calls another player a “noob” or any non-hurting name, the player that is called this name (the noob in question), will not retaliate, but controls his angers, and keeps in mind the above stated law and situation and the forthcoming results. The result will be that no anger and hatred is surrounding this particular game. And everyone can enjoy a good gameplay!
The next Law is forthcoming.
The Second Law
As we have seen, the First Law is the law that is applicable to all kinds of situations, and is the most important law to guide the behavior of online players. If this law would be obtained, all others laws would have been unnecessary.
However, achieving this noble end is hard and determination is required. To help with this, several other laws have been instigated for the MW3 Community.
One of these laws is the second law. This law is described as follows: One shall not use any form of “hacks”, “cheats”, “glitches” or “bugs” for the neglect of other players joy.
What does this mean and how do we recognize a situation in which this law is applicable?
Well, let’s again try to imagine a situation in which Player X (a male in this situation) is joyfully playing his favorite map in MW3, he strives in killing his oppononents and whilst in the midst of action, notices he was killed from the other end of the map. This appears to be strange, but no harm done. Suddenly when he respawns, he is killed immediately.
Player X starts questioning the integrity of let’s say Player Y (also a male) and he is watchtng the Killcam of Player Y. He conveys that Player Y is using a form of hacks (also knows as cheats).
The behavior of Player Y is unacceptable as he is destroying the enjoyment Player X as he was thriving in the MW3 Gameplay and fairfuly was gaining his experience in the online world.
Player Y on the other hand, has no meaning for these kind of “thrivings” nor for “gaining experience”. He enjoys from the destruction of others “dreams” and “enjoyments”.
Although the online world does stipulate that the use of hacks (or cheats) are forbidden, Player Y was able to use them at the neglect of others. He destroys the enjoyment of others for his own enjoyment.
Therefore one shall not use hacks (nor cheats, bugs, or glitches) when this compromises the enjoyment of other players. This second law is therefore a fulfillment of the First Law, but this time more detailed.
The Third Law
The Third law, again, a follow up on the First law.
This law is described as follows: One shall not intentionally download movies (porn or any other related or unrelated explicit content) whilst playing Modern Warfare 3: Multiplayer, especially when the person in question appears to be the host of the game.
Next, I will explain a situation in which this appears to be applicable.
Player X (again a male) is enjoying a thriving game of Modern Warfare 3, with a k/d exceeding 1.0 and capturing many flags in the Domination gameplay mode. However, Player Y (a male, and the host of this thriving game), appears to be losing the match, and his k/d is below 1.0, and he is not enjoying the game and appears to be not taking the loss very well.
Player Y has therefore made several attempts to divert the attention of Player X and his fellow teammates by calling them “noob” or any other form of disrupting information (“♥♥♥♥” or “gaylord” are also brought up). However, Player X and his fellow teammates stay rather focused, and Player Y stops his attempts.
However, now things start to get interesting. Player Y’s anger is still unfulfilled, and he is determined to win the game and make a good scene. He turns to his “utorrent” software program (or Azureus) to download some good old explicit content in order to introduce some “lag” (described as the delay (or latency) between an action by a player and the reaction of the game (Wikipedia, 2012)).
This lag causes the other players to miss their targets and their reactions are altered to a non-acceptable level of skill. Player Y can therefore thrive while all other players (even his own teammates) and their “dreams” (of becoming the best mw3 player evar) are destroyed.
Even though the game ends as a disaster, and Player Y’s team still lost the game, Player Y was satisfied, and achieved a k/d exceeding 1.0.
This situation clearly displays what can happen when people intentionally introduce lag (or latency) to the game for the destruction of other people hopes and dreams.
This Third Law is therefore a follow up on the First Law, and clearly shows that these methods decrease the amount of fun and joy one has from a game of MW3.
The Fourth Law
This law is very important for the existence of the online MW3 Community. One that strongly relates to the First Law.
The Third Law states that: One shall respect the usage of the sort of weapon, map, or type of gameplay, in which a particular player is thriving (Including UMP, Tubes, Camping)
Why is this law important, and when are we presented in these kinds of situations. Well first, the situation
Player X (male) is enjoying his favourite map, thriving considerably with a k/d exceeding 1,2 (!). Although this k/d appears to be a very unique experience by Player X, his achievement is not recognized by his opponents.
Especially Player Y (male) makes the assumption that this achievement is attained by the use of the UMP (also known as: the Universal Machine Pistol). He is very eager to present evidence of this “Overpowered Weapon” by explaining that it’s range is to good and damage is still high after using silencer etc… blahblah.
All in all, the UMP is a “noob” (I thought noobs were persons?) weapon, which is the result of an unfairly distributed method that the makers of MW3 (Infinity Ward is not only blamed for trying to earn money) have failed to recognize when creating the algorithms that the game was designed upon.
This “unbalanced” gun is not “fair”. Therefore, you cannot use it, and you should use crappy weapons that are “pro” (oh, wow you earn money with gaming). Player Y keeps pushing Player X to stop using these “noob” weapons, and calls Player X a “noob” as well, and as we know from the First Law this results in a process which is often referred to as “noob calling”.
So, why is it important to have this law? The reason is simple, leave one another playing the game how they want to play it. If someone wants to camp, let him/her camp. If someone wants to use the Universal Machine Pistol, let them, and everyone can peacefully kill each other.
Therefore instead of raging, which will also damage your enjoyment of the game, try to respect to use of particular methods of playing.
