Intro

Subnautica is a first-person video game set in the future on an aquatic uncharted planet created and released by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, that blends the traits of the survival and the exploration genres. Subnautica hit Steam on December 16, 2014 as part of the Early Access program and was fully released on January 23, 2018. The game is available on PC (Steam & Humble Bundle), VR (Steam and Oculus Home) and Xbox One. A version for the PlayStation 4 was looked into for after V1.0 and was released December 6, 2018. Due to the developer-centric update policies on Steam, that version receives updates the earliest.

Story

Precursor Period Events
  • Around 1000 years prior to the events of the game, the Precursor Race discovers Kharaa on an unknown planet and some individuals are infected. Errors in quarantine procedures cause Kharaa to be spread to their core worlds.
  • The Precursors set up several research outposts to attempt to develop a vaccine, including one on Planet 4546B. The Quarantine Enforcement Platform, the Disease Research Facility, and the Alien Thermal Plant are constructed, as well as the Sanctuary Caches. It can be assumed that around this time period, the Gargantuan Fossil was found, and the Precursors began taking samples from its ribcage.
  • After many tests, the Sea Emperor Leviathan species is found to have an immunity to Kharaa, and the Primary Containment Facility is constructed, along with the Alien Arch Caches in various biomes. The Precursors capture a 1600-year-old Sea Emperor Leviathan, along with its seven eggs and contain them within the facility. It is likely that this is also when the Ancient Skeleton was discovered, and the Lost River Laboratory Cache was constructed as the focus of this laboratory’s study is Leviathans.
  • It is revealed to the Precursors that their captive is much too old. Due to this, the potency of its Enzyme 42 had declined, meaning it was not capable of killing the infection, only causing temporary remission. The Precursors then conclude to research its unborn eggs, as they deduced that a younger specimen would produce a stronger enzyme.
  • The Sea Emperor Leviathan telepathically telling the Precursors their methods of forcefully making the eggs hatch would not work though according to the Sea Emperor “they could not hear”. The Precursors dissect one of the eggs and lay its fetus on an operating table, however, the process kills the fetus. A second egg is stored within the Primary Containment Facility’s egg lab in order to research it. More eggs from the majority of the species on the planet are taken as well. The Precursors eventually place the remaining five eggs into the Incubator Device.
  • The Precursors take a Sea Dragon Leviathan egg for research on leviathan egg hatching conditions, due to the species’ possible relation to each other. However the parent tracks down its egg and rams into the Disease Research Facility, destroying it. Kharaa is released and the Precursors initiate the planetary quarantine. Construction for the Warpers cease, leaving only limited number on the planet.
  • The Precursors deem the planet a lost cause due to Kharaa’s severity, focusing on a vaccine rather than the spread of the bacterium. Kharaa kills a majority of species on the planet, rendering the ancestors of the creatures in the modern day to rapidly evolve due to the drastic changes in the ecosystem.
  • Remaining Precursors are evacuated to sanctuaries where their bodies are disposed of and their minds uploaded to data hubs.
  • The Sea Emperor Leviathan species is killed off due to their food source being wiped out by Kharaa, save for the one in containment.
  • The Sea Emperor Leviathan trains Peepers to use the Alien Vents, with each Peeper carrying small amounts of Enzyme 42 to distribute among the planet.
  • The Precursor species is presumably killed off by Kharaa sometime between 1200 AD and 2160 AD.
Degasi Period Events
  • About a decade before the Aurora the Degasi crashes on 4546B.
  • The Degasi survivors build their bases on the Floating Island, however, due to heavy rainfall and Marguerit’s persistence, they relocate to the Jellyshroom Cave, and Marguerit uncovers a tablet.
  • The Degasi survivors relocate again to the Deep Grand Reef, where Bart explains to his father and Marguerit that they are infected with something that is not recorded in the Databank. After Marguerit brings an injured Reaper Leviathan to the base, a second Reaper Leviathan, having followed Marguerit back, attacked and destroyed the base. Marguerit chased the creature, intent on killing it, whilst Paul followed a light he saw (possibly a Mesmer), Bart managed to elude the creature and fled to presumably the Safe Shallows or Crash Zone and possibly the Floating Island.
  • Bart manages to survive for an unspecified amount of time, able to build himself a Seabase and a Seamoth. Although he eventually went back to the Floating Island, where he wrote his final log, and most likely succumbs to Kharaa.

Story 2

Aurora Period Events
  • A decade later, the Aurora attempts to perform a slingshot maneuver in the atmosphere of Planet 4546B with 157 people aboard. To begin the construction of a new phase gate in the Adrienne Arm. However, while doing so, the Quarantine Enforcement Platform detects the ship and fires at it, resulting in it crashing on 4546B, and the crew is forced to evacuate.
  • 29 to 44 people manage to eject in Lifepods 1-25, but only ten manage to make it to the surface, with only one carrying a dead passenger. Each Lifepod landed in different Biomes. One, in particular, is Lifepod 5, housing the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief, Ryley Robinson. He is knocked unconscious for three hours by a loose panel during its descent. All the other surviving crew members perish during this period of unconsciousness.
  • The Aurora’s drive core explodes.
  • After (arguably) one week, the Sunbeam picks up a distress call and comes to rescue Ryley.
  • The Sunbeam sends the coordinates for the Mountain Island, where they will land.
  • The Sunbeam is destroyed by the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, which Ryley explores, discovering Alien Tablets, the Control Room, and the approximate location of the Disease Research Facility.
  • After exploring the Mountain Island, Ryley finds the Alien Arch within, and activates it, taking him to the Floating Island, where he also discovers the Degasi Seabases.
  • Ryley goes to the Disease Research Facility, and discovers the nature of Kharaa and realizes that he is infected.
  • After the incubation period for Kharaa is finished (two weeks, at this time), the coordinates for the Alien Thermal Plant are received.
  • Ryley reaches the Alien Thermal Plant and attains the Blue Tablet, along with the Ion Battery and Ion Power Cell blueprints.
  • Ryley reaches the Primary Containment Facility and encounters the now 2600-year-old Sea Emperor Leviathan.
  • The Sea Emperor Leviathan telepathically communicates with Ryley and explains that its eggs must be hatched in order to eradicate Kharaa.
  • Ryley hatches the eggs after gathering various flora from different biomes using the Arches, and the Sea Emperor Leviathan Babies release the stable form of Enzyme 42, otherwise known as Baby Leviathan Enzymes. Ryley interacts with the Enzymes and is thus cured. After playing with their parent, the Babies leave the aquarium through the Arch behind the Incubator. Their parent stays behind as it is far too large to travel through the Arch, eventually, it dies here, though Ryley never sees this.
  • Ryley goes through the Aquarium Arch which is connected to an Arch on a suspended platform close to the Quarantine Enforcement Platform, he enters, and, now cured, is able to disable the weapon, allowing him to escape.
  • Ryley returns to the now-destroyed Aurora and obtains the Neptune Escape Rocket blueprint, where he eventually constructs it.
after entering the rocket, and activating it, blasting off from Planet 4546B. While orbiting the planet, the Sea

Carnivorous Fauna

Ampeel
Ampeels are an aggressive fauna species found dwelling in the Bulb Zone and the Blood Kelp Zone, as individuals or in small groups of two, three, four, maybe even five if you are unlucky enough. Zapping noises can be heard when around the Ampeel, and when it uses its electrical attacks against other life forms or the player. Its shocking attack deals about 15 damage to the player’s health, and its bite will take away 45 health.

Biter
The Biter is an extremely fast and territorial fish. It occasionally emits quiet growls and clicks. It will attack without hesitation if the player gets too close. Each bite deals 7 damage to the player’s health. Biters will eat any corpses that they come across, making them disappear. Biters will usually form shoals or small groups of two to three individuals. The Biter, like other predators, will eat from the player’s hand if offered fish and will leave the player alone for a moment. This can be risky with a group of Biters as they individually eat around three samples each and some may still injure the player while swarming. Although one Biter can be easily dealt with, a large swarm of Biters can be dangerous to encounter, and can easily kill the player.

Blighter
The Blighter is a subspecies of the Biter that can be found around the Blood Kelp Caves and Blood Kelp Zone. Much like its relative, the Blighter is a very territorial creature and will attack the player when nearby.

Boneshark
The Boneshark is a large, highly aggressive fauna species. It is a fierce, active predator that primarily dwells in the Underwater Islands, Crag Field and Bulb Zone biomes.

Crabsnake
The Crabsnake is a large, aggressive fauna species found exclusively in the Jellyshroom Cave, where they reside in the Jellyshrooms. It will attack the player on approach, dealing 35 damage. The Crabsnake waits inside a Jellyshroom in an upright position until the player gets too close. At that point, it will spring out and grab them as a surprise attack. It is worth noting that the Stasis Rifle will not work while the Crabsnake is in the Jellyshroom. While being attacked by the Crabsnake, the player is trapped in the same way they would be while being attacked by the Reaper Leviathan.

Crabsquid
The Crabsquid is a large, aggressive fauna species. It can be found in the Northern Blood Kelp Zone, the Deep Grand Reef and the Lost River. The Crabsquid’s main body has two layers: a translucent, bulbous sac resembling a comb jellyfish’s body, and a hard brown green body within, similar to that of a real life squid’s mantle. The Crabsquid’s head consists of four, large blue eyes with black pupils and an oddly shaped mandible below them. The Crabsquid’s legs resemble those of a horseshoe crab, though tipped with small fins. Its ten limbs are brown-colored and smooth. The two shortest limbs near its mouth form a pair of comparably small pincers of which it uses to attack by raising its legs.

Crashfish
The Crashfish is a defensive fauna species found only in caves, usually in the Safe Shallows Caves, however, a group of 8 can also be found in the Kelp Forest Caves. The Crashfish lives in a symbiotic relationship with a flora species named the Sulfur Plant.

Lava Lizard
The Lava Lizard is a mid-sized, aggressive fauna species, dominating the areas of the Inactive Lava Zone and the Lava Lakes, as well as inhabiting the Lava Castle’s interior.

Mesmer
The Mesmer is an aggressive life form. It can be found in deep caves of certain biomes, such as the Kelp Forest and the Bulb Zone. The Mesmer is a small, colorful fish with three design patterns; its four large skin panels are bluish-white, and are capable of emitting a green bio luminescent glow at night, with dark violet stripes, and are surrounded by a thin translucent blue film. The patterns on these panels radiate and ripple when the creature is mesmerizing its prey.

River Prowler
The River Prowler is a large, aggressive fauna species which dwells exclusively in the Lost River. The River Prowler will lash out its tendrils when attacking, and then pull them back. It will use its tendrils to pull in its prey, and then proceed to mow it down using its large maw. This behaviour is similar to that of the Reaper Leviathan.

Sand Shark
The Sand Shark is a fauna species dwelling mostly in the Grassy Plateaus, Crash Zone, and the Dunes. They prefer to stay close to, or beneath the sea floor and never wander near the surface. The Sand Shark’s body is segmented and their dorsal surface is completely covered with a plated exoskeleton, having a grayish-violet upperside and a pinkish underbelly, with a brief gap where its muscle can be seen. Short, grey, leg-like appendages appear in two rows of six on its underside, used to disturb the surface of sand.

Stalker
The Stalker is an aggressive Fauna species mostly found populating the Kelp Forest, and occasionally the Crash Zone. Rarely, Stalkers can be found swimming into the Safe Shallows while chasing the player or other small fauna. Being predators, Stalkers will attempt to chase and eat nearby Peepers and other small prey. They will also attack the player upon close encounters with each bite dealing 30 damage. The player should be cautious while exploring Kelp Forests to avoid getting attacked by surprise, as Stalkers often form small groups that will lurk in the dense Creepvines.

Warper
The Warper, or the Self-Warping Quarantine Enforcer Unit as named by the Precursors, is a bio-mechanical life form created by the Precursor race. It can generate a teleportation gate, which it uses to warp itself and other life forms of its size or smaller at will. Warpers can be found in some of the deeper biomes (those that go lower than 300 meters), but are especially prevalent around Alien Bases. An inactive Warper, along with many separate Warper parts can be found within the Disease Research Facility in the Lost River, where they were being built, having been stopped mid-construction likely due to the attack on the facility by the Sea Dragon Leviathan. This inactive Warper can be scanned to obtain the Self-Warping Quarantine Enforcer Unit data.

Herbivorous Fauna

Bladderfish
The Bladderfish is a small, passive fauna species. It can be caught and is edible, mostly populating in the Safe Shallows and the Grand Reef. The Bladderfish stands out in comparison to other small fish, as it can be used to craft Filtered Water. As a result, Bladderfish are a good source of H2O, though not as good as Disinfected Water and Large Filtered Water.

Boomerang
The Boomerang is a small fish with a bright yellow-green center and dark green stripes along the sides and edges of its body. It is horizontally symmetrical, and, as its name suggests, similar in shape to a real life boomerang. From the Boomerang’s top and bottom protrude long, slim, pointed fins extending diagonally backwards from its main body. The tips of these fins give off a cyan bio-luminescent glow. It has four eyes, two on each side of its head, being respectively above and below of its mouth, which although it is a herbivore, is full of sharp teeth, according to the PDA for eating coral.

Crimson Ray
The Crimson Ray swims aimlessly around the Inactive Lava Zone and Lava Lakes in small or large groups. On occasion they can be seen swimming away from Lava Lizards. They will ignore the player as they glide gently through the lava zones.

Cuddlefish
The Cuddlefish uses its tentacles to propel itself and mostly swims around darting in circles and letting out various chirping noises, as well as occasionally swimming over to investigate objects that interest it such as small fauna or Fragments. The Cuddlefish will either follow the player around or stay in one area when told to. The player can tell it to stop/start following them using RMB. The player can play with it using LMB. It has various play actions, such as high fives, magic tricks, or cuddles, and will display various emotions depending on said action.

Eyeye
The Eyeye swims around slowly and aimlessly, and often pauses in place to scan the area using its huge eyeball. It will flee from the player upon noticing them. Oddly, other creatures can be seen ‘bullying’ Eyeyes by repeatedly swimming into them at high speeds, causing them to spin out of control. The reason for this is unknown.

Garryfish
The Garryfish has a long, slim, yellow body with brighter yellow vertical stripes. Its tail comprises most of its length. Its body mass is concentrated on the front. It has a small mouth and stalked eyes situated on top of its head. The caudal fins are much smaller in comparison with the pectoral fins, and all of the fins have a maroon hue with a dull red bioluminescent glow. The name Garryfish might be a reference to SpongeBob’s pet sea snail Gary.

Gasopod
The Gasopod is not hostile toward the player and will not attack the player directly. However, if the player or another creature perceived as threatening approaches the front end of the creature, the Gasopod will detach a few of its algae pods, which eventually explode into a cloud of poisonous fluid after a few seconds. The gas will harm the player as well as other life forms in its path. The relatively slow speed of the Gasopod, likely due to its massive size, allows the player to retreat easily if this happens.

Ghost Ray
The Ghostray is a docile creature, spending a majority of its time swimming aimlessly around the Giant Cove Tree in the Tree Cove, in the Bones Field, and in the Ghost Canyon.

Holefish
The Holefish is very agile and evasive, often seen darting around cave systems’ entrances alone or in shoals. It flees when approached by the player. Holefish can be found following Reefback Leviathans along with many other species of edible fauna.

Hoopfish
The Hoopfish is a rather slow swimmer, and is mostly seen forming shoals in various biomes. It would often try to flee if approached by the player. Hoopfish are commonly seen grouping up around Reefback Leviathans in groups of 3 to 4.

Hoverfish
As its name implies, the Hoverfish “hovers” in the water currents between the Creepvines, and “swims” rather slowly. When approached by the player, the creature will not flee. The Hoverfish will approach other fish and push them around. It will also do this to the bodies of deceased fish. The Hoverfish appears to show the most emotion compared to other edible fauna, as it will blink, wiggle and shake its head in fear when being held.

Jellyray
Jellyrays aimlessly glide around, dragging their tentacles behind them when doing so and emitting high pitched cries. They are curious about light, and can usually be seen investigating any nearby light sources, The curious behavior fades away after inspecting the light source.

Magmarang
Much like its relative, the Magmarang is an agile swimmer. It mostly darts around open space in the large chamber and corridors of the Inactive Lava Zone. Upon being approached by the player, the Magmarang will eventually flee.

Oculus
The Oculus is fairly agile and tends to form small shoals patrolling the Jelly Shroom Caves’ vicinity while constantly producing faint but audible clicking sounds. It seems to be afraid of light, as any light source directly pointed at it will make it flee. The Oculus will flee from the player much slower than its relative, therefore making it easier to catch.

Peeper
The Peeper is mostly active during the day, and can often be seen jumping out of the water. At night, it seems to rest more, though it is still somewhat active. When chased by the player, the Peeper may sometimes shut its eyes slowly (most likely to be subtle) making it harder to be seen. It often does so at night, making it near impossible to find and catch in the darkness. It can be heard making chirping-like noises when swimming.

Rabbit Ray
The Rabbit Ray will swim around gracefully but can be observed staying in one spot near their eggs. If the player gets close to a Rabbit Ray, it will emit different variations of a soft cry. Their cries can be heard even if the player is not around them. The cry can be notably heard in the Safe Shallows.

Red Eyeye
The Red Eyeye, much like its relative, is a slow swimmer. It gently glides aimlessly through the vast space of the Inactive Lava Zone. Upon noticing the player, the Red Eyeye will swim away slowly. Like its relative, the Red Eyeye will be ‘bullied’ by other creatures in the area.

Reginald
The Reginald is fast and is mostly seen darting around the open space in various biomes, often forming small shoals. It is also a shy creature and will eventually flee from the player upon being noticed.

Herbivorous Fauna 2

Skyray
Skyrays tend to congregate in small groups, often seen flying around Lifepod 5, the Aurora, and the Islands. Skyrays can be seen resting on the ground on the Mountain Island and the Floating Island, taking off upon being approached.

Spadefish
Spadefish swim at a moderate pace, occasionally fleeing from the player when approached. They are usually grouped together, making them very common in their respective biomes. Spadefish can occasionally be found following very closely behind Reefback Leviathans in groups of four to five. It should be noted that the Seamoth can be damaged by running into a Spadefish.

Spinefish
Similar to its relative, the Spinefish is slow-moving and tends to form shoals in the Blood Kelp Zones. Upon being noticed by the player, it will try to flee.

Scavenger & Parasitic Fauna

Amoeboid
Amoeboids have a blue interior body which is speckled with small, lighter cyan dots. Larger, irregularly shaped, semi-transparent cyan patches cover this body. From the inner body, tendrils protrude, connecting to the bright, transparent cyan outer body, which has a cracked texture.

Ancient Floater
Ancient Floaters are found underneath the Floating Island and Underwater Islands. They are huge relatives of the small, portable Floaters, and hold up the latter and the former. Ancient Floaters are non interactive and are flatter than their smaller kin. Floaters are usually found attached to rocks, rendering them buoyant.

Bleeder
Bleeders usually swarm and are hostile to any fauna, both dead and alive, as well as to the player. They tend to gather themselves into a swarm and swim after the player within a small radius, after sensing their presence. Bleeders are attracted to blood, including from other Bleeders. Be cautious when killing one, as many more may come.

Blood Crawler
The Blood Crawler moves in groups, typically patrolling the seabed, and will attack the player when approached. More notably, the Blood Crawler moves much faster than its relative. It is also capable of climbing onto the walls and ceilings of most surfaces, including Seabases, cave walls, the Seamoth, Cyclops, and Prawn Suit.

Cave Crawler
The Cave Crawler is semi-terrestrial, but it cannot swim, instead walking and jumping around underwater. It moves in groups. When being approached, it lunges towards the player to attack. It is also capable of climbing onto the walls and ceilings of caves. It appears to be used to slow prey, as it rarely can hit a moving target. When it attacks the player, it hits for 5 HP, with severe knockback (if on dry land). The easiest way to avoid this is to keep moving when they are nearby, as their jumping attack does not lead a target. It would be advisable to carry a Stasis Rifle, Propulsion Cannon or Repulsion Cannon to deal with these creatures.

Floater
Floaters are a passive, interactive fauna species found in Safe Shallows and Grassy Plateaus. They can be caught and can be attached to items and props, but not all of them will provide buoyancy after attachment.

Lava Larva
The Lava Larva will swim around aimlessly, producing high-pitched chirping sounds. It will attach itself to the Seamoth, Prawn Suit and Cyclops, draining Energy and slowing the vehicle down. The more Lava Larvae there are attached, the more quickly the energy will drain. In order to get the Lava Larva off, the player must hit it with the Knife, they will not approach and attach to a Cyclops with an active Cyclops Shield Generator, and can also be scared off with the Seamoth Perimeter Defense System.

Rockgrub
The Rockgrub is a very small, passive fauna species that mostly dwells in cavernous areas. Despite superficially resembling an invertebrate the PDA states that it is a possible relative of the Sand Shark, meaning it must be a small vertebrate. The Rockgrub is the smallest living fauna in Subnautica.

Shuttlebug
Shuttlebugs seem to have two states of behavior. Shuttlebugs found on the surface will swim around much like other small life forms, but Shuttlebugs found in caves appear to only swim in place. Occasionally, Shuttlebugs will accidentally leave the caves they are in.
